Introducing The Oracles
Isaiah 13:1
June 18, 2023

Tonight we begin a new and lengthy segment in Isaiah’s book.
It is the section which gives the most difficulty to the reader both in understanding it and in accepting it.

It is the segment which we might call “The Oracles”

You see it in verse 1, “The oracle concerning Babylon…”
(You’ll see it 10 times)

You are familiar with the word “oracle”.
It is a word that means “burden”

And we most recently looked at it in our study of the book of Malachi.

Malachi 1:1 “The oracle of the word of the LORD to Israel through Malachi.”

Hopefully you remember that when we studied Malachi we talked about how “burdened” God was over the sin of the people.

They had sin that He was tired of carrying.
The people were burdensome to Him.
We read about how they had “wearied” God.

That is the word Isaiah uses here over and over as he addresses the nations surrounding Israel.

Only here the burden is not on God, it is on the backs of sinners.

These oracles are sermons in which Isaiah outlines the coming judgments which God will lay on the world.

All in all, he will refer to somewhere between 11 & 13 different nations depending on how you count them.

Some are current enemies of Israel.
Some are nagging enemies of Israel.
Some are future enemies of Israel.
Some are potential allies whom Israel was prone to trust in for salvation.

And God is pronouncing judgment on them all.

Namely so that we will see that the enemies of God’s people will perish, and no other nation should be considered a hope of salvation.

If we might try to understand Isaiah’s method here in modern terms.

Consider another world war.
What nations might you consider as the enemy who would afflict you?
What nations might you consider as the ally who would save you?

And then you learn that God will judge all of them, including your own nation for all have sinned and salvation is found in Him alone.

That is what you see coming here from Isaiah.

The entire segment runs from chapter 13 through 23 where God deals with surrounding nations like Babylon, Assyria, Philistia, Moab, Damascus, Ethiopia, Egypt, Edom, Arabia, and Tyre.

And all of them have judgment pronounced upon them.
All of them are handed a burden from the LORD.

SOME OF THESE JUDGMENTS ARE CURRENT AND IMMEDIATE.

Some of what you read are judgments that were fulfilled in Isaiah’s day or shortly there after.

SOME OF THESE JUDGMENTS ARE PROPHETIC.

Some of the judgments which Isaiah describes have still not yet occurred on the earth and await the time of the great tribulation to find their fulfillment.

But what is unmistakable in every single oracle that Isaiah presents is that every time we are reading of God’s wrath poured out on sinners.

And that is a popular subject in Scripture.
One would even wonder how it has become so overlooked in the world today.

If you are confused as to whether or not God really is angry at sinners and whether or not He will actually judge them, then read this segment in Isaiah.

God will judge sin.
God will judge sinners.
And it will be terrible.

And while the world certainly needs to be informed of such a reality, the message of Isaiah is for the church.

Isaiah mentions all these foreign nations in his oracles, but you should know that those foreign nations never heard them.

These were not messages of warning preached to Babylon and Assyria and Edom so that they might repent and be saved.

These were messages of judgment preached to Israel regarding what God will do to a sinful world.

And look, some of it is hard to read.
(6-8) “Wail, for the day of the LORD is near! It will come as destruction from the Almighty. Therefore all hands will fall limp, And every man’s heart will melt. They will be terrified, Pains and anguish will take hold of them; They will writhe like a woman in labor, They will look at one another in astonishment, Their faces aflame.”

That’s a terrifying day.
(14-16) “And it will be that like a hunted gazelle, Or like sheep with none to gather them, They will each turn to his own people, And each one flee to his own land. Anyone who is found will be thrust through, And anyone who is captured will fall by the sword. Their little ones also will be dashed to pieces Before their eyes; Their houses will be plundered And their wives ravished.”

That is a terrifying and awful picture.
And Isaiah is going to talk about this stuff for 11 chapters!

WHY?
What is our benefit to studying 11 chapters of God’s judgment of the world?

Wouldn’t we be better served to study God’s grace?
Wouldn’t we be better served to study God’s love?
Wouldn’t we be better served to study God’s mercy?

What possible benefit is the church supposed to find in spending a couple of months pondering God’s judgment of sinners?

Well for one: HOPE

If you don’t know it now, hopefully you will learn it soon, that God is for His church.
God is on the side of His people, whom He has redeemed.

Yes, we are in a sinful world.
Yes, we suffer persecution at the hands of sinful man.

Paul said it (quoting Psalms 44)
Romans 8:36 “Just as it is written, “FOR YOUR SAKE WE ARE BEING PUT TO DEATH ALL DAY LONG; WE WERE CONSIDERED AS SHEEP TO BE SLAUGHTERED.”

The world hates believers.
The world persecutes believers.
And the Bible promises that this will only continue to get worse.

But one of the things that we learn from a segment of Scripture like this is that those who afflict God’s church will not win.

Even in the middle of this oracle concerning Babylon
Isaiah 14:1-4 “When the LORD will have compassion on Jacob and again choose Israel, and settle them in their own land, then strangers will join them and attach themselves to the house of Jacob. The peoples will take them along and bring them to their place, and the house of Israel will possess them as an inheritance in the land of the LORD as male servants and female servants; and they will take their captors captive and will rule over their oppressors. And it will be in the day when the LORD gives you rest from your pain and turmoil and harsh service in which you have been enslaved, that you will take up this taunt against the king of Babylon, and say, “How the oppressor has ceased, And how fury has ceased!”

One of the realities of studying this section of judgment is to remember that God will not allow sinners to run free forever.

He will stop them and punish them for your sake.

Jesus said it:
John 16:33 “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”

Paul promised:
Romans 16:20 “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.”

He told the Thessalonians who were heavily persecuted:
2 Thessalonians 1:6-8 “For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.”

Peter reminded us:
1 Peter 4:1-5 “Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. For the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and abominable idolatries. In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of dissipation, and they malign you; but they will give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.”

You see the promises repeatedly in the Bible.

Even though God’s people currently suffer under the hands of evil men, they will not always.

God will one day pour out His wrath upon those who persecuted and afflicted His people.

In justice He will return punish those who persecuted you.
He will crush Satan under your feet.
He will repay with affliction those who afflict you.
He will cause those who malign you to give an account of their wickedness.

That is a message of hope to God’s people.

Isaiah is delivering that message.

As the children of Israel witness God pouring out His wrath on nations like Babylon or Assyria or Philistia; nations which did unspeakable evil to Israel.

God will deal with them and they will not afflict you forever.
That’s one reason the church should study such a segment.

In addition, we also learn that we don’t have to deal with them ourselves because God will.

Romans 12:19-21 “Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY,” says the Lord. “BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM, AND IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS ON HIS HEAD.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

That is a great message to us as well.
Vengeance belongs to the Lord and we have hope because we know He is capable of carrying it out.

One of the benefits of the church studying such a section is that she can have hope as she sees God dealing justly with sinners.

Another reason is: FAITH

That studying God’s power to overthrow the enemy should inspire faith in you.

There is no need to turn to a worldly savior, God is your salvation.

As we study these oracles you will see Isaiah deal with the nations of Ethiopia and Egypt.

Isaiah brings these nations up because they were nations that Israel was prone to look to for salvation.

But they were false saviors and should not be trusted.
God reveals His judgment on them to show you that you should not trust them either.

And we learn that.
It would not be wise to trust in the US government or in another foreign nation for deliverance if they also abide under the wrath of God.

Instead God’s people should learn to trust God.
This segment will help you learn that.

Psalms 1 “How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, But they are like chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the wicked will perish.”

We learn here to put faith in the salvation of God.

We also learn to put faith in the justice of God.

I know that you, like me, are grieved at the rapid spread of sin even in our pocket of the world.

Here we are in the month of June, which someone in our world has arrogantly labeled “Pride Month”

Look, even if we didn’t know what specific sin they were promoting, just having a month where pride is exalted would be bad enough.

For God is opposed to the proud.

But it gets even worse when we find out the focus of that pride.
That men are boasting and proudly displaying a sin which God has specifically called evil.

A sin which God has actually rained fire and judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah for.

As I contemplated pride month, I couldn’t help but think of the verse we already studied in Isaiah.

Isaiah 3:9-11 “The expression of their faces bears witness against them, And they display their sin like Sodom; They do not even conceal it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves. Say to the righteous that it will go well with them, For they will eat the fruit of their actions. Woe to the wicked! It will go badly with him, For what he deserves will be done to him.”

Well this segment of oracles helps us see that God is not speaking idle threats when He says that.

He is not a God who threatens to “count to 3” and then get so 3 and does nothing.

When God promised to judge sin and to rescue us from this evil world He meant it.

This segment will increase your faith in the justice of God.
He will judge sinners.
He will redeem this world from the curse.
He will establish a kingdom where righteousness dwells.

Just read the segment.

But there’s still another benefit for the church to study this segment and that: WARNING

As you read these judgments which God will pour out upon sinners let Peter’s statement ring loudly in your ears.

1 Peter 4:17 “For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?”

When God begins to pour out His wrath and to bring justice on the head of sinners make sure you understand that He doesn’t start in the pub, He starts in the pew. He starts in the pulpit.

We have been clearly told by Jesus that “from whom much is given, much is required.”

We have been warned by Him:
Luke 12:47-48 “And that slave who knew his master’s will and did not get ready or act in accord with his will, will receive many lashes, but the one who did not know it, and committed deeds worthy of a flogging, will receive but few. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more.”

When God begins to pour out His judgment on the earth He starts with those who know better.

Furthermore when God judges sinners, that includes hypocrites who are sinners in hiding.

The stained glass of the church won’t hide the sin of your heart.

When Jesus came the first time, it was the religious elite who bore the greatest expression of His wrath.

When Jesus came the first time, though His disciples expected Him to declare war and deliver Israel, He only declared war on one place and that was the temple.

Do we remember the parable of the wedding banquet?
Matthew 22:11-14 “But when the king came in to look over the dinner guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed in wedding clothes, and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without wedding clothes?’ And the man was speechless. “Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ “For many are called, but few are chosen.”

When God comes to judge sinners He will judge all sinners.

If we’ve learned anything from Isaiah it should be that you don’t want to stand in the presence of the Holy One if you are a man of unclean lips.

God knows the difference and when He pours out judgment He will start with the house that is called by His name.

The warning is clear: BE REAL
As you study this segment in Isaiah and learn of God’s wrath poured out you should also know that He already knows the condition of your heart.

