The Oracle Concerning Babylon – part 4
Isaiah 13:1-14:26 (14:3-21)
July 2, 2023

On September 23, 1908 the Chicago Cubs and the New York Giants were in a heated race for the pennant and sitting even in the race. Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth with 2 outs and a man on first, the Giants rookie replacement first baseman Fred Merkle stepped to the plate (only playing because the starting first baseman had a sore back). Merkle singled, driving the winning run to 3rd base. Next at bat was short-stop Al Bridwell who also singled and drove home what should have been the winning run.
But in the excitement of the event, upon watching the runner from 3rd touch home, and watching the fans rush the field, Fred Merkle, thinking they had won the game, retreated to the dugout without ever touching second. The crowd had mauled the field, the players for both the Cubs and Giants were headed to the dugout all except for Cubs second baseman Johnny Evers who began frantically calling for the ball from the outfield. The ball came in but sailed over the head of Johnny Evers. By this time both teams began to figure out what was going on. One Giants player got possession of the ball and began running into the stands with it amidst the crowd, but it was eventually wrestled away from him. The Giants were also frantically trying to get Fred Merkle through the crowd and back to 2nd base. By the time he got there, Evers had the ball and was standing on second. The home plate umpire had never left the field and called Merkle out negating the go ahead run. National League President Harry Pulliam upheld the ruling and ruled the game a tie. The Giants lost the ensuing playoff game and the Cubs would go on to win the 1908 World Series.
The infamous play by the rookie became known as “The Merkle Boner”

1908 Baseball History

On October 25, 1964, after recovering a fumble against the 49ers in San Francisco, Minnesota Vikings star defensive end Jim Marshall ran 66 yards the wrong way into his own end zone. The four-year veteran believed he had scored a touchdown, and threw the ball out of bounds in celebration, resulting in a safety for San Francisco and putting an exclamation point on one of the worst gaffes in NFL history.
Thus the nickname “Wrong Way Marshall” would stick with him the rest of his career. Players even joked that Marshall should fly the plane home so the team would end up in Hawaii instead of Minnesota.

For 6 years the Boston Red Sox had owned the premiere player in all of baseball. George Herman Ruth was the league’s best hitter and pitcher and in a 6 year span led the Red Sox to 3 World Series victories. But on January 5, 1920, in order to fund his Broadway Musical “My Fair Lady” new Red Sox owner Harry Frazee sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees for the price of $125,000. Throughout the rest of the 20th century, the legacy of Frazee’s lopsided trade continued to hover over major league baseball, as the Yankees won 39 AL pennants and 26 World Series titles and the Red Sox went 86 years without a World Series win.
It became known as “The Curse of the Bambino” and Frazee’s mistake haunted the Red Sox for nearly a century.

I’m sure you could name others.
• Leon Lett making a blunder in the Super Bowl.
• Steve Bartmen, the Cubs fan who interfered with the foul ball.
• Bill Buckner, the Red Sox 1B who missed the routine grounder in the world series.
• Scott Norwood missing the game winning field goal in the super bowl wide right starting a string of 4 straight Buffalo Bill Super Bowl losses.

People who were good athletes, or good fans,
But history does not remember them for their successes,
Rather it remembers them for their glaring failure.

These people get labeled with a stigma that sticks with them forever
And in many ways their lives continue on in humiliation
For their glaring mistakes.

But none of them compare
To the eternal humiliation that awaits one.

There is one who will receive more humiliation and more ridicule
Than any other being that God ever created and that being is Satan.

• Though today he sits as “god of this world”
• Though today he holds the title of “prince of the power of the air”

There is coming a day when he will be the ultimate buffoon,
The chief of all fools, and the most humiliated.

And that reality is the one we look at this evening.

We are examining the first of Isaiah’s Oracles.
It is “The oracle concerning Babylon”

• We’ve already seen the first 6 points which I won’t rehash any more.
• All about God’s judgment on this wicked world
• And His redemption of His people.

But tonight the FOCUS of the oracle MOVES from Babylon in general
To the one who sits in control.

#7 THE RIDICULE
Isaiah 14:3-21

(3-4) “And it will be in the day when the LORD gives you rest from your pain and turmoil and harsh service in which you have been enslaved, that you will take up this taunt against the king of Babylon…”

Now, this is a verse that I can really get in to.
(Me and Lance Harris)

The only expectation for the people of God in this passage
Is the ability to taunt, ridicule, and make fun of…
I’ve been preparing my whole life for this one.

It is a coming “taunt against the king of Babylon”

But I would remind you again.
Babylon here is not the historical nation that conquered Jerusalem in 586BC it is the evil world system of Babylon.

And on that same note “the king of Babylon” is not here Nebuchadnezzar it is Satan, who is “the god of this world”.

I also don’t mind telling you that the statement I just made is a somewhat controversial one.

There are some who agree with me on that, and there are many who do not.

But I can show you exactly why I make this claim.

TURN TO: REVELATION 17:6-14

It was last Sunday morning when we looked at Revelation 17 as we identified who this Babylon really is.

We saw the harlot who rides the beast and how she influenced kings and was drunk on the blood of the saints.

We saw her.

But we didn’t get into the confusion that John seemed to have over her appearance.

(READ 6-7)

John said, “I wondered greatly”
And then an angel told John, “I will tell you the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has seven heads and ten horns.”

So John continues on to explain not just the woman, but more than that, the beast that carries her.

(READ 8)

What you see here is a “knock off Jesus”
Satan seeks to counterfeit Jesus and have his own would be savior.
And he counterfeits Him by staging a fake death and resurrection.

He was – alive
He is not – he died (or faked death)
And is about to come up – fake resurrection
And then he will go to destruction.

He is merely Satan’s deceptive puppet.

Revelation 13:3-4 “I saw one of his heads as if it had been slain, and his fatal wound was healed. And the whole earth was amazed and followed after the beast; they worshiped the dragon because he gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?”

But the mystery goes one.

(READ 9-11)

The reference here is to the power behind all the world powers in history.

Paul reminded us:
Ephesians 6:12 “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

That is true.
And here there is a reference to the kingdoms in Scripture which have afflicted Israel.

“five have fallen” – Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Media/Persia, Greece
“one is” – Rome
“the other has not yet come” – kingdom of anti-christ

The point here is this.

When you saw Pharaoh seeking to destroy all the Hebrew boys by drowning them in the Nile, that was Satan behind that.

When you saw Sennacharib seeking to wipe out Israel and Judah, that was Satan behind that.

When you saw Nebuchadnezzar seeking to destroy Jerusalem, that was Satan behind that.

When Mordecai tried to annihilate all the Jews in Persia, that was Satan behind that.

When Antiochus Epiphanes of Greece tried to kill the Jews, that was Satan behind that.

When Titus of Rome destroyed Jerusalem that was Satan behind that.

You see different figureheads, but they all come from the same beast.

It has all been Satan.
He is the promoter of the evil world system.
He has been behind it all.

And there are coming more in the end.
(READ 12-14)

But the point is that here in Isaiah we are looking at “this taunt against the king of Babylon”

But we’re not talking about the figurehead here.
We’re talking about the real king of Babylon.
We’re talking about the real “god of this world”

And this is that taunt.

Let’s break this down a little bit further here tonight just to help you see the scope of this taunt.

First let’s ask who is doing the taunting?
There are three groups and they are identified in verses 4-11

1) SAINTS ARE TAUNTING HIM (4-7)

(4-7) “that YOU will take up this taunt against the king of Babylon, and say, “How the oppressor has ceased, And how fury has ceased! “The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, The scepter of rulers Which used to strike the peoples in fury with unceasing strokes, Which subdued the nations in anger with unrestrained persecution. “The whole earth is at rest and is quiet; They break forth into shouts of joy.”

The first group you see taunting is those who were redeemed in verses 1 and 2.
They are the saved.
They are those under God’s compassion.
They are the chosen.

This is our taunt.
This is our mock.

We sing, “How the oppressor has ceased, And how fury has ceased!”

We sing of his cruel reign now being over.

I’m reminded of the man who went to the White House back in 2016 and asked to see President Hillary Clinton. The man at the gate said, “Hillary Clinton didn’t win the presidency.” The man said, “Oh, ok, thank you” and left.
The next day he returned and again asked to see “President Hillary Clinton” to which he was again remined that Hillary Clinton lost the election.
The man continued going back for 6 straight days and asking the same question, each time receiving the same response.
On the 7th day the security guard was a little fed up and snapped back, “You’ve been coming here now for a week asking me every day to see President Hillary Clinton. I’ve told you repeatedly Hillary Clint lost the election!” To which the man responded, “I know, I just like to hear you say it.”

That is the taunt here.
It’s over, he’s gone, no more threat!

(5-6) “The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, The scepter of rulers Which used to strike the peoples in fury with unceasing strokes, Which subdued the nations in anger with unrestrained persecution.”

Even in Job we learned how Satan “roamed about on the earth and walked around on it.”

But not anymore.
He has been captured, chained, and thrown into the abyss for 1,000 years.

The days of his torment are over.

(7) “The whole earth is at rest and is quiet; they break forth into shouts of joy.”

That is our taunt!
We’ll have international “Satan is in prison” day and we’ll celebrate it every day!

We’ll sing an shout and taunt and rejoice that the serpent in the garden finally got what he deserved.

The old terrorist is caught…
The serial killer is captured…
The tyrant has been jailed…

And the saints will sing and rejoice!

But we aren’t the only ones singing and taunting.

2) SHRUBS ARE TAUNTING HIM (8)

(8) “Even the cypress trees rejoice over you, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, ‘Since you were laid low, no tree cutter comes up against us.’”

Isaiah 55:12 “For you will go out with joy And be led forth with peace; The mountains and the hills will break forth into shouts of joy before you, And all the trees of the field will clap their hands.”

Romans 8:19-22 “For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now.”

Creation remembers life before the fall.
Creation remember what it was like before that usurper entered the garden and wrecked everything.

And so when he is gone and the curse is reversed even the “cypress trees rejoice over you, and the cedars of Lebanon”

All of creation will rejoice.

