The Scariest Passage in Scripture (Matthew 7:21-23)

The Scariest Passage in Scripture
Matthew 7:21-23

As you know we have been studying through the Sermon on the Mount.
And you also know that we are now wrapping this great sermon up.

And this morning we come to what I have called
“The Scariest Passage in Scripture.”

In this passage of Scripture a spiritual reality is revealed to us
That is absolutely terrifying to understand.
AND THAT IS THE REALITY OF RELIGIOUS PEOPLE IN HELL.

And this was a reality that Jesus first revealed to us back in verse 13.

Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. “For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

What Jesus revealed to us there was indeed a difficult truth to swallow,
And that was the truth that most people
Who think they are going to heaven aren’t.

The reason of course is because when it comes down to it,
Most people choose sin over righteousness.

Christ has systematically laid out for us what righteousness looks like throughout this sermon.
• It is humility (poor in spirit)
• It is mourning over sin
• It is meekness (submission)
• It is hungering and thirsting for righteousness
• It is to continually shine your light
• It is to continually be salt

• And it is to be better than the most religious people alive.
Matthew 5:20 “For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.”

• It is to live a life without anger in your heart.
• It is to live a life without lust in your heart.
• It is to live a life without deceit in your heart.
• It is to live a life without unfaithfulness in your heart.
• It is to live a life without revenge in your heart.

• It is to perform religion without the slightest desire for personal glory.
• It is to love God’s favor more than the things of this world.
• It is to have a humble and proper view of self.

The standards that Jesus has outlined are rigid and extreme.
You might even call them “narrow”

And when the masses come wanting to go to heaven,
Most don’t make it because
Most aren’t willing to put forth the effort that is required.

Most choose a “broader” lifestyle.

The amazing thing is that even though they choose
This “broad” lifestyle over the one Christ called for,
Most still think they are headed to heaven.

THEY ARE DECEIVED.

SOME ARE DECEIVED BY THE FALSE PROPHETS
• They are wolves in sheep’s clothing
• They usher people through the wide gate
• They give out gobs of false assurance

And while that is a scary truth,
Most in the church seem to have an answer for it.

The False Prophets are those pushing false religions
(Islam / Jehovah’s Witnesses)
The people on the wide road are people in false religion.

But Jesus blows that notion out of the water with this passage.

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’”

And all of a sudden everyone in the pews has to take a step back.
These aren’t the wicked…
These aren’t the muslims…

These are people who called Jesus Lord.
These are people who preached in Jesus’ name.
These are people who cast out demons in Jesus’ name.
These are people who worked miracles in Jesus’ name.
And yet, they are going to hell.

You see, these reveal to us that there is a much greater deception Than just the deception of false prophets.

There is something out there that is lying to people
With a far higher success rate than any false prophet ever had.

WHAT IS IT?
Your own heart

Jeremiah 17:9-10 “The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it? “I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give to each man according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds.”

More than false prophets.
More than demons.
More than the devil himself.
NOTHING LIES LIKE THE HEART.

And that is the problem we see here in this text.
These people are deceived. (self-deceived)

Based upon their religious involvement they have convinced themselves that they are headed to heaven, and they are wrong.

I can’t think of a more horrifying scene, than the Day of Judgment,
When men and women are desperately looking up
Their baptism certificates, giving receipts, and mission trip pictures,
Desperately trying to prove they are saved;
Only to hear Jesus tell them otherwise.

According to Jesus, hell will be full of actively religious people.
And even people who were active in the right religion.

3 points
#1 THE FRIGHTENING REVELATION
Matthew 7:21

In order for this revelation to startle us,
We only have to read the first two words:
“Not everyone”

According to that we ought to quit singing “When we all get to heaven”,
Because Jesus clearly indicates that “all” aren’t going.

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven.”

There will actually be people who in this life said with their mouth
That Jesus is Lord who will not go to heaven.

This is one of the prerequisites for salvation.
Romans 10:9-10 “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.”
Paul indicates that true salvation occurs
When a person is so convinced of the Lordship of Jesus in their heart
That the confession automatically comes out of their mouth.

“out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks”.
And that is what Paul refers to.

