Our Story

How it all started...

On November 27, 1909, a group of people, with little else but a strong faith in God, met together to organize the First Baptist Church of Spur, TX with Bro. J.C. Robison as pastor.  He served five months.  At the close of the first year the church had a membership of 76.  A tabernacle was built in which to worship and a Sunday School was organized the first year.  Another outstanding feature of that first year was the organization of the Ladies Aid, with Mrs. P.H. Miller as president.  The Ladies Aid later developed into our well-organized Women's Missionary Union.  The B.Y.P.U. (Baptist Young People's Union) was also organized during the first year, which later became the Training Union Program for every member of the family.

During the next 16 years the church had as pastors:  The Reverends G. Carroll Berryman, J.M. McMahen, A.T. Douglas, A.B. Miller, G.W. Thomas, and L.L.F. Parker.  The first Y.W.A. was organized in 1917.  While Bro. Parker was pastor, plans were made for the red brick building which was used until October, 1967, when our present auditorium was built to join the Educational Building that had been built in 1945.  The succeeding pastors were: The Reverends F.G. Rogers, M.F. Ewton, C.R. Joiner, Aubry Short, Herman Coe, C.N. Gilbert, C. Melvin Ratheal, Tommie Allen, L.F. Pendley, Riley Fugitt, Laverl Kite, and John Jenkens.

The first Vacation Bible School was held during Bro. Joiner's ministry.  During Bro. Herman Coe's ministry the nursery was equipped, tables were made for serving meals, pulpit furniture was ordered, the church library was established, and the Baptist Standard was sent into every church home for the first time. During Bro. Gilbert's pastorate, the Mexican Mission was established and the Educational Building was erected.  An organ was purchased during Bro. Ratheals time as pastor and we had our first full time music and youth director, Malcom Edwards.  After Bro. Riley Fugitt became pastor in 1956 our new parsonage was built at 612 N. Willard.  The succeeding pastors were: Norris Taylor, Sam Simmons, Darwin Cox, Genoa Goad, and Richard Harbison.

Our church moved into our new building in October, 1967, under the leadership of pastor Norris Taylor.  In September 1972 Clifford Trull became part-time Music and Youth Director.  The church paid the note on the new building May 18, 1974, seven years prior to the due date.  Leo Day Jr. was hired as part time music director in February of 1993 and continues to serve in that capacity today.  A storm took out the original church sign in August of 2003 and the new rock sign was installed by Glen Martin.

Our current pastor, Rory Mosley, was called to serve in September of 2003.  Since that time the aging kitchen, bathrooms, and sanctuary have been remodeled.  The giant cross was installed in July of 2025 after the steeple was forced to be removed due to a faulty ground and lightning threat.  The church has been fortunate to serve on mission trips in El Paso,  Zimbabwe, China, Lebanon, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Malawi, and Kenya.  The