And still that is not all.
3) SHEOL IS TAUNTING HIM (9-11)

(9-11) “Sheol from beneath is excited over you to meet you when you come; It arouses for you the spirits of the dead, all the leaders of the earth; It raises all the kings of the nations from their thrones. “They will all respond and say to you, ‘Even you have been made weak as we, You have become like us. ‘Your pomp and the music of your harps Have been brought down to Sheol; Maggots are spread out as your bed beneath you And worms are your covering.’”

What a moment this will be.
On that day when Satan is bound in the Sheol and placed in that prison.

All “the spirits” that were put there ahead of him.
Those who were bound in the days of Noah.
Those who begged Jesus not to put them there.
Those Jesus made proclamation to after His death.

“All the leaders of the earth”
Those who followed his lead
Those who did his bidding for him
Those who carried out his evil schemes

All the kings all the demons all the rulers who did what he commanded and ended up in prison because of it.

(10-11) “They will all respond and say to you, ‘Even you have been made weak as we, you have become like us. Your pomp and the music of your harps have been brought down to Sheol; Maggots are spread out as your bed beneath you and worms are your covering.”

They all mock him.
They point out how he’s just a nobody like them now.

They offer him a maggot bed to sleep on.
They offer him a quilt of worms to cover up with.

And they mock him for being just like them.

He is the ultimate buffoon, mocked and maligned and taunted by all.

We read of Jesus:
Philippians 2:10-11 “so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

And just the opposite is true for Satan.

“every individual will rise, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue will mock that you have become as weak as we are.”

He is “The Satan Boner”
He is “Wrong Way Satan”
He is mocked forever by everyone.

Those are the mockers.

But it’s not just momentary, let’s next take a look at the song they sing about him.

The objective is to rub salt in the wound.
It is to take his biggest blunders, put them on the jumbo-tron and relive it over and over.

One of the best pro sporting events to attend was during the stretch of 2012-2016 was any time the Chicago White Sox came to Texas to play the Texas Rangers.

During those 5 seasons the manager of the White Sox was Robin Ventura and the Texas Rangers welcomed him every night by playing on the jumbo-tron the video of the night when Robin Ventura charged the mound against Nolan Ryan, and Ryan punched him 7 times in the face.

It was the most humiliating moment in Ventura’s pro career and Ranger fans loved to watch it over and over.

And it was even better watching it knowing that Ventura was in the dugout.

The same will happen to Satan.
He will be mocked for eternity.

Psalms 2:1-4 “Why are the nations in an uproar And the peoples devising a vain thing? The kings of the earth take their stand And the rulers take counsel together Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, “Let us tear their fetters apart And cast away their cords from us!” He who sits in the heavens laughs, The Lord scoffs at them.”

Psalms 37:12-13 “The wicked plots against the righteous And gnashes at him with his teeth. The Lord laughs at him, For He sees his day is coming.”

Psalms 59:6-8 “They return at evening, they howl like a dog, And go around the city. Behold, they belch forth with their mouth; Swords are in their lips, For, they say, “Who hears?” But You, O LORD, laugh at them; You scoff at all the nations.”

Let’s take a look at the actual song or taunt that will be played on continuous loop for him.

It covers his 5 biggest blunders.

1) HIS FALL FROM HEAVEN (12)

“How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations!”

Remember that time you were in heaven but then you got kicked out because you thought you could overthrow God?

Do you remember that?

Remember where you used to live? In heaven
But now you live in Sheol…that’s crazy huh?

So you used to be a pretty big deal. You were the “star of the morning”, you were the “son of the dawn”.

Wow, what happened? Did you make God mad or something?
“You have been cut down to the earth”

It’s the type of blunder you’re not likely to forget.

Pete Rose kicked out baseball for gambling.
The same for Shoeless Joe Jackson and 7 other members of the White Sox.
Richard Nixon having to resign the presidency.

And for all eternity Satan will be mocked about the fact that he was kicked out of heaven.

TURN TO: EZEKIEL 28:11-19

What a fall he has endured, and we will sing of it for eternity.

2) HIS FOOLISH BOAST (13-14)

“But you said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north. ‘I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’”

No sooner is his fall pointed out than does the song move to his boast.

What are you doing here in Sheol?

I thought you were going to “ascend to heaven”?
I thought you were going to “raise your throne above the stars of God”?
I thought you were going to “make yourself like the Most High”?

You’ve probably seen the movie “Secretariat” about the great race horse.

It is a fun scene as the owners of Secretariat and the owners of his rival Sham sit at the press conference before the Bellmont.

The owner of Sham, having lost to Secretariat at the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness saying, “Let me tell you something about all this talk about superhorse. Sham broke the derby record too. He ran the second fastest derby, he ran the second fastest Preakness…ever. By the time this is over you’ll be calling Sham the superhorse.”

You know the conversation was fun after Sham lost to Secretariat by 32 lengths.

Oh look, it’s superhorse!

Can’t you hear all those rulers now sharing a cell in Sheol asking Satan, “I thought you were gonna be god by now?”

On the cross Jesus took all sorts of mocking and scoffing.
“If you are the Son of God, save yourself…”
“Come down from the cross” and we will believe in You…

Satan will receive the same, only unlike Christ, he won’t be able to do anything about it.

Let Satan where the crown of thorns and that purple robe.
Let Satan prophesy who punched him in the face.

His pompous boasting about ascending to the throne of God…he missed it terribly!

And for all eternity he’ll be reminded of his foolish boast.

3) HIS FAILED MISSION (15-17)

“Nevertheless you will be thrust down to Sheol, To the recesses of the pit. “Those who see you will gaze at you, They will ponder over you, saying, ‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble, Who shook kingdoms, Who made the world like a wilderness And overthrew its cities, Who did not allow his prisoners to go home?’”

I really like this one.
All his grand schemes, all his grand plans.

We hear him pompously offering Jesus the world if Jesus would just bow down and worship him.

All the mighty things he thought he was accomplishing while at work on the earth.

How he “made the earth tremble”
How he “shook kingdoms”
How he “made the world like a wilderness”
How he “overthrew cities”
How he “did not allow his prisoners to go home”

And the only question now is, “Is this the man…?”

It’s like the throw him in the cell and his cell mate says, “Huh, I thought you’d be taller.”

All of a sudden it is sinking in that every victory Satan every won was only because God allowed him to win it.

He only shook the kingdoms that God wanted shook.
He only overthrew the cities that God wanted overthrown.
He only kept prisoners that God had not freed.

God used every single diabolical thing he ever did for His own good.

Even Satan’s crowning achievement of crucifying the Son of God turned out to be the blunder of eternity on his part.

He just didn’t end up being as impressive as we all thought.

And now, without God allowing him to run free and wreak havoc on the nations, he sure doesn’t command much respect.

His mission has failed.
And he is in prison.

4) HIS FLEETING GLORY (18-20a)

“All the kings of the nations lie in glory, Each in his own tomb. “But you have been cast out of your tomb Like a rejected branch, Clothed with the slain who are pierced with a sword, Who go down to the stones of the pit Like a trampled corpse. “You will not be united with them in burial, Because you have ruined your country, You have slain your people.”

My what respect he garnered.
My what fear he once had.

We were warned about him.
We were told to resist him.
We were told not to listen to him.

He was dangerous and a threat.

But upon his fall there was no statue erected to speak of this honored adversary.

Jesus didn’t use His tomb but Satan doesn’t even get one.
“you have been cast out of your tomb like a rejected branch”

Nothing for him but a mass grave, “clothed with the slain who are pierced with a sword”

“like a trampled corpse”

He sure fell short of the glory he thought he would obtain.
No value at all in him.
No honor for him at all in death.

“You have slain your people”

What an epitaph…
What a eulogy…

We think of the man in Hades who is begging Abraham to send Lazarus to dip his finger in water.

When that is not possible he begs that Lazarus be sent to warn his brothers.

And I think of fathers in hell.
I think of men who rejected Christ and who refused to submit.
I think of men who neglected to teach their kids the gospel.
I think of men who instead modeled every worldly behavior for their sons.

And I think what it will feel like the moment they look to their left in hell to see their son joining them in torment only to realize that they bear the responsibility for it.

“You killed your son”
“You condemned him to hell”

And Satan has done that for every single person who ever followed him.

The pinnacle child in this example must be Judas.

If there was ever a man who might have earned a “Well done good and faithful servant” from Satan it should’ve been Judas.

And yet Judas ended up hanging himself and going to his own place.

I wonder what Judas would like to say to Satan on this day?
I can promise you he want give him any glory.
I can promise you that Judas is done following Satan’s agenda.

Do you honor a general who loses every battle and causes the death of every man under his command?

Do you build a statue for such a one as that?
Do you put his face on money?
Do you put him in a tomb?

No, you strip him of glory forever.

How many statues do you see of General Custer today?
And he will have far more glory than Satan.

5) HIS FALLEN SONS (20b-21)

“May the offspring of evildoers not be mentioned forever. “Prepare for his sons a place of slaughter Because of the iniquity of their fathers. They must not arise and take possession of the earth And fill the face of the world with cities.”

And not only will they mock Satan for all his failures, but they will make sure and point out that no one arose in his place to finish his fight for him.

They did not succeed.
They did not take possession of the earth.

I recently watched the movie “Glory” about the first black regiment in the Civil War to see battle.

The 54th division volunteered to be the first to charge Ft. Wagner in the Civil War. After seeing most of their men and their leader die in the sand the movie ends with this footnote: “The fort was never taken”.

Now you can obviously make all sorts of moral victories out of what those men did and what it ended up accomplishing, which is what the movie is doing.

But from a tactical standpoint, it was pointless.

And this is where Satan will dwell for all eternity.
He lost
He died in the charge
And no one carried on for him
The fort was never taken

Revelation 20:10 “And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”

There will be no glory…at all.
Only ridicule forever.

And this is the reality of “the day of the LORD”

It will be a total annihilation by God on all sinners including the one who seduced them.

He will die with his men in utter humiliation and disgrace.
God will totally and thoroughly win the day.

And again the point.
The world is passing away.

Don’t be discouraged.
Don’t be deceived.
Stand firm, trust God, we win in the end!

