1 John 4:7–8
7 "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love."
John says that the person without love cannot make a claim on loving God, for love is God's most basic and descriptive attribute. God is love personified. Ask Him to help you love like He loves and thus show yourself to be His child.