You aren’t fooling Him in the least.
Don’t roll the dice on your soul.

As Peter said:
2 Peter 1:10 “Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble;”

Paul said:
2 Corinthians 13:5 “Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test?”

That is good advice to the church.
And this segment in Isaiah should motivate every one of us to do just that.

But even then it’s not just a “saved” or “not saved” situation.
Even those here who are truly redeemed and know that they have been saved should be inspired by what we read in this segment.

We should be inspired to avoid the things that bring God’s judgment.

Colossians 3:5-10 “Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience, and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them. But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him”

Paul clearly promotes righteous living among the body of Christ.
But pay special attention to how he calls for it.

He tells us to kill of any “immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed”

WHY?
“For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience.”

Well here in Isaiah you’re going to see what the wrath of God falling on sinners looks like.

And when you see it, let Paul’s warning ring in your ear and determine to put away the things that have made God so angry.

It would be a foolish thing to witness God judging the world for their immorality and then to boldly go and participate in it as though He doesn’t care if you do it.

Listen to Paul again when he writes to the Ephesians.

Ephesians 4:17-19 “So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.”

Paul clearly says that you and I should not walk like the world.
Don’t act like them.

If you keep reading chapter 4 he’ll talk about lying and stealing and gossip and slander.

And Paul says they only reason the world does those things is because they are ignorant of God and hard hearted.

You don’t want to be in their camp.

Instead, Paul encourages:
Ephesians 5:1-7 “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma. But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them;”

Paul says you should imitate God and stay away from immorality or impurity or greed or coarse jesting because those people don’t go to heaven.

In fact he says again, “for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience”

There it is again.
Those behaviors invite God’s wrath.

Well is it such a bad thing to invite God’s wrath?
Well, study Isaiah 13-23 and you tell me.

I think you’ll find that you don’t want to do anything that invites the wrath of God into your life.

That is why Paul will go on to say:
Ephesians 5:11 “Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them;”

Ephesians 5:15-16 “Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil.”

Learn from the revealed judgment of God.
Take this segment as a warning.

Peter taught:
2 Peter 3:10-13 “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.”

There it is again.
“the day of the Lord” – and incidentally that is what we’ll be talking about. The day of God’s judgment on the earth.

Peter says that day is coming and it will be bad.
You’ll see that in Isaiah 13-23.

And since it will be bad, Peter asks you a question:
“what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct in godliness..?”

It’s a good question.

The point is that this segment, though difficult to deal with is extremely beneficial to the church.

It gives us hope that God will one day crush our enemies.
It strengthens our faith that God alone is our savior.
And it rightly warns us to put away sin and things which offend God.

And that means that this segment should also produce in the church repentance and a desire for atonement.

If you can study 11 chapters of God’s judgment of sinners and not be motivated to repent of your sin, the wrath of God will rightly fall upon you.

If you can study 11 chapter of God’s judgment of sinners and not be motivated to run to Christ for forgiveness and atonement, the wrath of God will rightly fall upon you.

That’s just the fact.

So this segment is extremely beneficial to the church even so far as the gospel is concerned for it drives men to Jesus that we might escape the wrath of God.

Romans 5:9 “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.”

That’s another verse I’ll gladly cling to as I study God’s judgment poured out upon the earth.

That Jesus saves us from such wrath.

Romans 8:1 “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

That’s wonderful news that I’ll hold to while studying God’s just judgment of sinners.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 “Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. While they are saying, “Peace and safety!” then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober. For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.”

As we study God’s revealed wrath on sinners could there be any more encouraging words that, “For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ”?

That is certainly an encouragement.

So you see how this segment not only warns us to put away sin, but it also drives us to Jesus.

I’m not saying it won’t be a difficult study, but if we approach it the right way it can be so beneficial to the church.

So we can eagerly study it.

Now I know that’s been a really lengthy introduction, but let’s sort of dip our toes in the water here on this first oracle tonight.

And we’ll do so because this one seems to come with much confusion among commentators.

We start here in verse 1 with:
“The oracle concerning Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw.”

Now let me tell you why this one causes trouble.

Namely because depending on the exact time when Isaiah wrote this oracle Babylon is still at least 50 years away from their rise to power and at least 75 years away from their siege of Jerusalem.

During Isaiah’s life, they aren’t really the problem.

They do get introduced.
We’ll get there later but you may remember how Hezekiah developed a sickness and God told him he was going to die.
But Hezekiah prayed to God and God extended his life by 15 years.
And after his recovery men from Chaldea (Babylon) came to congratulate him.
Hezekiah took them in and showed them all his storeroom.

Isaiah responded to this decision by saying:
Isaiah 39:5-8 “Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the LORD of hosts, ‘Behold, the days are coming when all that is in your house and all that your fathers have laid up in store to this day will be carried to Babylon; nothing will be left,’ says the LORD. ‘And some of your sons who will issue from you, whom you will beget, will be taken away, and they will become officials in the palace of the king of Babylon.’” Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the LORD which you have spoken is good.” For he thought, “For there will be peace and truth in my days.”

And the point is that Babylon will certainly be a threat, but they aren’t today.

If you want to start a segment out revealing the day God judges your enemies, you probably (in Isaiah’s day) don’t start with Babylon.

Who do you start with?
Who is the bully of the day?
Assyria

Now, this has led some to believe that what you are reading in chapters 13 and 14 is actually about Assyria and not Babylon.

They will tell you that the reference to Babylon here is not a reference to Babylon the future world power, but rather a reference to Babylon the present day city.

They will tell you how the city of Babylon was under Assyrian control.
They will also tell you how the city of Babylon, with the help of the Medes, would rebel against Assyria and in 689BC Assyria would crush them.

And so the desire is to see this oracle as really an oracle against Assyria.
They will even tell you that the “king of Babylon” mentioned in chapter 14 is actually Sennacharib because the Assyrian kings referred to themselves by this title.

And, I’ll be honest, they might be right.
I studied for several days this week to try and come to a definitive understanding, and couldn’t.

I don’t think they are right, but they might be and I’m giving you that option.

The problem with that view in my simple mind is obvious. If Isaiah is talking about Assyria why doesn’t he say “Assyria”. And if he is talking about the king of Assyria why doesn’t he call him “the king of Assyria”.

Certainly Isaiah knows who they are.
It just seems to me that you have to do a lot of dancing to shift these 2 chapters from Babylon to Assyria.

Another view is that Isaiah is talking about the nation of Babylon who would in about 100 years come and destroy Jerusalem and lead God’s people into captivity.

Certainly God will judge that nation and He will use the Medes to do it as verse 17 seems to indicate.

But as I said, the problem here is that Isaiah would start with them since they aren’t really even a threat yet.

If you were trying to preach a sermon about God’s judgment on your enemies you would certainly have started with Assyria or at least Aram or Israel, but not Babylon.

It just feels out of place.

So I’m going to give you my take on why Babylon and why Isaiah starts here.

First, of all the nations Isaiah will mention in his oracles, he will mention Babylon twice. He comes back to them in chapter 21.

And that, incidentally, is a much more logical position to deal with them since their affliction is further down the road.

The reason, I think, you see Babylon twice is because this first time Isaiah speaks of Babylon in the symbolic sense.

Babylon is often used in Scripture as symbolic for the world in general.

Before Isaiah gets specific to talk about God’s judgments on specific nations, first we talk about God’s judgment on the world universally.

In fact, only this oracle references the popular phrase, “the day of the LORD”, and Isaiah references it twice (13:6, 13:9).

We’re talking in chapters 13 and 14 about when God judges the evil world system, the global Babylon.

Certainly the nation is seen as a reference point, and yes some historical accuracy is found here too, but the point is to God’s judgment of the sinful world.

I know we are out of time here, but let me just give you some points to chew on and we’ll come back to them next Sunday morning when we’ve got more time to deal with them.

False religion actually began in Babylon.
It was the tower of Babel where false religion began. (Genesis 11)

Babylon is figuratively seen in Scripture as the protector of worldly deception.
We’ve studied Zechariah 5 about how wickedness was preserved and carried to Shinar to be put on a pedestal. Shinar is Babylon.

What is more, Babylon is where false religion ultimately culminates.
If you read Revelation 17 you see the great harlot who called, “BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.”

Even in Revelation 18 you see that Babylon is the center for all worldly greed and fleshly lusts.

The point is that when you see “The oracle concerning Babylon” here in verse 1 understand that this is a judgment poured out on the world.

This is not just some historical event that took place at the hands of the Medes and the Persians.

What we’re going to read in Isaiah 13-14 is a promise of God of what is coming some day on the whole earth.

And let me close tonight with just a preview.

Isaiah 13:9-11 “Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, Cruel, with fury and burning anger, To make the land a desolation; And He will exterminate its sinners from it. For the stars of heaven and their constellations Will not flash forth their light; The sun will be dark when it rises And the moon will not shed its light. Thus I will punish the world for its evil And the wicked for their iniquity; I will also put an end to the arrogance of the proud And abase the haughtiness of the ruthless.”

There is coming a day when God will wipe sinners off the planet.
“He will exterminate its sinners from it”

God will “punish the world for its evil”

This is not just some historical regional judgment.
This day is coming.

God will put His foot down once and for all.
The patience of God will be finished.
God’s wrath will break forth and sinners will be exterminated.

And to further reinforce my point:
Isaiah 14:26-27 “This is the plan devised against the whole earth; and this is the hand that is stretched out against all the nations. “For the LORD of hosts has planned, and who can frustrate it? And as for His stretched-out hand, who can turn it back?”

So there’s our introduction, we’ll get more into it next Sunday.

The Remnant Song – part 2
Isaiah 12:1-6 (4-6)
June 18, 2023

This morning we conclude the first major segment of the book of Isaiah.

And we can conclude it with this summation statement:
“The enemies of God have now become His children and His witnesses.”

That is really what we have seen,
And not only is that the message of the first 12 chapters of Isaiah,
But it is the message of the gospel.

It is the message of the whole of Scripture.

Think back for a moment to the mysterious life of Paul.
Do you remember the day God told Ananias He wanted him to go talk to Saul?

Acts 9:10-14 “Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and the Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” And the Lord said to him, “Get up and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him, so that he might regain his sight.” But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he did to Your saints at Jerusalem; and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name.”