The Oracle Concerning Babylon – Part 3
Isaiah 13:1-14:26 (14:1-2)
July 2, 2023

As you know we are now in the segment of the book of Isaiah called
“The Oracles”

• These are the burdens which God is promising to lay upon the back of the nations that have afflicted, are afflicting, and will afflict Israel.

It is a segment meant to encourage Israel that
They should not fear their enemies
And they should not trust in anyone but God.

The LORD alone is our salvation and He alone should be trusted.

THUS FAR all we have looked at is the first oracle which is called “The oracle concerning Babylon”

• But as we have said this first reference to Babylon is not simply the historical
Babylon which destroyed Jerusalem in 586 BC.
• Babylon here is a reference to the entire evil world system which is illustrated
by Babylon.
• This is the world, not just a single nation.

So the first of Isaiah’s oracles are a reminder to God’s people
That God will one day judge the entire evil world system.

The Bible refers to that day as, “The Day of the LORD”

Isaiah 13:6 “Wail, for the day of the LORD is near! It will come as destruction from the Almighty.”

Isaiah 13:9 “Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, Cruel, with fury and burning anger, To make the land a desolation; And He will exterminate its sinners from it.”

Isaiah 13:13 “Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, And the earth will be shaken from its place At the fury of the LORD of hosts In the day of His burning anger.”

• It is the day of God’s judgment upon sinners.
• It is the day of God’s wrath and burning anger.
• It is a terrible day.

AND IT IS COMING.

Isaiah 13:11 “Thus I will punish the world for its evil And the wicked for their iniquity; I will also put an end to the arrogance of the proud And abase the haughtiness of the ruthless.”

God will come and deal with sinners.
In fact Isaiah said He will “exterminate” them from earth.

It is a cruel and terrible day of God’s wrath.

And we spent a couple of services together
Examining the horror of that day.

In fact we’ve already seen the first 5 points to the sermon.

#1 THE RECRUITMENT
Isaiah 13:1-5

Where God recruits an army to come and (3) “execute My anger”

#2 THE RESPONSE
Isaiah 13:6-8

This is the response of sinners and we read that (7) “all hands will fall limp, and every man’s heart will melt.”

#3 THE REASON
Isaiah 13:9-11

Very simply this day is coming (9) “to make the land a desolation”

God says, (11) “Thus I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their iniquity;”

God is coming to punish sinners for their rebellion against Him.

#4 THE RESULT
Isaiah 13:12-16

It is as terrible as you can imagine.
(16) “Their little ones also will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be plundered and their wives ravished.”

It is a day of terrible judgment from God.

#5 THE REALITY
Isaiah 13:17-22

Very simply that (19) “Babylon, the beauty of kingdoms, the glory of the Chaldean’s pride, will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.”

God is going to put a definite and thorough and terrible end
To this world and the sin which exists within it.

It is “The Day of the LORD”

But now we move into chapter 14 and we ask the question:
BUT WHAT ABOUT BELIEVERS?

• What will this day spell for those who have repented of their sin?
• What will this day spell for those who have trusted in Christ?
• What will this day spell for those who have forsaken this evil world system?

And for that we come to point number 6.

#6 THE REDEMPTION
Isaiah 14:1-2

What you see here with even a quick reading is that
The fate for God’s people does not match the fate of the wicked.

Whereas God is seen JUDGING the world,
Here we read of God having “compassion on Jacob”

Where we see God REJECTING sinners,
Here we read that God will “again choose Israel”

IT IS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT FATE.

IN FACT, we have even learned that
What God is doing to the sinners of the world,
He is actually doing it FOR the benefit of His people.

Revelation 18 describes the fall of Babylon, and we learn why.
Revelation 18:20 “Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you saints and apostles and prophets, because God has pronounced judgment for you against her.”

That is why you see all of God’s redeemed
Singing that “Hallelujah Chorus” in Revelation 19,
Rejoicing as they see the smoke of her burning ascending to heaven.

We have the glorious promise of Isaiah:
Isaiah 35:3-4 “Encourage the exhausted, and strengthen the feeble. Say to those with anxious heart, “Take courage, fear not. Behold, your God will come with vengeance; The recompense of God will come, But He will save you.”

And in a very simple sense, if you see nothing else,
We must learn that the day of the LORD
Is NOT a judgment on the redeemed.

Romans 8:1 “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

On the cross Jesus Christ already bore the wrath for our sin.

Zephaniah told us about “the Day of the LORD”
He described it as:

Zephaniah 1:15 “A day of wrath is that day, A day of trouble and distress, A day of destruction and desolation, A day of darkness and gloom, A day of clouds and thick darkness,”

Joel saw this as well:
Joel 2:2 “A day of darkness and gloom, A day of clouds and thick darkness. As the dawn is spread over the mountains, So there is a great and mighty people; There has never been anything like it, Nor will there be again after it To the years of many generations.”

And that is EXACTLY what we see occurring
As Jesus hanged upon the cross.
Matthew 27:45-46 “Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour. About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?” that is, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?”

WE HAVE ALSO SINNED…
• Like the world we have also rebelled against God…
• And we also deserve the full fury of the wrath of God to be poured out upon our lives.

But Jesus Christ came and bore that wrath for us.
He bore that wrath for the redeemed.

If you are in Christ, all the fury and rage and judgment
Which has been laid against your account
Was received by Christ on the cross
And now there is no more condemnation.

The world still abides under God’s anger.
The world still has a debt to settle.

But for the redeemed, the “day of the LORD” is NOT a day of judgment,
It is a DAY OF SALVATION.

It is a day of “compassion” on God’s people.
And what God will do to this world He will do FOR YOU.

And Isaiah speaks of that, EVEN TO ISRAEL.
Israel, for all her flaws, and all her mistakes,
Is still the people whom God has graciously chosen.

• He selected her first through Abraham.
• He selected her officially at Sinai where He entered into covenant with them.

BUT WE KNOW THEIR STORY.
• It is one of rebellion and treachery and disobedience,
• Culminating in the rejection and crucifixion of His Son.

Because of their rebellion, Paul says in Romans 11,
That Israel was broken off and Gentiles were grafted in.

And Israel AT THIS TIME dwells as a REJECTED PEOPLE.
• There certainly remains a remnant, as there is always a remnant,
• But by in large today Israel is cut off from a relationship with God for they have rejected the Messiah.

BUT HERE Isaiah speaks of the day “when the LORD will have compassion on Jacob and again choose Israel.”

Paul speaks of this as well.
Romans 11:23-29 “And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree? For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery—so that you will not be wise in your own estimation—that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in; and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, “THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB.” “THIS IS MY COVENANT WITH THEM, WHEN I TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS.” From the standpoint of the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but from the standpoint of God’s choice they are beloved for the sake of the fathers; for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.”

Call it Israel’s re-election if you want.
God will “again choose Israel”

And though there aren’t many details given here in Isaiah 14
WE HAVE SEEN IT in several places throughout the Bible.

The most famous would have to be Zechariah 12
Zechariah 12:10-13:1 “I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn. “In that day there will be great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the plain of Megiddo. “The land will mourn, every family by itself; the family of the house of David by itself and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Levi by itself and their wives by themselves; the family of the Shimeites by itself and their wives by themselves; all the families that remain, every family by itself and their wives by themselves. “In that day a fountain will be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for impurity.”

That is the very definition of God again choosing Israel.
• It is God who pours out of a spirit of repentance upon them.
• It is God who causes them to call on Jesus.
• It is God who opens the fountain of forgiveness and applies it to their account.

God will redeem them.
They will be His people.

That is His “compassion”
That is Him again choosing Israel.

God will judge the world, but He will save Israel.

“and settle them in their own land”

He will save them and He will bring them home.

This is another graphic picture of redemption.

You know that we are talking about
Babylon as a symbol of the evil world system.

This is another area where historical Babylon makes a perfect analogy.
• For in 586 BC Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Jerusalem and burned the temple
and carried away captives back to Babylon.
• They would stay in Babylon for 70 years
• Then God would bring them home.

At the end of the 70 years you get commands like:

Jeremiah 50:8 “Wander away from the midst of Babylon And go forth from the land of the Chaldeans; Be also like male goats at the head of the flock.”

Jeremiah 51:6 “Flee from the midst of Babylon, And each of you save his life! Do not be destroyed in her punishment, For this is the LORD’S time of vengeance; He is going to render recompense to her.”

Jeremiah 51:45 “Come forth from her midst, My people, And each of you save yourselves From the fierce anger of the LORD.”

God’s people were told to leave Babylon and come back home.
They were told to escape the place which God would judge.

That was certainly a historical reality,
But more than that it was symbolic
Of the call to God’s people in every generation.

As we are commanded
• Not to love this world.
• To not be conformed to the pattern of this world.

All believers are in a sense called to flee Babylon.

Well, Israel has yet to do that,
But there is coming a day when God will have such compassion on her that she will.

She will flee the world and she will return home.
That is to say; SHE WILL RETURN TO GOD.

God will “settle them in their own land”

And at that point, “strangers will join them and attach themselves to the house of Jacob.”

This is a reference certainly to Gentiles who have been grafted in
And who will be sharers in Israel’s inheritance.

We are talking now about all of the redeemed for all time.
Gathered to the LORD.

Isaiah 56:6-8 “Also the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, To minister to Him, and to love the name of the LORD, To be His servants, every one who keeps from profaning the sabbath And holds fast My covenant; Even those I will bring to My holy mountain And make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be acceptable on My altar; For My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples.” The Lord GOD, who gathers the dispersed of Israel, declares, “Yet others I will gather to them, to those already gathered.”

(2) “The peoples will take them along and bring them to their place, and the house of Israel will possess them as an inheritance in the land of the LORD as male servants and female servants; and they will take their captors captive and will rule over their oppressors.”

In the day of God’s judgment…
In the day when God pours fury on the earth…

Not only will God save His people and draw them to Himself,
But He will cause them to rule and to reign with Him.