And yet Jesus here reveals that not every one of those
Who actually say that He is Lord are going to heaven.

That can only reveal one problem.
They obviously missed the other requirement.

They said it with their mouth, they just didn’t believe it with their heart.

You see, you can’t believe without confessing,
But you can confess without believing.

IT IS CALLED EMPTY PROFESSION.
It is when people something with their mouth
That is not a reality in their heart.

Titus 1:16 “They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.”

James 2:14 “What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him?”

Jesus even seemed puzzled by these people.
Luke 6:46 “Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?”

It almost seemed puzzling to Jesus that people would say He was Lord,
When they had no intention whatsoever of obeying Him.

And those are the people Jesus is speaking of here.
They claim to know God.
They claim that Jesus is Lord.

But the words of their mouth are as far as their commitment ever goes.
And that is why they won’t go to heaven.

Of all the people who say Jesus is Lord
There are only a few who actually will go to heaven.

WHO ARE THEY?
“but he who DOES the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.”

Confessing Jesus as Lord is required,
But it is only valid if it is accompanied with obedience.
If you say Jesus is Lord, but you don’t obey Him,
Then your confession is a lie and you have deluded yourself.

The only people in heaven are those who confess Jesus is Lord
AND do the will of the Father.

WHAT IS THE WILL OF THE FATHER?
Be poor in spirit
Mourn over sin
Be meek
Hunger and Thirst for righteousness
Let your light shine
Do not be angry
Do not lust over a woman
Do not break covenant
Do not break integrity
Pray for your enemy
Do not do your religion for your own glory
Do not love the world
Seek first His kingdom
Do not judge your neighbor
Love your neighbor as yourself

Matthew 5:48 “Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

God demands righteousness.

1 Thessalonians 4:3a “For this is the will of God, your sanctification…”

Only the righteous will enter.

And of course that is why we
Are in such desperate need of the salvation of Christ.

That is why we are in need of justification.
Romans 5:6-11 “For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.”

We need to truly surrender our lives to Christ.
We need to believe in Him.
We need to not only call Him Lord, but to obey Him as Lord.

We need His sacrificial death to make us righteous
Because only those who are righteous in the sight of God
Get to go to heaven.
John 6:28-29 “Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”

We need Christ.

And we don’t just need to say He is Lord,
We must submit our lives to Him as Lord.

Because according to Jesus, “Not everyone who SAYS to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven”

And that is a frightening revelation
#2 THE FUTILE RESUME
Matthew 7:22

I suppose you have to hand it man for trying.

Because come judgment day, religious men and women
Will be pulling out all the stops in order to plead their case.
And they show up to the judgment with their resume in tact.

And please notice how many will do this.
“Many”

In other words, those same people who are on the wide road.

When they come to their turn to stand before God,
They are going to do everything in their power
To convince Him that they should get to go to heaven.

And notice they start talking about all their deeds.
“Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’”

That alone is enough to discourage some of us.

Especially if you were planning to stand before God and say,
“I was baptized on July 17, 1985.” Or,
“I was a member of First Baptist Church for 75 years”.

These guys have that beat something fierce.
These guys were preachers.
These guys cast out demons.
These guys worked miracles.

And notice they did it all in Jesus name.
I mean that is quite a resume.
They are trying to convince Jesus why they should get to go into heaven.

And friend if you find yourself standing before God trying to convince Him
As to why you should get to go into heaven, you are already in a world of hurt.

But that is what these people are doing.
They offer up to God all of their religious deeds.

Yet if you fast forward down to verse 23
You will see what Jesus thought of their “good deeds”.

“you who practice lawlessness.”

Jesus called all of their “good deeds” wickedness.
Isaiah 64:6 “For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.”

God is no more impressed with your baptism certificate,
Or your giving receipt than you are
With the poop your dog scatters all over your back yard.
It’s filthy to Him.

These people may have done the right deeds,
But they weren’t pleasing to God.

They were like the hypocrite who gave to be noticed by men, or who prayed to be noticed by men, or who fasted to be noticed by men.

BUT THEY BRING THEIR DEEDS TO GOD NONE THE LESS.