• Ananias was not overly excited about his new directive from the Lord.
• This Saul was a bad man.
• He was an enemy of God.
• He arrested and incarcerated and killed Christians.

But God had a plan for this rebel enemy.
Acts 9:15-19a “But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of Mine, to bear My name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel; for I will show him how much he must suffer for My name’s sake.” So Ananias departed and entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” And immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he regained his sight, and he got up and was baptized; and he took food and was strengthened.”

God had determined to make a missionary out of His enemy.

And it happened.
Acts 9:19b-22 “Now for several days he was with the disciples who were at Damascus, and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, “He is the Son of God.” All those hearing him continued to be amazed, and were saying, “Is this not he who in Jerusalem destroyed those who called on this name, and who had come here for the purpose of bringing them bound before the chief priests?” But Saul kept increasing in strength and confounding the Jews who lived at Damascus by proving that this Jesus is the Christ.”

God took an enemy and made him a missionary.

But then again that story is NOT unique.
Isn’t that what God did for Isaiah?
• Didn’t we read in Isaiah 6 how Isaiah was a self-professed hypocrite?
• Didn’t we hear Isaiah confess that he was a man of unclean lips?

But after God forgave him we remember his inspiring response to God.
Isaiah 6:8 “Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

Isaiah also went from enemy to missionary.

But isn’t that also what God is doing in your life and my life?

Paul wrote:
Romans 5:6-11 “For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.”

• We were all enemies of God.
• We were all evil men and women.
• We all had unclean lips.
• But God sent His son to justify the ungodly and to save us and to reconcile us to Himself.
• And then He also commissioned us to take His gospel to the world.

This is not a unique story, it is the very story of the gospel.
It is the change that God works in the hearts of those He redeems.

And surely you also realize now that
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT GOD HAS BEEN DOING IN ISRAEL
Here in the first 12 chapters of Isaiah’s book.

DO WE REMEMBER that Israel was categorized as ENEMIES OF GOD?

Isaiah 1:4 “Alas, sinful nation, People weighed down with iniquity, Offspring of evildoers, Sons who act corruptly! They have abandoned the LORD, They have despised the Holy One of Israel, They have turned away from Him.”

Isaiah 1:14-15 “I hate your new moon festivals and your appointed feasts, They have become a burden to Me; I am weary of bearing them. “So when you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide My eyes from you; Yes, even though you multiply prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are covered with blood.”

Isaiah 1:21 “How the faithful city has become a harlot, She who was full of justice! Righteousness once lodged in her, But now murderers.”

Isaiah 3:8-9 “For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen, Because their speech and their actions are against the LORD, To rebel against His glorious presence. The expression of their faces bears witness against them, And they display their sin like Sodom; They do not even conceal it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves.”

And that’s just to name a few.
• They weren’t friends of God, they were enemies of God.
• They lived in sin and loved it.

In chapter 5 God actually compared them to a fruitless vineyard that needed to be destroyed.
Isaiah 5:5-6 “So now let Me tell you what I am going to do to My vineyard: I will remove its hedge and it will be consumed; I will break down its wall and it will become trampled ground. “I will lay it waste; It will not be pruned or hoed, But briars and thorns will come up. I will also charge the clouds to rain no rain on it.”

• They were a fruitless vineyard.
• They had unclean lips.
• They were enemies of God.

And we saw that GOD’S WRATH rightly abided on them.
Isaiah 5:24-25 “Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes stubble And dry grass collapses into the flame, So their root will become like rot and their blossom blow away as dust; For they have rejected the law of the LORD of hosts And despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. On this account the anger of the LORD has burned against His people, And He has stretched out His hand against them and struck them down. And the mountains quaked, and their corpses lay like refuse in the middle of the streets. For all this His anger is not spent, But His hand is still stretched out.”

They deserved judgment and it seemed that judgment
Would be all that they would get from the hand of God.

BUT…
• Instead of wiping them out by flood…
• Instead of raining fire and brimstone on them…

God raised up a prophet
And commissioned him to go to these sinful enemies.

Certainly most of the people would not listen to Isaiah and for most of them his ministry would only expose them and harden their hearts for judgment.

But God would use Isaiah to save a few of them; 10% God said.
WE CALL THEM THE REMNANT.

And we saw how God used “The Assyrian Rod” to accomplish His purposes of saving that remnant.

• He brought in Assyria who rained judgment on the stagnant hearts of God’s enemies.
• But there were a few who learned their lesson and repented of their sin and returned to God for salvation.

Isaiah 10:20-25 “Now in that day the remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob who have escaped, will never again rely on the one who struck them, but will truly rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel. A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. For though your people, O Israel, may be like the sand of the sea, Only a remnant within them will return; A destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness. For a complete destruction, one that is decreed, the Lord GOD of hosts will execute in the midst of the whole land. Therefore thus says the Lord GOD of hosts, “O My people who dwell in Zion, do not fear the Assyrian who strikes you with the rod and lifts up his staff against you, the way Egypt did. “For in a very little while My indignation against you will be spent and My anger will be directed to their destruction.”

They all had been God’s enemies, but through God’s discipline,
The remnant had their eyes opened.
They returned to God in repentance and God saved them.

It’s like the song we sometimes sing.
“Once Your enemy, now seated at Your table, Jesus thank You!”

THAT WAS THEM.
• God saved them.
• God redeemed them.
• God moved them from being and enemy to being a son.

That is what this entire segment has been about.

And now Isaiah brings this SEGMENT TO A CLOSE
With chapter 12 and the SONG OF THAT REMNANT.

This is the remnant’s response
To such an unlikely and undeserved salvation.

We started looking at this last Sunday night
And we noted that we see 2 major changes in this remnant.

2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”

• We know that Christ changes those He saves.
• We know that once a man is redeemed his life will be different.

Isaiah 12 shows us the two major changes that occurred in this remnant.

#1 THEIR WORSHIP
Isaiah 12:1-3

As I said, we studied this last Sunday night
So we won’t dwell long here, but it is worth seeing again.

We noted that their new worship was seen in 3 ways.

1) THEIR GRATITUDE: They went from condemnation to comfort

(1) “Then you will say on that day, ‘I will give thanks to You, O LORD; For although You were angry with me, Your anger has turned away, And You comforted me.”

They worship in gratitude because God has turned His anger from them.

And God would do this by turning His anger toward Christ.
• ON THE CROSS, God treated Jesus as though He were a sinner so that God
could treat His remnant as though they are His sons.
• He imputed our sin to Christ and He imputes His righteousness to us.

And in a moment those who are enemies are reconciled and adopted.

What other response could there be to such a salvation but gratitude?

The Christian life is a life characterized by gratitude toward God.
• We are no longer grumblers like those in the wilderness.
• We are no longer characterized by bitterness and complaining.

• Even in adversity we fall down like Job and say, “The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away, blessed be the name of the LORD.”

The worship of the redeemed is filled with gratitude for an undeserved salvation.
• He has moved us from condemnation to comfort.
• We were His enemies, but He has redeemed us and made us sons.

We saw another new aspect of their worship.
2) THEIR FAITH: They went from fear to faith

(2) “Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; For the LORD GOD is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation.”

• No longer do they view God as a dreadful enemy.
• No longer do they shy away from His presence.

Now they proclaim, “I will trust and not be afraid.”
The nearness of God is my good!

They don’t want God to keep His distance,
They want to draw as near to God as they possibly can.

“the LORD GOD is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation.”

He didn’t just save me, He IS my salvation.
• He is what I was missing.
• He is what I was longing for.

My unfulfillment and bitterness and struggle
Was because I was too far away from Him.
It is His return into my life that has made all the difference.

That is a CHANGE in the life of the redeemed.
• They used to despise His presence.
• They used to want to hide in the caves from the Holy One of Israel.

Now through the blood of Jesus they tear through the veil
And go boldly into the holy place to commune with their heavenly Father.

It is a change that was made in their lives.

And we saw one more change in their worship.
3) JOY: They went from cisterns to springs

(3) “Therefore you will joyously draw water from the springs of salvation.”

We remember that conversation Jesus had with the woman at the well.
John 4:10-14 “Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” She said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water? “You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?” Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

We remember His sermon in Jerusalem:
John 7:37-38 “Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”

When we come to Jesus we don’t drink out of a stagnant old cistern,
We drink from fresh springs of living water.

Old religion with all its traditions and ordinances and burdens and yokes can be such a broken system.

• Israel was faithful to bring all those sacrifices and attend all those feasts and festivals
• And they hated it.
• It was a burden, it was dead.

But when Christ saves a person, and fills them with His Spirit,
Death is gone and life is new.

There is no burden, now it is joy!
And that joy is compared to “springs of salvation”

DO YOU REMEMBER when the children of Israel wandered in the desert?
• It was hot, it was dry, they were thirsty, and they grumbled against God.

Exodus 17:3-6 “But the people thirsted there for water; and they grumbled against Moses and said, “Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” So Moses cried out to the LORD, saying, “What shall I do to this people? A little more and they will stone me.” Then the LORD said to Moses, “Pass before the people and take with you some of the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. “Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.”

They grumbled against God for their thirst and God commanded Moses to strike the rock that it might yield to them water.

That scene is further explained to us in the New Testament.
1 Corinthians 10:4 “and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.”

• Paul said that even in that day it was Christ who gave them water.
• And that rock produced a river which followed them.

When that rock opened, it came out like Niagara Falls
And that river followed them throughout the desert
That they might have water and the life that comes with it.

AND THAT ROCK WAS A PICTURE OF CHRIST.

“Therefore you will joyously draw water from the springs of salvation.”

Raymond Ortlund wrote:
“The prospect of thirst, weary, dirty people pulling up bucket after bucket of fresh, cool water in endless supply – drinking deeply, pouring it over their heads, dunking their faces into it, splashing one another – that is a vision of God’s gifts of salvation widely shared. Joyfully drawing water from the wells of salvation is the very life of God, openly accessible to us all, entering into our actual experience. And the deeper we drink, the greater our praise.”
(Ortlund, Raymond [Isaiah: God Saves Sinners; Preaching The Word Commentary Series; Crossway Publishers; Wheaton, Il; 2005] pg. 123)

David said:
Psalms 63:1 “O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly; My soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You, In a dry and weary land where there is no water.”

THAT IS THE REALITY OF SALVATION.
It is joy like a river of water
To a man who has been walking through a desert.