Isaiah 60:10-14 “Foreigners will build up your walls, And their kings will minister to you; For in My wrath I struck you, And in My favor I have had compassion on you. “Your gates will be open continually; They will not be closed day or night, So that men may bring to you the wealth of the nations, With their kings led in procession. “For the nation and the kingdom which will not serve you will perish, And the nations will be utterly ruined. “The glory of Lebanon will come to you, The juniper, the box tree and the cypress together, To beautify the place of My sanctuary; And I shall make the place of My feet glorious. “The sons of those who afflicted you will come bowing to you, And all those who despised you will bow themselves at the soles of your feet; And they will call you the city of the LORD, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.”

Isaiah 61:4-7 “Then they will rebuild the ancient ruins, They will raise up the former devastations; And they will repair the ruined cities, The desolations of many generations. Strangers will stand and pasture your flocks, And foreigners will be your farmers and your vinedressers. But you will be called the priests of the LORD; You will be spoken of as ministers of our God. You will eat the wealth of nations, And in their riches you will boast. Instead of your shame you will have a double portion, And instead of humiliation they will shout for joy over their portion. Therefore they will possess a double portion in their land, Everlasting joy will be theirs.”

AND THE MAIN POINT
That I would have you glean from all of these prophetic passages
Is that the plan of God for His children
Is nothing like the plan He has for the world.

• God will judge this world with fire.
• God will exterminate sinners.
• God will terrify them in His wrath and crush them in His fury.

BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT HE WILL DO TO HIS OWN.

For those who have trusted in Christ…
For those whose sins have been atoned for…

They will be objects of compassion.
They will be objects of salvation.
They will rule and reign with Christ.

For the redeemed the day of the Lord is not a day to fear,
But a day to anticipate.

• That is why Peter told us to “look forward to and hasten” the day of God.
• That is why Paul said that Christians are those “who love His appearing”
• That is why John could receive the Revelation and yet at the end say, “Amen, come Lord Jesus”

The day of judgment on sinners is a day of salvation for the redeemed.

RIGHT NOW, the redeemed are outcasts & refugees; strangers & aliens.
We are in this world but we are not of this world.

Philippians 3:20-21 “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.”

But because of this we are currently maligned
And persecuted and hated by the world.

Psalms 44:22 “But for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

(Paul affirmed that very verse in Romans 8:36)

BUT IT WON’T ALWAYS BE THAT WAY.
There is coming a day
• When God will differentiate between the redeemed and the wicked.
• When God will reveal those who are His and those who are not.
• When God will come in judgment, but He will save His own.

Paul encouraged the Colossians:
Colossians 3:1-4 “Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.”

Paul said that “you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God”

That word “hidden” is KRUPTO
It is where we get our word “cryptic”

The world can’t see it. Your glory is not evident.
God’s favor is not clearly seen, it is hidden.
It is hidden in Christ whom they also do not see.

But on the day that Christ is revealed in full glory.
On that day God will make your glory evident as well.

Matthew 24:40-41 “Then there will be two men in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. “Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one will be left.”

Matthew 13:41-43 “The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. “Then THE RIGHTEOUS WILL SHINE FORTH AS THE SUN in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.”

Matthew 13:47-50 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea, and gathering fish of every kind; and when it was filled, they drew it up on the beach; and they sat down and gathered the good fish into containers, but the bad they threw away. “So it will be at the end of the age; the angels will come forth and take out the wicked from among the righteous, and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Matthew 25:31-34, 41 “All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left. “Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world…Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;”

DO YOU SEE that there is coming a day of wrath,
But it for God’s children it is not a day of wrath,
It is a day of redemption?

It will be destruction for sinners, but it will be salvation for the redeemed.

God’s people should not fear this day, they should anticipate it.

In fact, as we will see tonight:
(14:3-4) “And it will be in the day when the LORD gives you rest from your pain and turmoil and harsh service in which you have been enslaved, that you will take up this taunt against the king of Babylon…”

• It won’t be a day of grieving…
• It won’t be a day of suffering…

• It will be a day of rejoicing…
• It will even be a day of taunting…

If you are NOT in Christ, you should absolutely fear this day,
But if you ARE in Christ, this is a day to be anticipated.

AND THAT IS ISAIAH’S MESSAGE.

NOW REMEMBER, the foreign nations never heard these messages.
THESE WERE FOR THE CHURCH.

And the message is that
The church should trust God and rejoice.

Now I want us to finish up this morning by looking at this same message given to the Gentile church in the New Testament.

TURN TO: 2 Thessalonians 2

If you are not familiar with the Thessalonians or this letter
• Then you need to know is that the church in Thessalonica was a young and relatively new church.
• And you need to know that from day 1 they endured extensive persecution for trusting in Christ.

The city of Thessalonica was in the region of Macedonia (Philippi).
• The Jews in that city were noted as men who were not very “noble minded”
• When Paul preached Jesus there was a lot of opposition.

1 Thessalonians 2:1-2 “For you yourselves know, brethren, that our coming to you was not in vain, but after we had already suffered and been mistreated in Philippi, as you know, we had the boldness in our God to speak to you the gospel of God amid much opposition.”

And soon after, Paul had to flee to Berea.

Acts 17:13-14 “But when the Jews of Thessalonica found out that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul in Berea also, they came there as well, agitating and stirring up the crowds. Then immediately the brethren sent Paul out to go as far as the sea; and Silas and Timothy remained there.”

IN SHORT, the Jews of Thessalonica
Were bent on stomping out Christianity.
It was a hard city to be a new Christian in.

1 Thessalonians 1:6 “You also became imitators of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much tribulation with the joy of the Holy Spirit,”

So what message do you preach to a body of believers
Who feel rejected and hated in the world?

You tell them about “the day of the LORD”

And that’s exactly what Paul did.
He sought to encourage them
• That this persecution was temporary
• A day is coming when God will deliver His people and judge the wicked.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-3 “Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. While they are saying, “Peace and safety!” then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape.”

Paul would go on to say:
1 Thessalonians 5:9-11 “For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.”

So you get a basic understanding of WHO this church was
And WHY Paul had seen fit to teach them about the day of the LORD.

HOWEVER, by the time we get to the second letter
We find that A GREAT DECEPTION HAD OCCURRED.

And instead of anticipating the day of the Lord,
The Thessalonians had come to dread it.

(READ: 2 THESS 2:1-2)

Someone, pretending to be Paul, had written a letter, claiming a vision that “the day of the Lord has come”

• Someone had claimed to be Paul
• And told the Thessalonians that the explanation for all their persecution
• Was that they had missed the rapture
• And were now under God’s wrath.
• What they were experiencing was the day of the Lord judgment.

And here we have believers who are terrified of the day of the Lord.
And this is NOT the intention of God.

So Paul writes to set the record straight.
I think the information will encourage you as well.

(READ 3-5)

• You do feel a hint of rebuke from Paul there
• That the Thessalonians had seemed to have forgotten all that Paul had taught them about that coming day.

Namely Paul had obviously taught them a great deal
About the coming Anti-Christ.

• This man who “takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.”
• That event is what Daniel and Jesus referred to as “The Abomination of Desolation”

And Paul had taught them that this event comes first.

In other words, before God’s wrath will fall on this world,
God will first allow the Anti-Christ to enter the world stage
In full blasphemous aggression.

And if the Thessalonians had studied Daniel or listened to Paul
They should know this, but it is true none the less.

WHAT IS ALSO TRUE is that this Anti-Christ has not yet appeared

AND THERE IS A REASON.
(READ 6-7)

• The reason he has not appeared is because God has restrained him.
• Certainly this restrainer is none other than the Holy Spirit.

Many men would have gladly filled this role of Satan’s puppet over the course of history.
• Pharaoh would have
• Sennacharib would have
• Nebuchadnezzar would have
• Herod would have
• Hitler would have
• Stalin would have

But none of those men were permitted to reach such levels,
There was a restrainer in place.

But one day the restraint will be removed
And Satan’s puppet will emerge blasphemous and arrogant.

(READ 8-12)

• He will come in full arrogance and lawlessness and he will deceive many.

IN FACT, this is why God will allow him to come to power.
This world is filled with men who refused to love the truth of God.
Having rejected what is true God will give them the ultimate deceiver.

He will be used of God to secure men in judgment.

(11-12)

• And that is part of this “Day of the LORD” that we’ve been studying.

BUT AGAIN, THAT IS NOT THE FATE OF THE CHURCH.
That is the world’s fate.

(READ 13-15)

The church has a different fate.
• We are “beloved by the Lord”
• We have been “chosen” by God “for salvation”
• We have been “called…through the gospel”
• “that [we] may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ”

This day is a day of doom for the world
But it is a day of glory for the church.

AND THE FINAL ENCOURAGEMENT?

(15) “So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us.”

When the church studies about the day of the Lord
It should not move them to fear,
It should motivate conviction and endurance.

When we read about the coming judgment of sinners
It does not cause us to lose heart, it causes us to press on.

We understand the end…
We see the coming victory…

THIS IS THE CALLING FOR THE CHURCH.
God has redeemed us and saved us and destined us for glory,
DON’T QUIT NOW!

• You live in a corrupt world.
• You live in Babylon.
• It is defiling and deceptive and seeks to destroy you.

BUT DON’T GIVE IN.
DON’T COMPROMISE.
DON’T YIELD.

“stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught”

• Don’t embrace their thinking
• Don’t follow their lifestyle
• Don’t fall for their logic and advice
• Don’t buy their theory of evolution
• Don’t buy their critical race theory
• Don’t buy their LGBTQ agenda
• Don’t fall for their peer pressure.
• Don’t yield to their pluralism.
• Don’t conform to their moral code.

GOD WILL ONE DAY JUDGE THEM FOR THOSE THINGS.

You stand firm
The day of victory is coming.

The Oracle Concerning Babylon – Part 2 (Isaiah 13:1-14:26 (13:9-26))

The Oracle Concerning Babylon – Part 2
Isaiah 13:1-14:26 (13:9-26)
June 25, 2023

We want to jump back in to this first oracle tonight.

It is stated as “the oracle concerning Babylon” but you are aware now
That we are talking about the global world system.

Babylon is a reference to that system and Isaiah begins his oracles
Talking about God’s promise to destroy it.

