WHAT OUR FAITH IN CHRIST REVEALS

How We Know We Belong to God: Part 4

1 John 5:1-5 (ESV)

What is wrong?—We’re in a war with deception by the devil,

with indifference due to the flesh, and with

distraction because of the world.

What is true?—Jesus Christ has already

won for us the victory in this war.

What to do—We must put our faith in Christ.

Why?—Because our faith in Him

reveals three realities:

  I.   Our Faith in Christ Reveals a New Nature (1 John 5:1a)

1a ‘Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God…’ (v. 1a, emphasis added).

 II.   Our Faith in Christ Reveals New Affections (1 John 5:1b)

1b ‘and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him’ (v. 1b, emphasis added).

III.   Our Faith in Christ Reveals a New Purpose (1 John 5:2-5)

2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4 ‘For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God’ (vv. 4-5, emphasis added).