It’s no wonder our worship is filled with joy now.
No longer cold and dead and dry, but we joyfully worship our King!

We saw that last Sunday night.
• As pardoned enemies and comforted rebels…
• He took those who hated Him and called them near…

And now as full recipients of God’s grace,
We are fully satisfied in Jesus!

That is the first great difference redemption makes in the remnant.
They once despised the Holy One,
Now they WORSHIP Him in gratitude, faith, and joy.

THIS MORNING, let’s look at the second major change that has occurred in their lives.

#2 THEIR WITNESS
Isaiah 12:4-6

You see the change in verse 4.

• Earlier, up in verse 1 the statement was “I will give thanks”

• Now in verse 4 this remnant is giving a directive to everyone else and commanding them to “Give thanks to the LORD”

It is not a testimony, it is a call.
They aren’t just worshipers, they are missionaries.

They have followed Isaiah’s example
And responded to God with a “Here am I. Send me!”

We can see aspects of their witness here as well.

1) THEIR SERMON: His Exalted Name (4)

“And in that day you will say, “Give thanks to the LORD, call on His name. Make known His deeds among the peoples; Make them remember that His name is exalted.”

What a sermon they preach!
It is all about the greatness of the LORD
And how sinful man must respond to Him.

YOU SEE HERE FIRST THAT there is an expectation that those who have been forgiven will now go and be ambassadors to others.

• There is no version of Christianity where one gets saved and then tells no one.
• There is no version of Christianity where a true believer takes his light and
hides it under a basket.

In fact, those who do that indicate that their salvation is not genuine.

Remember the Sermon on the Mount?
Jesus sarcastically confronted Israel for this very thing.
• They were convinced that they were a light to sinners in darkness.
• They were convinced that they were the carriers of truth.

Matthew 5:13-16 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

I hope you can hear the sarcasm in His confrontation there.
• You call yourselves the salt of the earth and yet you have no flavor.
• You call yourselves the light of the world and yet it must be hidden under a bucket.

No, if you were truly salt, you’d taste
And if you were truly light you’d shine.

Luke 8:16 “Now no one after lighting a lamp covers it over with a container, or puts it under a bed; but he puts it on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see the light.”

Those who have been saved tell others about their salvation.

That is why Spurgeon said:
“Every Christian is either a missionary or an imposter.”

You see that expectation here.
• You’ve been saved.
• You’ve been redeemed.
• You’ve been moved from being an enemy to being a son.
• You’ve found true fulfillment and joy.

Go and proclaim to others what you have found!

And look at this sermon, it is great!

• In fact, do you want to know what you should go and preach to sinners?
• Are you looking for a simple sermon to preach to the lost?

WELL CHECK THIS ONE OUT.
(It’s a 3 point sermon)

“Give thanks” – it is a call for sinners to realize the grace of God in their lives.

• Paul taught us in Romans 1 that an unredeemed world does not honor Him as God or give thanks.

So go to the lost, show them the greatness of God.
Show them the benefits they have received from His hand
And tell them that they owe God gratitude.

Do you remember Paul’s preaching in Athens?
He was surrounded by pagans but notice what he preached.

Acts 17:24-25 “The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things;”

That is not only a reminder of the greatness and glory of God,
But it is also a reminder that you owe your very life to Him.

“He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things.”

You wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Him.

That’s a great way to start a sermon to the lost!
You should recognize what God has already done for you and humble yourself and thank Him for it.
But it’s more than just telling God, “Thank You” for giving you life.

There is an EXPECTATION for sinners as well.

“call on His name” – it is a gospel directive to sinners that they must submit to Him as Lord and trust in Him alone for salvation.

• They are sinful men and they need salvation.

When Paul continues preaching in Athens he went on to say:
Acts 17:26-27 “and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;”

It is a reminder to the lost that they were put here for a purpose.
• It is not to please themselves, but to please the One who made them.
• They are here to seek God and submit their lives to Him.

That is another great message to the lost.

And finally:
“Make them remember that His name is exalted” – when sinners don’t want to seek and submit to Him then remind them who He is and that bowing to Him is not optional.

Paul went on to say:
Acts 17:30-31 “Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.”

See when we go to the world we aren’t salesmen
Who are seeking to sell salvation to sinners.

We aren’t out there trying to make God look as good as possible
So that sinners might want to give Him a try.

We are heralds who proclaim to sinners what God demands of them.
• Their response to Him is not optional.
• This is not a “take it or leave it” offer.

“Make them remember that His name is exalted.”

They need to know that He is the high and exalted One
And that every knee will bow to Him.

Peter preached at Pentecost and said:
Acts 2:33-35 “Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear. “For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says: ‘THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, “SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET.” ’

• And when the people heard that they were gripped with fear and asked what they should do.
• Peter told them to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus.
• They had to submit to Him as Lord!

THIS IS WHAT THE REDEEMED DO.
Having been saved, they become preachers of the glory of God to the world.

It is a change that God brings about in their heart.
And you see the sermon they preach.
It is about His exalted name.
He has the name that is above every name! He is Lord!

But that’s not all you see from these witnesses. It’s not just a sermon.
2) THEIR SONG: His Excellent Deeds (5)

“Praise the LORD in song, for He has done excellent things; Let this be known throughout the earth.”

It is a song of praise and it is worship
Like what we saw in the first 3 verses.

The difference is that the song in verses 1-3 occurred in the sanctuary,
This one is sung “throughout the earth”
• This is an evangelistic song.
• This is a song of praise for the world to hear.

This is the song of Paul and Silas in the Philippian jail, having been severely flogged and placed in the stocks, now at midnight singing hymns of praise to God.
• Even in their adversity…
• Even in their persecution…
• They marvel the world because they sing “He has done excellent things”

Want to blow the mind of the world?
Then praise God for doing excellent things
While you are in the midst of your tribulation.

Anyone can praise God when they score a touchdown
Or get a new car or on payday.

But sing of His excellent things in the jail cell
After having been flogged and the world will wonder.

This is the song of the redeemed.
This is the song of the remnant.

They PREACH that His name is exalted
Then they SING of all the great things He has done.

Their Sermon, Their Song
3) THEIR SHOUT: His Eminent Presence (6)

“Cry aloud and shout for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, For great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.”

“Cry aloud and shout for joy”
It sounds like a stadium full of fans who just witnessed a homerun.

It is the very OPPOSITE of Isaiah’s cry in the temple.

Isaiah, in his hypocrisy cried “OUI – DAMAH”
Remember? “Woe!” “I am undone!”

He shouted of his own demise.
• God’s nearness was not a good thing.
• He was a sinful hypocrite
• A sinful hypocrite does not want to be in the presence of God.

But now we see redemption.
• Now forgiveness has occurred.
• And this shout is different.

This shout is a “shout for joy”
And they are joyful because “great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.”

Do you see how they have come full circle from what they were?

Isaiah 1:4 “Alas, sinful nation, People weighed down with iniquity, Offspring of evildoers, Sons who act corruptly! They have abandoned the LORD, They have despised the Holy One of Israel, They have turned away from Him.”

When we started Isaiah we were confronted with a people
Who wanted nothing to do with the presence of God.

We read words like “abandoned”, “despised”, and “turned away”
That is the behavior of lost men.

But now, they have been saved.
Now they have been forgiven.

And now they shout for joy at His presence.

They shout: “Behold our God seated on His throne. Come, let us adore Him!
Behold our King! Nothing can compare. Come, let us adore Him!”

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.”

It is men who once despised the presence of God
And now they shout for joy at His arrival.

They are heralds!
They are like John the Baptist crying out, “Make straight the way of the LORD!”

THAT IS WHO THE REDEEMED ARE!
• They have moved from enemy to worshiper.
• They have moved from hypocrite to witness.

• They love Christ!
• They love His appearing!
• They long to announce it to the world!

It is the change God has wrought in the heart of those He has saved.

And the obvious and only question is:
Has this change been wrought in your heart?

• Are you filled with gratitude?
• Are you filled with faith?
• Are you filled with joy?

• Do you preach His exalted name to the world?
• Do you sing of His excellent deeds?
• Do you shout of His eminent presence to the world?

That is what the remnant does.
If that is not you, perhaps you are stuck
In that same cold dead religious cistern of hypocrisy
That Isaiah and his contemporaries were in.

Perhaps it is time for you also to repent and return to Christ.

But for THOSE WHO ARE REDEEMED
All we seek to do is worship and witness of His greatness.

And that is why we come to the Lord’s Supper this morning.
It is both a time of worship and a time of witness.

1 Corinthians 11:25-26 “In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.”

When we partake we do so with GRATITUDE, FAITH, and JOY.
• For we were enemies made sons.
• Our fear of His judgment has been removed.
• He has satisfied us with unspeakable joy.

This is a time of worship for us.

But it is also a Witness.
For Paul says, “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.”

This is our testimony
• Of the all-sufficient sacrifice of our Savior.
• That His death is the only means of atonement.
• And that He will return to claim what He has purchased.

So this morning, as we always do,
We will have a TIME OF PREPARATION to examine ourselves.

And then we will partake in gratitude, faith, and joy
As we bear witness that only the death of Christ can bring life.

The Remnant Song – part 1
Isaiah 12:1-6 (1-3)
June 11, 2023

Throughout history, times of God’s deliverance
Have been received with songs of joy by God’s people.

As Moses watched the Egyptians drowned in the sea
Exodus 15:1 “Then Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song to the LORD, and said, “I will sing to the LORD, for He is highly exalted; The horse and its rider He has hurled into the sea.”

When God delivered Deborah and Barak from Jabin King of Canaan
Judges 5:1-3 “Then Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam sang on that day, saying, “That the leaders led in Israel, That the people volunteered, Bless the LORD! “Hear, O kings; give ear, O rulers! I—to the LORD, I will sing, I will sing praise to the LORD, the God of Israel.”

After David killed Goliath
1 Samuel 18:7 “The women sang as they played, and said, “Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands.”

When the refugees returned from Babylon and the temple foundation was laid.
Ezra 3:10-11 “Now when the builders had laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, the priests stood in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the LORD according to the directions of King David of Israel. They sang, praising and giving thanks to the LORD, saying, “For He is good, for His lovingkindness is upon Israel forever.” And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the LORD because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.”