We saw:
#1 THE RECRUITMENT
Isaiah 13:1-5

As God called for a mighty army to come “to execute My anger”.
• God is angry at sin.
• God is angry at sinners.
• He patiently endures them now, but He won’t forever.

The day of His wrath is coming and here
He recruits the army who will bring that wrath to the earth.

#2 THE RESPONSE
Isaiah 13:6-8

This is the response of sinners, not the response of the redeemed.
The response of the redeemed comes in chapter 14.

Very simply God expects sinners to “wail” to “be terrified” to “writhe in pain” to “look at one another in astonishment”

• He isn’t looking for them to repent.
• He isn’t looking for them to change.
• He is looking for them to be judged.

The time of salvation is over.

And we started looking at the third point this morning.
#3 THE REASON
Isaiah 13:9-11

We asked the question: WHY THE DAY OF THE LORD?
Why is God so angry?

And we simply read:
(9) “Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, Cruel, with fury and burning anger, To make the land a desolation; And He will exterminate its sinners from it.”
God is coming to exterminate sinners.

And the analogy of an exterminator is a pretty intense analogy.

Once a year Carrie will call Terminex to come to our house and spray for spiders and ants and those nasty water beetles that like to invade.

When the Terminex man arrives and asks what she wants, SHE DOESN’T SAY,
• “Well, I’d like to see if we can’t have a discussion with the ants and see if they’ll
stay off the counter.”
• “I want the spiders to be more courteous to us”
• “I’m seeking to live in peace with the water beetles.”

No, when the Terminex guy comes Carrie only wants him to come
For one reason; extreme, severe, and thorough judgment.

And Isaiah says that God will do the same thing to this world.

WHY?
BECAUSE THEY ARE SINNERS.

Let us never forget the chief threat and dangers of sin.
• Sing brings death.
• God kills sinners.
• God told Adam that if he ate from that tree he would surely die.

Genesis 5:5 “So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died.”

• In Noah’s day God killed sinners with the flood.
• In Abraham’s day God killed sinners with fire and brimstone from heaven.
• In Moses’ day God killed sinners with plagues and by drowning them in the Red Sea
• In Joshua’s day God killed sinners with the sword of the Israelites.

It was promised at the beginning and it is seen repeatedly,
God kills sinners.

Romans 5:12 “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned”

You say, “Well I sinned, and I didn’t die.”
• Adam didn’t die immediately either.
• God graciously gave Adam time to repent.

Humanity is in that cycle as well.
God is patiently awaiting repentance.
“Today”, Paul told us, “is the day of salvation”.

But that day will soon end and the day of the LORD will come.
And on that day “He will exterminate” sinners.
And Isaiah goes on:

(10-11) “For the stars of heaven and their constellations Will not flash forth their light; The sun will be dark when it rises And the moon will not shed its light. Thus I will punish the world for its evil And the wicked for their iniquity; I will also put an end to the arrogance of the proud And abase the haughtiness of the ruthless.”

In a moment, God will turn out the lights and He will kill sinners.

(11) “I will punish the world for its evil And the wicked for their iniquity; I will also put an end to the arrogance of the proud And abase the haughtiness of the ruthless.”

• “evil”
• “wicked”
• “iniquity”
• “arrogance”
• “proud”
• “haughtiness”
• “ruthless”

God will put an end to them all.
Judgment will fall on sin.

How gracious was God to Adam in the garden.
That Adam did not instantly die.
• God clothed him in animal skins as a form of atonement.
• God allowed him the blessing of children.
• God allowed him to keep his wife.
• And Adam’s death was actually postponed a good many years.

And God shows similar grace and patience to sinners today.
• Enduring their scoffing and their disobedience
• And not immediately crushing them as they deserve.

But that day of patience won’t last forever.
His day is coming and on that day He “will punish the world for its evil And the wicked for their iniquity.”

THE FOOLISHNESS OF MAN is that
They don’t take advantage of the patience of God.

Paul wrote:
Romans 2:4-11
“Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who WILL RENDER TO EACH PERSON ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS: to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation. There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek, but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For there is no partiality with God.”

God’s patience will end and He will exterminate sinners from the earth.

Sin is the reason for the coming day of the LORD.

#4 THE RESULT
Isaiah 13:12-16

• Ok, so God is angry and He is mustering an army.
• Ok, so men are going to be terrified in that day.
• Ok, so God says He’s going to exterminate sinners from the land.

What will it look like when He is finished?

“I will make mortal man scarcer than pure gold And mankind than the gold of Ophir.”

In short, after the exterminator is done,
The spider problem will be over.

He goes on:
“Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, And the earth will be shaken from its place At the fury of the LORD of hosts In the day of His burning anger.”

You’ve seen this before.

John saw it too.
Revelation 6:12-14 “I looked when He broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood; and the stars of the sky fell to the earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind. The sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.”

I’ve always pictured it as God
Sort of slapping the earth out of orbit
And everything goes wrong after that.

He is so angry and filled with such fury
That He just knocks the earth out of its place.
The natural ramifications alone are staggering.

But here the focus is NOT ON geographical or environmental judgments.
THE FOCUS IS ON GOD’S WRATH POURED OUT ON SINNERS.

And we read:
(14-16) “And it will be that like a hunted gazelle, Or like sheep with none to gather them, They will each turn to his own people, And each one flee to his own land. Anyone who is found will be thrust through, And anyone who is captured will fall by the sword. Their little ones also will be dashed to pieces Before their eyes; Their houses will be plundered And their wives ravished.”

Everything about that is a person’s worst fear.
“like a hunted gazelle”
• Always on the run,
• Always in danger,
• Always someone shooting at you.

“like sheep with none to gather them”
• A defenseless animal,
• Totally dependent upon the care and direction of the shepherd.
• Now left alone with no direction, no protection.

Sinners are hunted and vulnerable and have no clue what to do.

Have you read about the locusts in Revelation?
Revelation 9:2-6 “He opened the bottomless pit, and smoke went up out of the pit, like the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit. Then out of the smoke came locusts upon the earth, and power was given them, as the scorpions of the earth have power. They were told not to hurt the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. And they were not permitted to kill anyone, but to torment for five months; and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings a man. And in those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death flees from them.”

Joel saw them too.
• They aren’t really locusts, they’re demons.
• But they afflict like locusts.

Men are hunted, men are afflicted,
And they have nowhere to turn but to each other.

It’s like two men in a crashing airplane each looking to the other for help.

They’re going to turn to each other; but it won’t help.
They’re going to try to flee home; but it won’t help.

“Anyone who is found will be thrust through, And any who is captured will fall by the sword.”

Do you know what we call that?
NO SURVIVORS.

“Their little ones also will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; Their houses will be plundered and their wives ravished.”

You understand THE RESULT of God’s day of wrath?
It is death, death, death, death, death.

This is not a laughing matter.
This is not a small thing.

When God’s word says that “the wages of sin is death”
You now have a better grasp on the seriousness of God’s warning.

And we’d be failing if we didn’t at least take a moment here
And focus upon the Savior who endured this wrath for us.

On that cross, when the sky went dark, and God dealt with sin,
THIS WAS THE WRATH THAT CHRIST WAS BEARING.

Only He wasn’t bearing God’s wrath for one sinner,
He was bearing God’s wrath for all the elect for all time.

• He was “thrust through” for each of us.
• He was “dashed to pieces” for each of us.

He bore God’s full wrath on that cross to satisfy this fury.
All the anger, all the rage, all the indignation, Christ bore it all.

And His atoning sacrifice; His substitutionary death
Remains the only way for sinners to escape this horrific day.

BUT SINNERS WHO HAVE REJECTED CHRIST and have chosen rather to continue in their sin, will endure this day on their own.

This was the warning of the writer of Hebrews.
Hebrews 10:26-31 “For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a terrifying expectation of judgment and THE FURY OF A FIRE WHICH WILL CONSUME THE ADVERSARIES. Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY.” And again, “THE LORD WILL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE.” It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

ALL SINNERS ARE JUDGED.

They are either judged vicariously through Christ
Or they are judged personally at the hand of God.

And their fate is the same.
DEATH

Not only is it physical death in this life, which all men face,
It is what Scripture calls “the second death.”

Revelation 20:14 “Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.”

That is the ultimate result of the day of God’s wrath.

And then we see:
#5 THE REALITY
Isaiah 13:17-22

Now we are coming to the end.
We are coming to the conclusion of the matter
For this sinful world system.

You do see in verse 17 a reference to “the Medes”

This is another verse that causes problems.
Surely Isaiah as talking about historic Babylon here since he mentions the nation that ultimately conquered them, right?

Well, obviously he was.
But he WAS ALSO speaking of the judgment of this world system.

Just as Babylon would represent the entire evil world system, “the Medes” will represent the army that God uses to destroy them.

This is one of those instances where Isaiah sees both a near and far prophetic fulfillment.
• It is the nation of “the Medes” who will ultimately supplant the nation of Babylon,
• But they did not bring on Babylon the type of destruction that is listed here.
• There is a greater punishment coming on this world, than even the nation of the Medes brought.

And the picture here is that of a judgment which cannot be avoided.

“Who will not value silver or take pleasure in gold.”

We read about that this morning:
Zephaniah 1:18 “Neither their silver nor their gold Will be able to deliver them On the day of the LORD’S wrath; And all the earth will be devoured In the fire of His jealousy, For He will make a complete end, Indeed a terrifying one, Of all the inhabitants of the earth.”

Many times in the book of the Kings
• We see a nation rise up to oppress another nation
• And the solution is to send the threatening king an offering of gold.

IN SHORT, YOU PAY HIM OFF.
He leaves and spares his troops any risk of death in battle,
But he leaves wealthier for his trouble.

THE PROBLEM is on this day the attacking king isn’t looking to get rich.
His only motivation is the destruction of the world.
He can’t be bought off.

What is more, he is RUTHLESS. He will show NO PITY.
(18) “And their bows will mow down the young men, They will not even have compassion on the fruit of the womb, Nor will their eye pity children.”

It is yet another ruthless analogy that
Seems so foreign to our world about God.

They just don’t have a concept of our God in judgment.

