October 31, 2017 marked the 500th anniversary of the day Martin Luther nailed the 95 Thesis on the Castle Church door in Wittenberg. There is little doubt that God used that monk with a mallet to usher in the great reformation. More than just heroic stories of sacrifice and faithfulness and martyrdom, the story of the Reformation is the story of the rescuing of the gospel. This men did us a tremendous favor in helping us discover the absolute essentials of the gospel and the ultimate standard of Christian unity. While we certainly wish to unify with all those who claim Christianity, we (as they) must say that we stand for Sola Scriptura, Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, Solus Christus, and Soli Deo Gloria. In fact we protest anything that adds to the sufficiency of Scripture. We protest anything that adds to the work of grace. We protest anything that adds to the requirement of faith. We protest anything that adds to the exclusivity of Christ. We protest anything that would detract from the glory of God. We are protestant!