When the 144,000 are sealed and saved in the great tribulation.
Revelation 14:1-3 “Then I looked, and behold, the Lamb was standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His name and the name of His Father written on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder, and the voice which I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps. And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders; and no one could learn the song except the one hundred and forty-four thousand who had been purchased from the earth.”

It is the proper response for God’s people to sing His praises,
Especially during seasons of salvation.

We are told by Paul that the church today, having been saved by the grace of God and filled with His Spirit should even speak to one another in “songs and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord.”

It is fitting for those whom God has saved to sing songs of praise to Him.

And that is exactly what we have in Isaiah 12.
• It is the song of the remnant.
• It is the song of those who have been called home.
• It is the song of those who have been saved.

IN ISAIAH’S DAY it would be all those who were saved from the Assyrian invasion.
• Certainly this song would be sang in Jerusalem as Assyria departed.

IN A PROPHETIC SENSE, it is the song that will be sung by those who enter the millennium and see Christ reigning upon the earth.

AND YET, IN A PERSONAL SENSE it remains my song and your song as those who have been saved from sin and judgment.

It is the song of those who have been saved.

And we have learned from Isaiah that THIS IS NOT EVERYONE.

Isaiah 1:7-9 “Your land is desolate, Your cities are burned with fire, Your fields—strangers are devouring them in your presence; It is desolation, as overthrown by strangers. The daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, Like a watchman’s hut in a cucumber field, like a besieged city. Unless the LORD of hosts Had left us a few survivors, We would be like Sodom, We would be like Gomorrah.”

• This is the song of those “few survivors” Isaiah spoke of.

Isaiah 6:13 “Yet there will be a tenth portion in it, And it will again be subject to burning, Like a terebinth or an oak Whose stump remains when it is felled. The holy seed is its stump.”

• This is the song of that “tenth portion” God promised.

Isaiah 10:21-22 “A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. For though your people, O Israel, may be like the sand of the sea, Only a remnant within them will return; A destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness.”

• This is the song of “the remnant” who have returned.

The whole world doesn’t sing it,
But surely those of us who have been saved
Gladly join our voices together and sing it with all our might.

And what you will notice as we look at this song, is that

It is a song that celebrates the change
That God has performed in the life of His remnant.

• They have moved from judgment to salvation.
• They have moved from fear of God to love of God.
• They have moved from religion to a relationship.
• They have moved from despising God to proclaiming Him.
• They have moved from abandoning God to drawing near to Him.

This song reflects the evidence of salvation
Having been worked out in their lives.

2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”

So let’s work our way through it tonight
And see the difference salvation has made in their lives.

2 notable differences.
#1 THEIR WORSHIP
Isaiah 12:1-3

We certainly recognize the first line.
“Then you will say on that day,”

WHAT DAY?
Well it’s the day we’ve been studying in chapter 11.
• The day when Christ descends to deliver us from our enemy.
• The day when Christ casts the beast and the antichrist into hell.
• The day when Christ binds Satan for 1,000 years.
• The day when Christ ascends to the throne of the world.
• The day when Christ rules and judges with justice and righteousness.
• The day when Christ’s peace covers the whole earth.
• The day when Christ’s remnant returns to dwell with Him.

“Then you will say on that day, I will give thanks to You, O LORD;”

And after such a great salvation we see how different their song becomes.

1) GRATITUDE: From Condemnation to Comfort (1)

It is a day of personal gratitude.
• It is a day when “I will give thanks”

It is SOLI DEO GLORIA fully manifested.
No one else will receive the glory for what has transpired on the earth.
• No human leader…
• No politician…
• No humanitarian influence…

The peace and salvation that will have fallen on this earth
Will be attributed to One and One only.
Men will give thanks to Christ alone on that day.

This is not something they did before salvation.

This is certainly NOT something the unredeemed do.
In fact, Paul outlined the world’s lack of gratitude as part of the reason they reside under God’s wrath.

Romans 1:21 “For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.”

The fallen world does not “give thanks” to God,
But on this day, that is the first thing the redeemed remnant will do.

And WHY specifically will this redeemed remnant give thanks?
• Thanks for judging the wicked?
• Thanks for bringing world peace?
• Thanks for letting me pet a wolf or a cobra?

Look at why the remnant will give thanks.
“For although You were angry with me, Your anger is turned away, And You comfort me.”

They give thanks because they have been moved
From a position of condemnation to a position of comfort.

The song states that “You were angry with me”

Certainly in Isaiah’s day we saw God’s anger.
Do you remember chapter 9?
• Do you remember God unleashing judgment of various kinds on Israel
• And then Isaiah repeating the phrase over and over, “In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away And His hand is still stretched out.”

These people had offended God and He was angry.

WE ARE JUST LIKE THEM.
• God has been angry with each of us for good reason.
• We have deserved His condemnation.
• Our great, great, great…granddaddy Adam transgressed God
• And we walked in his shoes.

Romans 5:12 “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned”

We all did it.
Genesis 6:5 “Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

Romans 3:18 “THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES.”

How true is all of that!
It has been with good reason that God has been angry with humanity.

And INCIDENTALLY, the redeemed know that.
One who has never come to grips with that reality, is not saved.

Matthew 5:3-4 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

• Salvation occurs for those who have felt God’s anger and condemnation.
• Salvation occurs for those who have felt the weight of their sin and mourned
over their pitiful condition.

Men don’t march into the kingdom of heaven with their heads held high,
They crawl in broken before the Holy One.

Charles Spurgeon said:
“God does not clothe us till He has stripped us, He does not heal till first He has wounded. How should He make alive those who are not dead? There is a work of grace in the heart of digging out the foundations, before grace begins to build up our hopes: woe to that man who builds without having the foundations dug out, for his house will fall. Woe to that man who leaps into a sudden peace without ever having felt his need of pardon, without repentance, without brokenness of his spirit; he shall see his hasty fruit wither before his eyes.”
(Spurgeon, Charles [The Treasury of the Bible; The Old Testament Vol. III; Marshall, Morgan & Scott, Limited London Edinburgh] “A New Song For New Hearts” Isaiah xii. I. pg. 468)

The reason for the gratitude of the remnant
Is because they have felt the sting of God’s fury.

They are well-aware of the just wrath that should abide on them.
They know what they are, what they have done, and what they deserve.
They felt God’s anger and agreed that it was just.

BUT THEY REJOICE NOW Because “Your anger is turned away”

They offered no appeasing work…
They offered no satisfactory argument…
God, by His grace, has chosen to let go of His anger on their behalf.

And we know WHY.
Matthew 27:46 “About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?” that is, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?”

The Father turned away from His only begotten Son and afflicted Him with wrath that His wrath might turn away from us.

Our forgiveness was purchased.
Our pardon was negotiated through the death of Jesus Christ.

God poured all the anger due to us out on Him.
“And You comfort me”

He who should have received comfort from the Father received wrath,
And we who should have received wrath have received comfort.

If you have picked up on it,
Isaiah 12:1 is the Old Testament version of 2 Corinthians 5:21

2 Corinthians 5:21 “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

It is the same truth.
• God has taken objects of wrath and made them objects of mercy.
• God has taken those under condemnation and comforted them.

2 Corinthians 1:3-5 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ.”

Is there any wonder now that a song of gratitude is being sung?

How could anyone convinced of the justice of condemnation
Not overflow with gratitude upon receiving a merciful pardon?

It is a man who is marching in chains to the gallows convinced that his death is just, only to find that the man charged to throw the lever INSTEAD removes his chains, nurses his wounds, and consoles his tears.

How much gratitude should be felt for such an act?
How grateful should you be for God’s mercy?

• Does it merit singing?
• Does it merit loud singing?
• Does it merit long singing?

Of course it does! And the remnant gladly sing it!

They were once dead in sin and doomed to suffer.
BUT GOD, according to His amazing grace has made us alive and seated us with Christ.

Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Certainly this is a song that ISAIAH’S CONTEMPORARIES could sing as the Assyrians departed.
• God was angry and sent the Assyrians against us,
• But He has removed His anger and comforted us with the promise that not one soldier will shoot a single arrow here.

Certainly on the day when THE REMNANT enters the millennium and sees Christ on the throne they will sing.
• God was angry with us and we walked through the great tribulation and endured 7 years of fury under the antichrist,
• But He has removed His anger and comforted us with His coming and the antichrist has been thrown into the lake of fire.

Certainly this is a song that WE can sing today.
• God was angry with us and we felt the fury of His condemnation and conviction, even the discipline of His hand,
• But He has removed His anger and comforted us with His Holy Spirit and promises of love and salvation and an inheritance with Him.

The world doesn’t sing that song.
Before salvation we didn’t sing that song.
That is the remnant song.
That is our song.

It’s a song of gratitude for we have moved from condemnation to comfort.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL.

We see another difference in the song of these people.
2) FAITH: From fear to faith (2)

Certainly we remember the fear that had swept over the children of Judah as they saw that alliance between Israel and Aram.

Isaiah 7:2 “When it was reported to the house of David, saying, “The Arameans have camped in Ephraim,” his heart and the hearts of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake with the wind.”

But the fear spoken of here is NOT even that fear.

The fear spoken of here is a fear of God.
(Not the healthy fear where we stand in awe of Him, but the fear that makes men turn away from Him. A fear that is better expressed with disdain and hatred)

It is the fear Isaiah had when he cried, “Woe is me!” in the temple.

It is the fear Isaiah spoke of in chapter 2
Isaiah 2:20-21 “In that day men will cast away to the moles and the bats Their idols of silver and their idols of gold, Which they made for themselves to worship, In order to go into the caverns of the rocks and the clefts of the cliffs Before the terror of the LORD and the splendor of His majesty, When He arises to make the earth tremble.”

That same fear we see in the great tribulation.
Revelation 6:15-17 “Then the kings of the earth and the great men and the commanders and the rich and the strong and every slave and free man hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains; and they said to the mountains and to the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”

This is the fear that each of us felt
As we contemplated our judgment before God.

We, like Isaiah, could cry, “I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips…for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.”

• It is the fear of standing before Him.
• It is the fear of His coming.
• It is the dread of the day that He comes to judge the living and the dead.
• It is the fear of death which ushers us into the His holy presence.

THAT IS THE FEAR WE ARE TALKING ABOUT.

But God has done something for the redeemed.
He has moved them from fear to faith.

“Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid;”

There has been such a work done in the heart of this remnant
That no longer is God One to be dreaded are neglected
Or One to hide from.