They have been brainwashed to believe that
There will never be any consequences for sin, and it just isn’t true.

When God comes forth to judge the world,
He will do so without reprieve and without mercy.

We have recently sung that new hymn entitled, “Not In Me” by Sovereign Grace Music.
I love the stanza which says,
“No separation from the world
No work I do, no gift I give
Can cleanse my conscience, cleanse my hands
I cannot cause my soul to live
But Jesus died and rose again
The power of death is overthrown
My God is merciful to me
And merciful in Christ alone”

God has shown tremendous mercy to this world in sending His Son to save it.
• For those who have rejected His Son…
• For those who have rejected that mercy…
• There will be “no pity”.

It just speaks again and again and again of the vileness of sin.

How many ways can we warn that sin should be avoided?
• God hates it.
• God will judge it.
• God will judge it thoroughly.

And that is seen in verse 19
“And Babylon, the beauty of kingdoms, the glory of the Chaldeans’ pride, will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.”

He’s just going to burn it all.

Everything this world loves in their sinful flesh and God will burn it.

We didn’t read it this morning, but now:
TURN TO: REVELATION 18:8-24

• Do you see the grief?
• Do you see the despair?

HER GLORY IS FINISHED!

Jeremiah 51:60-64 “So Jeremiah wrote in a single scroll all the calamity which would come upon Babylon, that is, all these words which have been written concerning Babylon. Then Jeremiah said to Seraiah, “As soon as you come to Babylon, then see that you read all these words aloud, and say, ‘You, O LORD, have promised concerning this place to cut it off, so that there will be nothing dwelling in it, whether man or beast, but it will be a perpetual desolation.’ “And as soon as you finish reading this scroll, you will tie a stone to it and throw it into the middle of the Euphrates, and say, ‘Just so shall Babylon sink down and not rise again because of the calamity that I am going to bring upon her; and they will become exhausted.’ ” Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.”

RIGHT NOW this world prances and parades and mocks and scoffs
And acts as though they can do whatever they want
And they will always be able to.

NOT SO!

(20-22a) “It will never be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation; Nor will the Arab pitch his tent there, Nor will shepherds make their flocks lie down there, And their houses will be full of owls; Ostriches also will live there, and shaggy goats will frolic there. Hyenas will howl in their fortified towers And jackals in their luxurious palaces.”

This is another reason why we know Isaiah is talking about more than the nation of Babylon.
• Babylon the nation was conquered by the Medes,
• But men live in that nation even today.
• You know it as Iraq.

But this final judgment of God on the world will never again be inhabited.

What does God teach us about His plans beyond the destruction of this world?
Isaiah 65:17 “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former things will not be remembered or come to mind.”

I don’t know what God will do on the new earth that could be so spectacular
That would make one not even remember the Grand Canyon or the Sequoias,
But He’ll do something spectacular.

It will boggle the mind.

And yet the greatest reality is that the new one will have NO SIN.

2 Peter 3:13 “But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.”

This old system is destroyed and replaced with a new one.

The old one will fall and never rise again.
(22b) “Her fateful time also will soon come And her days will not be prolonged.”

It is called “Her fateful time”.
• It is her fate
• It is her destiny
• It is set
• It is coming

GOD WILL JUDGE THIS WORLD.
And Isaiah has spared no graphic language in speaking of this day.
IT IS COMING.

But as we wrap up this 13th chapter it is good to ponder,
WHAT ARE WE TO DO WITH SUCH INFORMATION?

And there are OBVIOUS APPLICATIONS.

We could talk about the NECESSITY OF WARNING SINNERS.
• You remember John’s admonition to “prophesy again” after he got a taste of the coming wrath of God.
• That would not be a wrong response.

And certainly if you have never repented of your sin and trusted in Christ
A passage like this should motivate you to do that now.
• You don’t know the day of His coming, but He is coming.
• He is coming like a storm and it will be just that sudden.
• His judgment will be real.

Certainly this text should motivate repentance.

But listen, as we have said, this passage ISN’T FOR THE LOST.
• This oracle was given to the redeemed.
• This oracle is given to the remnant.
• This oracle was for the church.

And while we take no pleasure in the death of the wicked…
While the judgment of God can turn our stomach bitter…
WE DO LONG for the day when sin is eradicated.

Notice how Peter wrote about the day of the LORD.
2 Peter 3:11-12 “Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat!”

Peter talked about the fury of this day but did you notice how Peter said we approach it?

He said, “looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God”
• As the church we look for this day!
• As the church we hasten this day!
• As the church we pray for this day!
• As the church we long for His appearing!

And so this evening take heart church.
There is coming a day when sin will be destroyed!

WE WILL NEVER AGAIN
• Endure a culture that hurls temptation at us with every billboard and every
commercial.
• Endure a media that flaunts sinful behavior and tells us to embrace it.
• Be gagged with vileness just crammed down our throats.

THIS WORLD IS SO VILE TODAY THAT
It BRINGS NOTHING BUT deception and defilement and depravity.

• It seeks to drag us into sin.
• It seeks to indoctrinate our children with perversion.
• It seeks to push us to tolerate sin and embrace folly.

I was listening to an interview with Al Mohler this week who was discussing the Target pride display that has led to so many boycotting the store.

And the questioner was asking Why Target would do such a thing even though it clearly has hurt their revenue?

And Mohler’s answer was spot on.
He said that “Progressives count on the fact that offense lessens over time. And so the left has argued that this is one of the ways you make progress. You offend people and then they’re just less offended next year and then less offended next year.”

Target isn’t doing this because they think it will make them money.
Target is doing this because they are part of a corrupt world ideology
That is seeking to move your meter to become more tolerant of sin.

Oh sure you hate it right now, but after a year of it, they’re betting you’ll swallow some of it and then move your “normal meter” further to the left.

AND BY PERSISTENCE THEY DEFILE.

That is our world.
And we fight it on literally every street corner.

And let’s be honest.
IT IS EXHAUSTING!

Now it’s not exhausting if you don’t war against it,
But many do and for them it is exhausting.

• You often times stand alone.
• You often times lose your argument.
• You often times find people who stand with you today giving in tomorrow.
(You know they boycott Target today, but within 3 months they’re over it)

You feel like you’re using a tea spoon to hold back a title wave.
IT FEELS LIKE A LOSING BATTLE.

BUT GOD…
God has promised His church that this sin infested environment will not win the day.

He will come and He will pour out His rage upon sin and upon sinners
And He will put an end to all of it.

And there has to be at least some part of us that hears that and yells, “HALLELUJAH!”

Our God is coming and He will deal with it.

And this is very much an ANTICIPATED RESPONSE by Isaiah.

Isaiah 35:3-4 “Encourage the exhausted, and strengthen the feeble. Say to those with anxious heart, “Take courage, fear not. Behold, your God will come with vengeance; The recompense of God will come, But He will save you.”

Isaiah clearly sees the message of God’s impending judgment
As a message meant to
Encourage the exhausted and strengthen the feeble.

John said the same:
When he spoke of the fall of Babylon:
Revelation 18:20 “Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you saints and apostles and prophets, because God has pronounced judgment for you against her.”

In our culture if you stand against sin
• You are called hateful,
• And not like Jesus,
• And out of touch,
• And homophobic,
• And misogynistic,
• And sometimes racist,
• And whatever else they can come up with.

IT IS EXHAUSTING TO STAND AGAINST SIN.
It is exhausting to stand for the truth.
It can make you feeble trying to continue in the fight.

And to that group of people Isaiah’s message is music to the ears.

It is not that we delight in the destruction of the wicked,
But we certainly long for a day when God puts an end to sin.

Living in this world is like
Standing in garbage pit with people
Continually dumping more on your head
And we sure look forward to someone putting a stop to all of it.

Well, “Take courage, fear not. Behold, your God will come with vengeance; The recompense of God will come, But He will save you.”

That is the hope of the church as we study these oracles.

And I don’t really want to get in to it too much tonight,
But we even look at what ISAIAH SAYS NEXT.

(14:1) “When the LORD will have compassion on Jacob…”

This judgment of sinners is actually viewed
As an act of compassion from God toward His people.

He has pulled our lives up out of the miry clay
And we look forward to the day when He destroys all the miry clay.

THAT DAY IS COMING.
So church, don’t lose heart.
• Church, don’t stop standing.
• Church, don’t give in.
• Church, don’t assimilate.
• Church, don’t compromise.

Stand for the truth, stand for righteousness,
The “day of the LORD” is coming and on that day WE WIN!

The Oracle Concerning Babylon – Part 1
Isaiah 13:1-14:23 (13:1-9)
June 25, 2023

If you were with us last Sunday night you know that we introduced
This most intimidating section of Scripture here in the book of Isaiah.

If you’ve read through Isaiah you know that chapters 13 through 23
Are very difficult to grasp and very difficult to swallow.

We call them “The Oracles”
• “Oracle” is a word that means “burden”
• And it is literally the burden that God is placing on the back of sinful people.
• Depending on how you count them Isaiah addresses between 11 and 13 nations here in this segment.
• And they are messages filled with judgment.

If you were not here last Sunday night I would encourage you to go and listen to that sermon online, as it will help you understand what is going on here better.

But to just quickly remind you.
These oracles are MESSAGES FOR THE CHURCH.
• The nations Isaiah references here never heard these messages.
• They were given for the church’s benefit.

And we discussed how studying these oracles
• Should give you HOPE,
• Should grow your FAITH and drive you toward Christ
• Should give you WARNING.

• Since Peter says that “judgment is to begin with the household of God…”
• Since Jesus warned that “not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord’ will
enter the kingdom…”
• Since Paul warned us not to participate in certain sins since “it is because of
these things that the wrath of God comes upon the sons of
disobedience…”

This segment in Isaiah should drive us to
A time of self-evaluation to make our calling and election sure.

But as we said, that was all covered last Sunday night.

We also, last Sunday night,
Briefly addressed this first oracle which is identified in verse 1 as, “The oracle concerning Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw.”

I told you that this particular oracle
Causes problems for many commentators.

The reason is because
• During Isaiah’s day, Babylon isn’t even on the scene yet.
• They really aren’t even a threat.
• It will be another 75 years before Babylon threatens Jerusalem.

