Hebrews 7:1–3
1 "For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham as he was returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 2 to whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth part of all the spoils, was first of all, by the translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace. 3 Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, he remains a priest perpetually."

Examining this Old Testament picture of Jesus we also see that Melchizedek was "without father, without mother, without genealogy".  No, this does not mean that he had no mom or dad.  What the writer means is that he had no pedigree that qualified him for service.  He wasn't from a kingly line or a priestly line.  He was a king and a priest based on merit, not genealogy.  While Jesus does descend from David's kingly line, He is also a king and priest based on merit.  It is because of His obedience that God declared Him both Lord and Christ and seated Him at His right hand.  Praise Jesus for being worthy of His office!