No, God has become the One to DRAW NEAR to.

“God IS my salvation”

• Not just “God saved me”, but God IS salvation to me.
• No longer do I hide from Him, now I draw near to Him.

Psalms 73:28 “But as for me, the nearness of God is my good; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, That I may tell of all Your works.”

• God becomes “my refuge”
• God becomes “my hiding place”
• God becomes “my strong tower”
• I live and dwell and rest “in Him”

Unredeemed men do not grasp that.
To the world God is to be kept at arm’s length.
The world doesn’t want God anywhere near.
• His holiness is detestable.
• His justice is terrifying.
• The farther God can be kept from any situation the better.

When and unredeemed Peter realized who Jesus was.
Luke 5:8 “But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!”

When the unredeemed pagans saw the power of Jesus to cast out demons and send them into pigs:
Matthew 8:34 “And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw Him, they implored Him to leave their region.”

Even when His hometown learned of His power to save and His holiness to confront sinners:
Luke 4:28-29 “And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things; and they got up and drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff.”

The world does not crave the nearness of God.

You see a fear there, but perhaps it is better understood as hatred.
They don’t want His holiness anywhere near their lives.

BUT AFTER REDEMPTION: God is their Savior and their salvation.

1 John 4:16-18 “We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.”

Because of the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ
We no longer live in fear or hatred of God’s presence.

We are clothed in the righteousness of Christ.
We are made acceptable to the Father.
He has justified us through the offering of His Son.

We don’t flee from Him, we rest in His bosom.

Hebrews 10:19-22 “Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.”

To the redeemed remnant God is not One to avoid, He is One to pursue.
• We love to approach Him in prayer.
• We love to sit under His word.
• We love to gather with His people.
• We love to hear His word preached.
• We love to sing songs of praise.

We would draw as near to God as we possibly can!

“For the LORD GOD is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation.”

Again, NOT “He has saved me” but rather “He has become my salvation”
• It’s NOT JUST that He saved me from an enemy.
• It’s NOT JUST that He saved me from wrath.

The remnant has grown to understand that it was
His absence and His distance that was the source of their affliction.

He is what they were missing.
Only His presence could satisfy.
He is not only their Savior, His presence is their salvation.

HE IS WHAT THIS WORLD WAS MISSING.

MEN TODAY look to Jesus to fix the problems of this world,

But they want Him to do it from a distance.

“You just stay in heaven, out of my business, but do something about the problems we are seeing on earth.”

Whereas the remnant has learned that
It is His absence that is the problem.
Nothing is fixed until He is present.

His presence changes everything.

And certainly that was what the remnant in Isaiah’s day understood.
• Offending God had not worked well for them,
• But on the day that Hezekiah drew near to God and laid that letter out before Him,
• God’s presence made all the difference.
• He didn’t just save them, He was their salvation.

Certainly those who go through the tribulation will learn that God’s absence is not a good thing.
• The more you see God pull back during the tribulation the more chaos ensues.
• But on the day that Jesus returns, His presence makes all the difference.

And also this is true in our lives.
• Living without the Lord in our lives was only chaos and conviction and evil consequences.
• But on the day when Christ saved and His Holy Spirit moved in to our lives His presence became our salvation.

We sing this song as they sang this song!
• It is a song of gratitude for we have moved from condemnation to comfort.
• It is a song of faith for we have moved from fear to faith.

There is still one more change in their worship
3) JOY: From cisterns of religion to springs of salvation (3)

The cisterns of religion are not here mentioned,
But you are well-aware that this is what they sought.

Jeremiah spoke of it:
Jeremiah 2:13 “For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, The fountain of living waters, To hew for themselves cisterns, Broken cisterns That can hold no water.”

Jeremiah spoke of how they traded living water for some manmade broken cistern that can’t hold water. That is, that cannot save.

And this was certainly their routine and ritualistic religion.

Isaiah did speak of the ineffectiveness of that.
Isaiah 1:10-15 “Hear the word of the LORD, You rulers of Sodom; Give ear to the instruction of our God, You people of Gomorrah. “What are your multiplied sacrifices to Me?” Says the LORD. “I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams And the fat of fed cattle; And I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls, lambs or goats. “When you come to appear before Me, Who requires of you this trampling of My courts? “Bring your worthless offerings no longer, Incense is an abomination to Me. New moon and sabbath, the calling of assemblies— I cannot endure iniquity and the solemn assembly. “I hate your new moon festivals and your appointed feasts, They have become a burden to Me; I am weary of bearing them. “So when you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide My eyes from you; Yes, even though you multiply prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are covered with blood.”

It was men who had no relationship with God,
They only had the shackles and burdens of religion.

Everything they knew of God was bound up in “Do this, don’t do that”.

It was a cold religious experience
• One that even Jesus described as a burden which makes men “weary and heavy-laden”
• Peter called it “a yoke which neither we nor our fathers could bear”

But it is where men have routinely gone.

Through the deceptions of legalism and the allure of human pride
Men have always sought to appease God through their own efforts.

And it is a foul and smelly and broken cistern
Full of stagnant water that never benefited anyone.

BUT THE SALVATION OF JESUS CHRIST IS NOTHING LIKE THAT.

One day Jesus stood at a well, a hole in the ground.
• And He spoke to a woman whose most concerning religious question was
which mountain she should worship God on.

And Jesus spoke to that woman:

Lady, you have no idea what joy I could give you through My salvation!

Later in the temple, Jesus stood to preach:
John 7:37-38 “Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”

THE WORLD KNOWS NOTHING OF THAT.

TO THEM IT IS ALL RELIGION.
• It is broadened phylacteries and lengthened tassels on their garments.
• It is a list of man-made requirements that God might be pleased.

Or it is such frustration and anger
• At the lack of effectiveness of such ordinances
• That man has quit trying all-together
• And decided to seek joy and peace and happiness in sin.

IT IS A BROKEN SYSTEM.

But the remnant knows better.
The redeemed have found something greater.

They have found what Jesus spoke of.
• They have found His mercy like we read in verse 1.
• They have found the wonder of His presence like we read in verse 2.
• And now they have fullness of joy!

“Therefore you will joyously draw water From the springs of salvation.”

John 15:7-11 “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. “My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. “Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love. “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. “These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.”

Jesus spoke there of joy
That transcends happiness or circumstances.

What is this joy that could allow Paul and Silas to sing in prison after having been beaten?

What is this joy that could allow the apostles to rejoice that they had been counted worthy to suffer for Christ?

What is this joy could allow Paul to say “I have suffered the loss of all things and count them but rubbish”?

What is this when James says, “Count it all joy brethren when you encounter various trials”?

It certainly isn’t circumstance based.
It certainly doesn’t fluctuate with the mood.

BUT THAT IS ALL THE WORLD KNOWS.
• They know happiness when they acquire some treasure they wanted.
• They know happiness when their sinful flesh is momentarily gratified.
• They know happiness when their sporting team wins.
• They know happiness when they do something fun.

But that is NOT the joy of the Lord.

The Lord’s joy is that which transcends circumstances.
The Lord’s joy shines brightest in the bleakest of circumstances.

It is deep seeded satisfaction in Him.
• It is manifest as a peace which surpasses all comprehension.
• It is seen as a comfort in the most violent of storms.
• It is seen as a contentment when there is not a surplus.

That a person can have only Jesus and be so fulfilled in that reality.

That is the joy of the Lord. – and the redeemed have it
That is the joy of the redeemed in Isaiah’s day.
• They have seen Assyria march on their capital.
• They have seen cities burned and crops ruined and vineyards demolished.

But the Lord has delivered them and the Lord is with them and so now they rejoice because He alone is enough.

That is the joy of the tribulation survivors.
• They have seen the world fall under plagues and fires and supernatural judgments.
• They have seen economies collapse.
• They have experienced the inability to buy food because they won’t take the mark.
• They have nothing.

But on the day that Jesus splits the sky and delivers,
He is all they need and they rejoice!

And this is the joy of the redeemed today.
• We have felt the weight and grief of our sin.
• We have grasped our due judgment.

But Christ has forgiven us and filled us with His Spirit
and that alone is enough for us.

Our joy does not depend on worldly circumstances,
We have Jesus Christ and He is more than enough!

THIS IS THE REMNANT SONG.
It is worship that is foreign to the world and unique to the remnant.

• We sing in GRATITUDE for He has moved us from condemnation to comfort.
• We sing in FAITH for He has moved us from fear to faith.
• We sing in JOY for He has rescued us from our broken cisterns and given us springs of salvation.

This is our song!

We sing it now!
And One day we will sing to Him face to face!

NEXT TIME WE’LL LOOK AT THE OTHER DIFFERENCE SALVATION HAS PROVIDED. FIRST IN OUR WORSHIP, SECONDLY IN OUR WITNESS

The Saving King – part 5
Isaiah 11:1-16 (11-16)
June 11, 2023

In 722 BC – Assyria conquered the northern kingdom of Israel.
• Assyrian journals and records indicate that they carried away over 27,000 Jews into exile.
• Those Jews never returned.

In 586 BC – Babylon conquered the southern kingdom of Judah.
• Biblical data indicates somewhere around 18,000 Jews were marched off to Babylon where they would be for 70 years.
• Though certainly they married and multiplied while in Babylon for 70 years only 42,000 would come home at the end of the exile.

Israel would also be scattered by nations like Greece and Rome.

Even in modern times Israel has been forced to flee
And scatter from their homes even while living in foreign countries.

• Between 1880-1920 it is reported that 2 million Jews fled from Russia.
• By 1939, 282,000 Jews had fled Germany and 117,000 fled Austria.

Today census reports tell us that only 6.8 million Jews actually live in Israel.
• 6.7 million live in the US
• 450,000 live in France
• 392,000 live in Canada
• 292,000 live in the UK
• 180,000 live in Argentina
• 165,000 live in Russia
• 118,000 live in Germany
• 118,000 live in Australia
• 92,000 live in Brazil

The point being that the nation of Israel is a scattered people.
They are like a deck of cards that has been shuffled
And reshuffled and then shuffled again.

They are dispersed and intertwined into every nation on the planet.
Few if any have any idea what tribe they are from.

If one were to try and re-do the conquest and bring every Jew back to her land and appropriate it out according to their tribes as they did in the days of Moses and Joshua it would be VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE.