The problem IS NOT that Isaiah is seeing problems that have not yet occurred, he is a prophet after all.

The problem for many commentators is
WHY ISAIAH WOULD ADDRESS THIS ONE FIRST?

• If Isaiah has any desire to address the people of his day, you might eventually get to the future, but the bully of Isaiah’s day is not Babylon, it is Assyria.

• Now, because of this there are some, as we mentioned, who think that this is really about Assyria since during Isaiah’s day Babylon was a city that was controlled by Assyria.

• But there’s a stretch in making that argument.

So why did Isaiah address Babylon first?
(Especially if it would have seemed irrelevant to his contemporaries…)

And here is the reason:
• When Isaiah addresses Babylon here in chapters 13 & 14 he is addressing more than just the future nation of Babylon.
• Isaiah is addressing the entire world system.

Babylon is often in Scripture used as a representative of the world.

FOR EXAMPLE:
The birthplace of all false religion is actually found in Genesis 11

TURN TO: Genesis 11:1-9
• The tower of Babel is legalism personified.
• It is works-based religion at its finest.

It is a dramatic picture of men
Who are trying to figure out how to get to heaven
And logical thinking their plan was to build a tower to get there.

Of course God scattered them that day
And man’s plans for works-based salvation
Have propagated from that day across the globe.

Their idea was the best that man could come up with.
(All human efforts are just as foolish)

Thankfully Paul addressed that thinking for us in Romans 10:

Romans 10:6-9 “But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: “DO NOT SAY IN YOUR HEART, ‘WHO WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN?’ (that is, to bring Christ down), or ‘WHO WILL DESCEND INTO THE ABYSS?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).” But what does it say? “THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;”

Paul explains to us that to obtain salvation:
• It does not requiring us ascending into Heaven and bringing Christ down to save us.
• Nor does it require us descending into the grave and rescuing Christ from death.

No, all salvation requires is faith.
“if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;”

Salvation is not by works like the men of Babel thought, it is only by faith.

But the works-based false religion that started in Babel
Has literally spread throughout the world.

It comes in various forms and fashions
But it has the same inability to reconcile man and God.

But that was just the start of Babylon.

We certainly are aware of the major role the nation of Babylon will play in the persecution of God’s people.

• We know how Nebuchadnezzar will sack Jerusalem, tear down its walls and
burn the temple.
• We know how he will exile the few survivors to Babylon.
• We know how he will seek to force them into acts of paganism and even
idolatry as he commands them all to bow to a golden image of himself.
• We know how his grandson Belshazzar used the golden utensils stolen from
the temple and Jerusalem as instruments of sin and immorality.

So not only is Babylon a picture of false religion,
She is also a clear picture of the enmity
That the world has for God and for His people.

Legalistic religion always persecutes the true redemption of God.
• Ishmael mocked Isaac and had to be sent away.

Even today, men who stroke their ego
By believing that they have done something to merit their salvation
Have enmity for those who receive salvation by grace alone.
Paul makes that clear in his letter to the Galatians.

Well, that was Babylon.
• An evil world system that promotes legalistic false religion.
• An evil world system that persecutes the true people of God.

But their story does not top there.

TURN TO: ZECHARIAH 5

In Zechariah we are confronted with a sort of bizarre and cryptic story,
But it’s not that difficult once we think it through a little.

It begins in the first 4 verses with a flying scroll which is clearly the word of God.
• We read how it enters houses and convicts sinners.
• It exposes liars and thieves and false converts.
• God is the force behind it, as it is His instrument to purify His people.

A key phrase is in verse 4 when God says, “I will make it go forth”

SO GOD IS SENDING FORTH HIS WORD.

Now there’s a reason for this, and it is because currently in the world it is not God’s word that is going forth, rather it is wickedness.

Verse 5 says, “Lift up no your eyes and see what is going forth.”

So in the world we have something that is “going forth”
But it is not God’s word.
God will send His word to confront that reality.

So what is going forth in the world?
• In verses 6-8 it’s very symbolic but the easy explanation is that whatever this woman is Zechariah calls her “wickedness”.

So currently in the world wickedness is going forth,
And God would send His word to confront that. Makes sense.

But notice what happens.
(9-11) Before this wicked woman can be destroyed she is rescued and they take her “to build a temple for her in the land of Shinar; and when it is prepared, she will be set there on her own pedestal.”

And just to make sure you make the connection,
“the land of Shinar” is Babylon.

SO…
• Not only is Babylon the propagator of false religion.
• Not only is Babylon the persecutor of the things of God.
• Babylon is also the protector of wickedness.

Now there is ONE MORE reference to Babylon that we need to see.
TURN TO: REVELATION 17

Read verses 1-6

That picture alone sort of makes it all come into focus doesn’t it?
• This wicked woman has shown up again.
• She is propagating her false religion.
• She is spreading wickedness and immorality.
• She is on her pedestal.
• She is worshiped and adored.
• All the kings of the world are in on it.
• And she is a great persecutor of the people of God.

And not only that, but we learn that
She is ultimately used and sustained by Satan.

• She is the product of his scheming.
• He is the architect of this evil world system
• She is under his control.
• He is using her for the corruption of the world and the persecution of God’s people.

Now TURN TO: REVELATION 18

Read verses 1-3
• It is more of the same.
• She is the evil world system of sexual immorality and sinful pleasure.

And here God announces her destruction.

But notice the response to her demise.
Read verses 4-24

You see Babylon is also representative of the evil world economic system.
• She makes sinful men get rich and satisfies their base and fleshly lusts.
• She is the very epitome of sin and uncleanness.
• She is the very epitome of worldliness and greed.
• And on the day God judges Babylon sinners will lament and grieve.

Today perhaps it might be like if God were to wipe out Las Vegas.
• All the sin and gambling and immorality and greed and excess and rampant
sinfulness just totally eradicated…
• People would grieve and mourn the loss because of all the sinful pleasure that
it represented.

Well Las Vegas is just a dot on the map
Which sort of represents the worst of humanity.
But in reality this is the world.

And what a lesson on the true colors of the world Babylon is.
• That which propagates false religion.
• That which persecutes the people of God.
• That which protects wickedness.
• That which is powered by Satan.
• That which is pursued by the unredeemed.

WE ARE TALKING HERE ABOUT
THE EVIL AND SATANIC WORLD SYSTEM.

This first oracle concerning Babylon is far more
Than just a city in Isaiah’s day
Or a nation that invaded Israel 2600 years ago.

Babylon is a way of identifying the evil world system as a whole.
AND THAT IS WHERE ISAIAH STARTS.
• He DOESN’T START by speaking of God’s destruction of a single nation,
• He STARTS these oracles by speaking of God’s destruction of the entire sinful and Satanic world system.

And this ISN’T HARD TO SEE as we work through it.

Look down at verse 5, “They are coming from a far country, From the farthest horizons, The LORD and His instruments of indignation, To destroy the whole land.”

Look down at verse 11, “Thus I will punish the world for its evil…”

Look at verse 13, “Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, And the earth will be shaken from its place At the fury of the LORD of hosts In the day of His burning anger.”

But the most telling comes at the end of chapter 14

Look at 14:26-27, “This is the plan devised against the whole earth; and this is the hand that is stretched out against all the nations. “For the LORD of hosts has planned, and who can frustrate it? And as for His stretched-out hand, who can turn it back?”

That is what we are talking about.
• It is God’s announcement…
• God’s oracle…
• God’s burden that He will lay on the back of this sinful world.

And we now come face to face with the reality that
This world and its evil world system are on a countdown.

God will destroy this world along with all its iniquity.

We know He is capable and willing for He only made it 6 chapters into the Bible
Before He flooded the whole world in global judgment the first time.

But Peter said:
2 Peter 3:7 “But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.”

He won’t flood this world again.

He already gave a precursor to what the next judgment will look like.

He showed us that in the 19th chapter of Genesis when
He rained fire and brimstone upon the immoral cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.

God will again destroy this world and its ungodly men.

Psalms 9:8 “And He will judge the world in righteousness; He will execute judgment for the peoples with equity.”

AND THE NAME FOR THIS FATEFUL DAY
In which God will destroy the earth
And execute judgment upon it is called:
“The Day of the Lord”

Ezekiel 30:3 “For the day is near, Even the day of the LORD is near; It will be a day of clouds, A time of doom for the nations.”

Joel 1:15 “Alas for the day! For the day of the LORD is near, And it will come as destruction from the Almighty.”

Joel 2:11b “The day of the LORD is indeed great and very awesome, And who can endure it?”

2 Peter 3:10 “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.”

You get the idea.
• This world is headed for judgment.
• It is headed for a date of destruction.
• We read words like “near” and “doom” and “destruction” and “awesome”

But no one gave more adjectives to that day than the prophet Zephaniah.

Zephaniah 1:14-18 “Near is the great day of the LORD, Near and coming very quickly; Listen, the day of the LORD! In it the warrior cries out bitterly. A day of wrath is that day, A day of trouble and distress, A day of destruction and desolation, A day of darkness and gloom, A day of clouds and thick darkness, A day of trumpet and battle cry Against the fortified cities And the high corner towers. I will bring distress on men So that they will walk like the blind, Because they have sinned against the LORD; And their blood will be poured out like dust And their flesh like dung. Neither their silver nor their gold Will be able to deliver them On the day of the LORD’S wrath; And all the earth will be devoured In the fire of His jealousy, For He will make a complete end, Indeed a terrifying one, Of all the inhabitants of the earth.”

This is the day in which God comes
And begins to deal with sinners in justice.

CURRENTLY, we are now in a time of God’s patience.

2 Peter 3:8-9 “But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.”

• God is now patiently waiting until all of His elect are saved.
• It is a time of common grace where it rains on the just and the unjust.
• It is a time of basic love where God wishes good will on all men.

But the current time is a temporary one.
• There is coming a day in which God will deal with every rebel.
• There is coming a day in which God will crush His enemies.
• He will trample them underfoot and destroy them.

ISAIAH SAW THAT DAY.
It is important that we as the church understand what he saw.