Almost as impossible as say, a wolf dwelling with a lamb
Or a child playing near a cobra’s den.

BUT THEN AGAIN, JESUS IS NO ORDINARY KING.
When He comes to reign
“Impossible” is a word that will need to be rethought.

For Jesus knows every single one of His sheep.
• He knows where they are.
• He knows who they are.
• He knows how many hairs are on their head.
• And Jesus is the Good Shepherd who promised to lose none.

He searches for them and finds them and brings them home.

And on the day He reigns as king, that is precisely what He will do.

Ezekiel lamented in his day all the bad shepherds who had abandoned and abused God’s flock and left them scattered on every high hill.

BUT EZEKIEL ALSO SAW A DAY when the truly Good Shepherd
Would come and gather them all back.

Ezekiel 34:11-16 “For thus says the Lord GOD, “Behold, I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out. “As a shepherd cares for his herd in the day when he is among his scattered sheep, so I will care for My sheep and will deliver them from all the places to which they were scattered on a cloudy and gloomy day. “I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries and bring them to their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the streams, and in all the inhabited places of the land. “I will feed them in a good pasture, and their grazing ground will be on the mountain heights of Israel. There they will lie down on good grazing ground and feed in rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. “I will feed My flock and I will lead them to rest,” declares the Lord GOD. “I will seek the lost, bring back the scattered, bind up the broken and strengthen the sick; but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with judgment.”

Ezekiel 34:25-31 “I will make a covenant of peace with them and eliminate harmful beasts from the land so that they may live securely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods. “I will make them and the places around My hill a blessing. And I will cause showers to come down in their season; they will be showers of blessing. “Also the tree of the field will yield its fruit and the earth will yield its increase, and they will be secure on their land. Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I have broken the bars of their yoke and have delivered them from the hand of those who enslaved them. “They will no longer be a prey to the nations, and the beasts of the earth will not devour them; but they will live securely, and no one will make them afraid. “I will establish for them a renowned planting place, and they will not again be victims of famine in the land, and they will not endure the insults of the nations anymore. “Then they will know that I, the LORD their God, am with them, and that they, the house of Israel, are My people,” declares the Lord GOD. “As for you, My sheep, the sheep of My pasture, you are men, and I am your God,” declares the Lord GOD.”

Jesus will rescue, gather, and secure His sheep.
AND THAT IS WHAT WE SEE HERE.

As you know we are looking at a section in Isaiah’s ministry
That deals with THE SALVATION OF THE REMNANT.

It started in chapter 7 and it goes through chapter 12.
• It deals with Israel’s lack of trust.
• It deals with God’s subsequent discipline.
• It deals with the remnant’s repentance and return.
• It deals with God’s deliverance.

Chapter 11 it shows us the King who will make it all possible.
We see His glorious reign upon the earth.

I MIGHT REMIND YOU THAT this is a day that is brought on by the repentance and return of the remnant of Israel back to Christ.

When Peter preached in Jerusalem, just shortly after Pentecost he said:
Acts 3:17-21 “And now, brethren, I know that you acted in ignorance, just as your rulers did also. “But the things which God announced beforehand by the mouth of all the prophets, that His Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. “Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you, whom heaven must receive until the period of restoration of all things about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time.”

Peter said
• Jesus Christ has fulfilled everything spoken of Him regarding His suffering
and death and atonement and resurrection.
• All we wait for now is for Israel to repent and return and submit to Jesus as
their rightful King.

• And when they do, “times of refreshing [will] come from the presence of
the Lord” and God will “send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you”

ISAIAH IS TELLING THE SAME STORY.

He spoke of the remnant’s repentance in return in Isaiah 10:21
Now we see the presence of the King in Isaiah 11.

This is the One Isaiah saw in the temple.
This is none other than Jesus Christ, reigning on the earth.

And we have been looking at Him over the last couple of weeks.

#1 HIS REPUTATION
Isaiah 11:1-2

• That He is from David’s line.
• That He is anointed by God.
• That He is supremely qualified.

#2 HIS RULE
Isaiah 11:3-5

• That He will rule with perfect righteousness.
• No more corruption, no more negligence.
• He will judge with righteousness on this earth.

#3 HIS RESULT
Isaiah 11:6-9

• Nothing short of world peace.
• He is the Prince of Peace and He will bring it.
• The wolf with the lamb, the bear with the cow, the child with the viper

Because He will eradicate sin
He will also eradicate the curse that comes with it.

“there will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace.”

#4 HIS REST
Isaiah 11:10

Very simply put, “His resting place will be glorious”

HE WILL REST in a job completely finished as all His children are atoned for and brought home.

WE WILL REST IN HIM as those who are with Him and no longer battling the temptations of sin.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE REIGN OF THIS KING.

This morning we see a 5th reality about his King.
#5 HIS RECOVERY
Isaiah 11:11-16

These verses summarize His mission,
It is very simply A Recovery Mission.

He will: BRING THEM HOME

We think of the families in years past
Who had sons go off to war and who received telegrams that said, “Missing in Action”
Or notifications that their child had been captured and was now a “Prisoner of War”

Probably many of you watched the movie “Saving Private Ryan” which was a very realistic WWII film based on a true story of an effort to find one private in the war and to bring him home to his mother who had already lost her 3 other sons in the war.

It was a mission to get that boy home.

We think about current times with stories of child abductions and the pain associated with wondering where a person’s child might be and if they will ever come home.

WELL THAT IS REALITY IN ISAIAH’S DAY AS WELL.

As we mentioned earlier, the Northern Kingdom has been conquered
And the few survivors where carried away into Assyria.

The Southern Kingdom has been badly ravaged
As Assyria invaded and reached right to Jerusalem.

Isaiah’s prophetic words have come true.

This nation that God had chosen and blessed and multiplied
And moved into the land of Canaan
Had been ravaged and abused and scattered.

ONE MUST HAVE WONDERED If there was any way Israel would ever again be what she once was?

Back in the days of David and Solomon they were a united kingdom,
A prosperous kingdom, a mighty kingdom.

AND NOW LOOK AT HER.

Was their any hope of ever seeing her glory or her security restored?

And for that we look again to this mighty King
Who comes to bring His people home.

Let’s just work through our text this morning and see 3 truths Isaiah would reveal to us about this King’s recovery mission.

1) RECOVERY ANNOUNCED (11-12)

“Then it will happen on that day that the Lord Will again recover the second time with His hand The remnant of His people, who will remain, From Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamath, And from the islands of the sea. And He will lift up a standard for the nations And assemble the banished ones of Israel, And will gather the dispersed of Judah From the four corners of the earth.”

Isaiah says that “it will happen on that day”
On the day when Jesus Christ reigns this will be a reality.

He will “again recover the second time with His hand the remnant of His people”

“again recover the second time”?
The first time was Egypt when God brought Israel out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

What He did before, He will do again,

Only this time they won’t be only in Egypt, but will be “From Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamach, and from the islands of the sea” which was a reference to anyone across the water (like the U.S.A.)

• He will “assemble the banished ones”
• He will “gather the dispersed”
• And He will get them “from the four corners of the earth”

IT IS A GREAT RECOVERY PROJECT.

Zechariah 8:7-8 “Thus says the LORD of hosts, ‘Behold, I am going to save My people from the land of the east and from the land of the west; and I will bring them back and they will live in the midst of Jerusalem; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God in truth and righteousness.’”

But it is also IMPORTANT to notice HOW HE WILL DO IT.

(12) “And He will lift up a standard for the nations”

“standard” there is like a flag pole.

And we talked about this last Sunday night.
Isaiah 11:10 “Then in that day The nations will resort to the root of Jesse, Who will stand as a signal for the peoples; And His resting place will be glorious.”

• In verse 10 Jesus is referred to as “a signal for the peoples”
• Here in verse 12 He is lifting up “a standard”

I hope you remember what we are referring to.

John 3:14-15 “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.”

John 12:32 “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.”

• The reference here is to His cross.
• The reference here is to the One who was crucified on their behalf.

The catalyst for their return will be when Israel will finally
Look upon the One who was crucified on their behalf.

When Israel finally looks to their savior.
When they finally recognize the banner of the cross lifted high.
They have repented, now they must return to Him.

Zechariah 12:10 “I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.”

They will finally see that the One they rejected is the One who can save and they will flood to Him!

HE WILL RECOVER ALL THOSE FOR WHOM HE DIED!

And this is SUCH AN IMPORTANT ASPECT of what is going on here.

What you see taking place in Isaiah 11 is
The Son finally receiving the full reward of His suffering.

John Calvin wrote:
“…he will not allow himself to be deprived of his inheritance. We may sup it up by saying, that God will take care of the salvation of his Church, so as not to be robbed of his right.”
(Calvin, John [Calvin’s Commentaries Volume VII; Baker Books; Grand Rapids, MI; 2005] Pg. 389)

Paris Reidhead tells the story of the beginning of the Moravian Missionaries.
“Two young Moravians heard of an island in the West Indies where an atheist British owner had 2,000 to 3,000 slaves. And the owner had said, “No preacher, no clergyman will ever stay on this island. If he is shipwrecked we will keep him in a separate house until he has to leave, but he is never going to talk to any of us about God. I am through with all that nonsense.”
Three thousand slaves from the jungles of Africa brought to an
island in the Atlantic and there to live and die without hearing of Christ. Two young Moravians heard about it. They sold themselves to the British planter and used the money they received from their sale—for he paid no more than he would for any slave—to pay their passage out to his island for he wouldn’t even transport them. And as the ship left the river at Hamburg, left its pier in the river at Hamburg, and was going out into the North Sea carried with the tide; the Moravians had come here in hope to see these two lads off in their early 20s, never to return again. For this wasn’t a four year term. They had sold themselves into lifetime slavery simply that as slaves they could be as
Christians.
The families were there weeping for they knew they would never see them again. And they wondered why they were going and questioned the wisdom of it. And as the gap widened and the housings had been cast off and were being curled up there on the pier and the young boys saw the widening gap, one lad with his arm linked through the arm of his fellow raised his hand and shouted across the gap the last words that were heard from them. They were these. “May the Lamb that was slain receive the reward of his sufferings.”

Have you ever ordered something on the internet; made a purchase online?
• You paid for it with your credit card and waited for the item to be delivered.

But what if they never shipped the item? What if they never delivered it?
• Do you just say, “Oh well, easy come, easy go.”
• You just forget about it and move on?