Let’s start looking at that one this morning.
• It covers in total 2 chapters and there will be 8 points,
• But let’s just start working through it.

#1 THE RECRUITMENT
Isaiah 13:1-5

This oracle of God’s judgment against the evil world system called “Babylon”
• Begins with God filling the role of a military recruiter
• Summoning to Himself an army
• To go out and execute His anger.

(2) “Lift up a standard on the bare hill, Raise your voice to them, Wave the hand that they may enter the doors of the nobles.”

• It is God signaling His soldiers
• It is God recruiting His army
• It is God pictured as entering castles and strongholds to gather warriors to Himself.
• He is recruiting an army.

AND IT IS AN ARMY BUILT FOR ONE PURPOSE.
It is NOT to keep the peace.
It is NOT to defend God’s house.
It is NOT to coerce men to change their behavior.

(3) “I have commanded My consecrated ones, I have even called My mighty warriors, My proudly exulting ones, To execute My anger.”

This army of God has been assembled for ONE PURPOSE.
“To execute My anger”

There is a startling reality to many in our world today.
The notion that God has anger.

Does He?
Psalms 7:11 “God is a righteous judge, And a God who has indignation every day.”

Do a concordance search regarding “the anger of the LORD burned”.
• Exodus and Numbers and Deuteronomy are filled with the phrase.
• They built a golden calf…
• They grumbled about no water…
• They sought to supplant Moses…

We’ve already read several times here in Isaiah
About God’s anger being directed toward His people because of their sin.

• Five times we’ve read the phrase, “In spite of all this His anger does not turn away And His hand is still stretched out.”
• We saw God raise up the Assyrians to invade and punish sinners.

YES, GOD HAS ANGER.

How could a holy God look upon this sin infested world and not be angry?

Do not confuse His patience with approval.
Just because He has not yet unleashed judgment
Does not mean He is not angry about it.

There is coming a day when God will raise up an army for one purpose
And it will be “To execute My anger.”

And rest assured the army He raises WILL BE ABLE to do it.

He calls them “My consecrated ones”
• Which speaks of people who are raised up and trained up for this very purpose.

WE THINK IN OUR DAY OF SPECIAL FORCES.
Navy Seals or Army Rangers who are specifically chosen
And trained for a particular mission.

He calls them “My mighty warriors”
• Which speaks of their power and fighting ability.

He calls them “My proudly exulting ones”
• Which speaks of their confidence.
• They know they are going to win.

And this super army will be raised up by God to unleash His fury.

And in verse 4 we hear the DREADFUL SOUND OF THEIR MARCH.

(4) “A sound of tumult on the mountains, Like that of many people! A sound of the uproar of kingdoms, Of nations gathered together! The LORD of hosts is mustering the army for battle.”

• Off in the distance you can hear them coming…
• Off in the distance you can hear their march…

You say, “I don’t hear anything.”

Well listen to how Jesus described it.
Matthew 24:4-7 “And Jesus answered and said to them, “See to it that no one misleads you. “For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will mislead many. “You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end. “For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes.”

Do you hear it now?

(5) “They are coming from a far country, From the farthest horizons, The LORD and His instruments of indignation, To destroy the whole land.”

You do understand that when we talk about
The coming judgment of God
We are not talking about “if” we are talking about “when”.

God’s judgment is coming.
His “indignation” is on its way.

And He will “destroy the whole land.”

• About 6,000 years ago the place where you are sitting right now was under water as God flooded the earth,
• And there is coming a day in which the place where you are sitting will be destroyed with fire.

It is a terrible day that is coming.

TO WHICH ISAIAH SAYS:
(6) “Wail, for the day of the LORD is near! It will come as destruction from the Almighty.”

• It’s NOT a day of repentance.
• It’s NOT a day of salvation.
• It’s NOT a day of negotiation.
• It is ONLY a day for sinners to scream in horror.

When the day of the LORD comes
The only objective of the armies of God is “destruction”.

They have no other agenda.
God is coming to judge the earth.
He has recruited His army to do it.

There’s a second thing we see here.
#2 THE RESPONSE
Isaiah 13:7-8

This is the sinner’s response to the day of the LORD.
The response of the righteous comes in chapter 14.

We read this verse last Sunday night just to get a taste
Of the sort of things we’ll be studying in these oracles.

BUT LOOK AT THIS.

When is the last time you can say that you were truly terrified?

I think about our poor neighbors in Matador this past Wednesday night.
• People who were pulled out of the wreckage of collapsed homes.
• People who watched buildings and vehicles blow away.

You know that many of them were terrified.

We are talking here about a terror where
You are in the midst of extreme danger
And you have no control over it.

(7) “Therefore all hands will fall limp, And every man’s heart will melt.”

(8) “The will be terrified, Pains and anguish will take hold of them; They will writhe like a woman in labor, They will look at one another in astonishment, Their faces aflame.”

• That means their faces are pale white, they have no blood in them.
• They are utterly terrified.
• They are literally gripped with fear.

Odds are pretty good that you’ve been scared before in your life,
But it’s doubtful that most in here have ever been that scared.

Perhaps if you’ve been in a storm like our neighbors.
Maybe if you were a soldier off in war and facing battle.

The response to the day of the LORD is absolute gut-wrenching terror.
It is terror beyond what the human mind can fathom.

Ezekiel 22:14 “Can your heart endure, or can your hands be strong in the days that I will deal with you? I, the LORD, have spoken and will act.”

And the obvious answer is: NO!
• You can’t endure it.
• You’re not strong enough.
• You’re not brave enough.

I don’t know where you think you measure on the courage meter but it’s not high enough. “all hands will fall limp…every man’s heart will melt.”

We hear of men scampering into holes in the ground
And crying out for the rocks to fall on them
And hide them from the presence of the LORD.

• On that day NO ONE will talk back.
• On that day NO ONE will fight back.
• On that day NO ONE will clinch their fist and stiffen their neck and “take it like
a man”

Everyone will quiver in fear.
No one is strong enough to endure God’s wrath.

Hebrews 10:31 “It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

IF YOU WANT AN ILLUSTRATION,
Scripture provides for us a unique one.

“There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job.”
• He was an upright and righteous man fearing God and turning away from evil.
• But Satan incited God to chastise Job and Job lost everything.
• From the midst of his pain Job actually stated that he wished God would appear before him and given him an explanation.

Job would live to regret that request for in Job 38 the storm arrived.
Job 38:1-3 “Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said, “Who is this that darkens counsel By words without knowledge? “Now gird up your loins like a man, And I will ask you, and you instruct Me!”

• We’ve had tornadoes on our mind this week.
• Let this verse sink in.
• A tornado showed up at Job’s house and Job did what you would do, he fell down and cowered in fear.
• God told him, “gird up your loins like a man, And I will ask you, and you instruct Me!”

God told Job to get up and face the whirlwind.
Get up and face the tornado and answer Me.
You asked for Me, well, here I am.

I can’t even fathom the scene.

Halfway through the storm, God asked for a response.
Job 40:1-7 “Then the LORD said to Job, “Will the faultfinder contend with the Almighty? Let him who reproves God answer it.” Then Job answered the LORD and said, “Behold, I am insignificant; what can I reply to You? I lay my hand on my mouth. “Once I have spoken, and I will not answer; Even twice, and I will add nothing more.” Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm and said, “Now gird up your loins like a man; I will ask you, and you instruct Me.”

• Job was ready to hit the cellar at that point,
• But the LORD wasn’t finished.
• You stand there Job and listen.
• And God went on.

And when God finally finished addressing Job.
Job 42:1-6 “Then Job answered the LORD and said, “I know that You can do all things, And that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted. ‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’ “Therefore I have declared that which I did not understand, Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.” ‘Hear, now, and I will speak; I will ask You, and You instruct me.’ “I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear; But now my eye sees You; Therefore I retract, And I repent in dust and ashes.”

Do you think Job ever had a notion to invite God to come stand right in front of him again?

And you want the remarkable part?
GOD WASN’T EVEN OUT TO DESTROY JOB.

YOU CAN’T HANDLE IT.

Remember when God came down on Mt. Sinai?
Exodus 20:18-19 “All the people perceived the thunder and the lightning flashes and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood at a distance. Then they said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen; but let not God speak to us, or we will die.”

You understand the point.
God is coming with destruction in His hand,
And no man will be able to endure it.

But before we close this morning LET’S ASK the most obvious question.
WHY?

Why is God coming to destroy the world?

#3 THE REASON
Isaiah 13:9-12

There are some more adjectives to describe “the day of the LORD”
Words like “cruel” and “fury” and “burning anger”

Again we see that He will “make the land a desolation”

BUT WHY?
“And He will exterminate its sinners from it.”

Why is He angry?
Why is He coming?
He is coming to kill sinners.

OFTEN TIMES we talk about the dangers and CONSEQUENCES of sin.

We look at a drunk
• And warn him about the dangers he poses to his health
• And we talk about the dangers he poses to his family.

We look at an adulterer
• And we warn him about wrecking his family.

We look at a greedy man
• And we warn him about the realities of being unfulfilled and it never being enough.

And look, those warnings are true.
• Sin brings with it inherent consequences and dangers.
• Sin will ruin your life, it will wreck your marriage, it will splatter into the lives of your kids.

But none of those reasons are the primary reasons
That sin should be avoided.

Do you want to know why sin is so bad?
God will kill you if you do it.

Romans 6:23a “For the wages of sin is death…”

There’s more to talk about here, but thus far the point is clear.
• This world is a sinking ship.
• It has been marked for destruction.
• God will destroy it because of the sin upon it.

THE WISE MAN REALIZES THAT
And forsakes this world and all its ideologies
And wisdom and logic and false religion
AND CLINGS TO CHRIST.

1 John 2:15-17 “Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.”

That is the very truth of God.
Babylon won’t last, don’t go down with the ship.

THIS MORNING
• Instead of anticipating the wrath of God,
• I would invite you to embrace the mercy of God which comes only through Jesus Christ.

Jesus said it very clearly.
John 3:16-21 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. “For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. “But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”

Jesus bore God’s wrath that you might be saved from it.
Cry out to Him right now.