No, you check the tracking number, you see where your item went,
Then you call the company, you demand a refund or something.

After all, you paid for that item. It is yours and you want it.

Well Peter said:
1 Peter 1:18-19 “… you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.”

Paul taught us that we were “bought with a price”.

Do we suppose that our Lord would purchase His own through the shedding of His own blood and then be content not to receive that which He purchased?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!
He died for them.
He will have them.

The standard is lifted, the cross is exalted,
And here His people are called home.
They are His and He will have them!

He will not lose those for whom He died.

Paul lays out this mystery us quite clearly in Romans 11.
Romans 11:1-5 “I say then, God has not rejected His people, has He? May it never be! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel? “Lord, THEY HAVE KILLED YOUR PROPHETS, THEY HAVE TORN DOWN YOUR ALTARS, AND I ALONE AM LEFT, AND THEY ARE SEEKING MY LIFE.” But what is the divine response to him? “I HAVE KEPT for Myself SEVEN THOUSAND MEN WHO HAVE NOT BOWED THE KNEE TO BAAL.” In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time a remnant according to God’s gracious choice.”

What a question!
“God has not rejected His people, has He?” “May it never be!”

Will He just cast aside those whom He has foreknown?
Will He so belittle the high price that was paid for their redemption?
ABSOLUTELY NOT!

But God has kept a remnant!
“there has also come to be at the present time a remnant according to God’s gracious choice”

Now certainly Israel has been afflicted for her unbelief.
Paul says in verses 6-10 that she was “broken off”
So that Gentiles might be grafted in.

It was part of God’s omniscient plan that by the Jews rejection of the gospel the apostles were motivated to take the gospel to the Gentiles and they were saved.

And so the Jewish rejection of the Messiah
Actually opened the door for Gentile salvation.

But that DOES NOT MEAN that God is finished with Israel.
• That does not mean that He will just cast aside those for whom He died.
• He will not just reject those whom He has foreknown.

Romans 11:25-27 “For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery—so that you will not be wise in your own estimation—that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in; and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, “THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB.” “THIS IS MY COVENANT WITH THEM, WHEN I TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS.”

They are His and He wants them.
He died for that remnant and that remnant will return.

He will lift up a standard and recover them
“from the four corners of the earth.”

It may seem like finding a NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK,
But rest assured our Lord will find every needle.

And He even knows what tribe they are all from.
• We read in Revelation that He will seal 12,000 from each tribe.
• They may have lost their paperwork, but He knows who they are.
• And He will recover every single one of them.

They will all come to the cross and weep for the One who they rejected.
AND HE WILL BRING THEM HOME!

Recovery Announced
2) RIVALRY ANNULLED (13-14)

“Then the jealousy of Ephraim will depart, And those who harass Judah will be cut off; Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah, And Judah will not harass Ephraim. They will swoop down on the slopes of the Philistines on the west; Together they will plunder the sons of the east; They will possess Edom and Moab, And the sons of Ammon will be subject to them.”

What do we make of this?

Only that it is MORE than just a geographical return.
• It is a return to righteousness.
• It is a return to peace.
• It is a return to love and unity.

They haven’t just been recovered, they have been regenerated.
Jealousy and harassment are gone.

After the split
• The northern kingdom was jealous of the southern kingdom for they had the temple and the glory of God.
• The southern kingdom harassed the northern kingdom for they were pagan and did not have God’s presence.

Together they were plundered and ravaged by the neighboring nations
Whom God used to discipline them for their sin.

But on this day, having been recovered and regenerated.
Jealousy and Harassment and External Discipline are gone!

We read last Sunday morning in Ephesians 2
• How Jesus Christ is our peace
• How He was able to make both Jews and Gentiles into one new man.

Ephesians 2:13-14 “But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall,”

Well the peace He will bring is not just between Jew and Gentile
But even between Jew and Jew.

IT IS PEACE BETWEEN JEW AND THE WORLD.
THE DAYS OF THEIR AFFLICTION WILL BE OVER.

This stubborn nation will have returned to Christ.
• They have been redeemed.
• They have been transformed.
• God’s Law will have been written on their heart.

And they will dwell in peace.
No more rivalry, no more division, no more animosity

God’s people are recovered and they are regenerated.

3) RETURN ACCOMPLISHED (15-16)

“And the LORD will utterly destroy The tongue of the Sea of Egypt; And He will wave His hand over the River With His scorching wind; And He will strike it into seven streams And make men walk over dry-shod. And there will be a highway from Assyria For the remnant of His people who will be left, Just as there was for Israel In the day that they came up out of the land of Egypt.”

We all remember the story of the Exodus with Moses.
• We remember how Moses stretched out his arms
• And the waters of the Red Sea parted before Israel
• And how they walked across on dry land.

Well God is going to do it again.
“the LORD will utterly destroy the tongue of the sea of Egypt”

That is the Gulf of Suez.
• When you look at the Red Sea it sort of has rabbit ears on the top.
• That left ear is the Gulf of Suez and God will dry it up again!

He will take the mighty Euphrates and “strike it into seven streams”
Thus allowing free passage across.

“Men will walk over dry-shod”
(that is without needing mud boots)

And the picture is that Egypt can’t hold back God’s people
And neither can Assyria.

(No one can, but those were the two nations that had tried in Isaiah’s day)

(16) “And there will be a highway from Assyria For the remnant of His people who will be left, Just as there was for Israel In the day that they came up out of the land of Egypt.”

This scene is certainly one that captivated Isaiah,
For he will speak of it again.

TURN TO: Isaiah 35:1-10
• It is God making a way for His people to return.
• He provides water and shade and gladness and joy.

TURN TO: Isaiah 49:8-13
• Again God makes a road for His people to travel home.

Psalms 121 “A Song of Ascents. I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; From where shall my help come? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel Will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; The LORD is your shade on your right hand. The sun will not smite you by day, Nor the moon by night. The LORD will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul. The LORD will guard your going out and your coming in From this time forth and forever.”

It is Jesus Christ bringing His people home.

Every October Spur turns itself upside down for an event.
We call it “Homecoming”

• Ex-graduates return to Spur to see old friends and reminisce about how great
they were in high school.
• I’m not from Spur, but for those who are, it seems to be a very important
weekend.

We understand a little bit when the Bible speaks of homecoming.

If you watch social media people like to video and share when SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN SURPRISE THEIR LOVED ONES by coming home.

We see children break into tears at the sight of a dad or mom,
Even dogs seems to get really excited.

I’m reminded of a story from a World War II documentary about a man who spent the entire war in a Japanese war camp having been captured in the Philippines.
He had thrown his dog tags into a pile of dead soldiers so that his parents would at least know what had happened to him and they had been told he was dead.
When the war was over and they escaped and he got home he called his house.
His mom, and two aunts all fainted upon hearing his voice.
It was an unbelievable homecoming.

Or perhaps we think of the famous homecoming story in the Bible.

Luke 15:20-24 “So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. “And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ “But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet; and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’ And they began to celebrate.”

Those are all the pictures of what we see here.

THEY ARE ALL COMING HOME!
He has saved them!
He has purchased them!

They have been abused and scattered
And dispersed to the 4 corners of the earth,
But He knows every single one of them and He will not lose one!

IT IS THE HOMECOMING OF THE AGES!

WHAT AN ENCOURAGING TRUTH this must have been FOR ISAIAH and his contemporaries.

• The Northern Kingdom was gone. They were exiled into Assyria
• And though they had not been on good terms with them
• It still must have stung to see people whom God had chosen carried off into a
foreign land.

But Isaiah reveals that this King does not forget His own
And will one day bring that remnant back.
THAT CERTAINLY WOULD HAVE ENCOURAGED ISAIAH

AND THIS IS SO IMPORTANT TO US, EVEN AS GENTILES.

I know that the prophecy here centers around Israel
And their return to the land.

But we love this for what it says about our Savior.

• Israel was stubborn and defiant and idolatrous and stiff-necked and rebellious and obstinate and sinful in every possible way.
• They rejected God in Isaiah’s day and when Christ came they rejected Him too.
• If there were ever a people who deserved to be totally abandoned by God it was Israel.

I know God made promises to them, but surely in light of their intense rebellion no one would blame God if He decided to renege on them right?

BUT THAT IS NOT OUR GOD.

And we are glad to hear it for if God was willing to totally abandon them, what is to say that He would not be justified in doing the same to us?

For we also are stubborn and defiant and idolatrous and stiff-necked
And rebellious and obstinate and sinful people.

But our security does not rest on our faithfulness, it rests on His.
And we rejoice in this Saving King
Who refuses to lose even one of His sheep.

Romans 11:28-32 “From the standpoint of the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but from the standpoint of God’s choice they are beloved for the sake of the fathers; for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. For just as you once were disobedient to God, but now have been shown mercy because of their disobedience, so these also now have been disobedient, that because of the mercy shown to you they also may now be shown mercy. For God has shut up all in disobedience so that He may show mercy to all.”

We serve a merciful God and we serve a faithful Saving King.

He will bring His people home.
• Not because they deserve it, but because He said He would.
• He paid for them, He bought them for a price, and He will have the reward of His suffering.

SOME DAY YOU WILL SEE
The greatest homecoming the world has ever known.

• It will not be ex-students coming to a football game…
• It will not be military personnel returning to their family…

The remnant of Israel, redeemed and returning to serve their King.

Our King will bring it about!

And the facts surrounding their return are the same for you.
It requires repentance and returning to the King.

Someday Jesus will return and reign upon this earth
And all those who are His will be gathered to Him
No matter where they are.

He will even raise those who are dead to come and be with Him.

If you would be part of that glorious homecoming
Then repent of your sin and return to Jesus Christ.

So much in life tells us that it is our performance that makes us who we are.  This especially true for kids.  Chore charts, report cards, standardized tests, recitals, and athletic banquets all give the overwhelming message that, “If you do well, you will be rewarded; if you do not do well, you will lose your reward, and you may even be punished.” Performance – work and reward – is one of the basic structures of our lives.  As a result, kids grow up thinking, “I am what I am because of what I do… or because of what I’ve failed to do.”

Have you ever thought about how different this message of performance is from the Bible’s message of redemption? In 1 Corinthians 15:10, Paul says, “By the grace of God I am what I am.” In the PROOF Pirates curriculum, kids will explore Ephesians and learn about how God saves scallywags like you and me.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