A Frightening Revelation A Futile Resume
#3 THE FINAL RULING
Matthew 7:23

After they finish going through all the sermons they preached.
After they finish listing the name of every person they cast demons out of.
After they finish detailing every miracle.

They turn to the judge for His answer.
“And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’”

And some will say, well how did they do all that if they didn’t know God?
Didn’t Balaam prophesy?
Didn’t Caiaphas prophesy?
Didn’t the seven sons of Sceva cast out demons?
Didn’t the magicians of Egypt work miracles?

I can’t explain to you how they did this stuff, but they did.
What is clear is that the fact that they did them,
Convinced them that they were saved when they weren’t.

And men convince themselves with a lot less today.
Men go to church
Men get baptized
Men give money

But none of those where the criteria.
Righteousness was the criteria.

THEY WERE BUSY IN ALL SORTS OF “JESUS” ACTIVITY,
BUT JESUS DIDN’T KNOW THEM.

And it reveals a bit of misnomer in our religious thinking.

People continually ask the question today, “Do you know Jesus?”
And people routinely answer “yes”.

Does it surprise you to know that there is no one standing outside the gates of heaven with a clipboard asking that question?

Because I could ask anyone in this room if they knew Jesus
And they would all say, “Yes”.

Because the fact is we all know Him.

But you know something, I know Troy Aikman too.
(Some facts about him)
(I even know how he responds in some situations)

I even have a napkin that he wrote his name on.
(I didn’t get it, my college roommate saw him in a restaurant and got it for me)

Yet that is exactly the type of relationship many have with Jesus.
They know His stats.
They know what team He plays for.
They know how many championships He has won.
Some even have a piece of paper that contains words He wrote (bible).

But if you were to approach Troy Aikman and ask him about me,
He would say, “Who? I don’t know who he is.”

And yet sadly that is precisely the same with Jesus.

The problem isn’t that these people didn’t know Jesus.
They were obviously calling Him Lord.
THE PROBLEM WAS THAT JESUS DIDN’T KNOW THEM.

“I never knew you”
You preached sermons…
You cast out demons…
You worked miracles…
But I don’t know who you are.

He didn’t know them because they didn’t follow Him.
He was on the narrow road and they were on the wide one.
These are people who heard about Jesus, but they didn’t follow Him.

That is what we see next week.

This morning we talk about people with empty words.
Next week we see people with lousy ears.
Matthew 7:24-27 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. “Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. “The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell — and great was its fall.”

Some profess, but don’t obey.
Some hear, but don’t obey.

And because Jesus doesn’t know them,
He will say, “Depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.”

Even though they call Him Lord.
Even though they do religious deeds.
They will still go to hell when they die.

AND FRIEND, THAT IS A TERRIFYING TRUTH.

This isn’t a sermon preached to the godless,
This was a sermon preached to the most religious people of the day.

The Sermon on the Mount was meant for the slums,
The Sermon on the Mount was meant for the sanctuary.

Jesus is trying to open the eyes of the self-deceived.

• It’s not about what you say, it’s about what you do.
• It’s not about who you know, it’s about who knows you.
• And everything you do is useless, if it is done on the wide road.

I think this is obviously a call for Self-Evaluation.

According to Jesus, there will be people from this room,
Who right now think they are headed to heaven,
Who one day will be shocked to find out otherwise.
And if that is me, I would rather find out now, instead of then.

It calls for self-examination.

2 Corinthians 13:5 “Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you — unless indeed you fail the test?”

How do you know you are saved?
How do you know you are a child of God?
“I just know” – how?

Because you want it to be true?
Friend go to Scripture and make sure!

2 Peter 1:10-11 “Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.”

Self-examination is important.

That is one of the reasons the Lord has us continually return to His table.
1 Corinthians 11:28 “But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.”

And friend you and I must do it to.

I claim to know Jesus, but does Jesus know Me?
Am I following Jesus, and is it evident in my life?
Not by my religious works, but by my fruit.

You want a list?
2 Peter 1:5-9 “Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins.”

Want another?
Galatians 5:19-24 “Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”

Want another?
1 John 2:3-5 “By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him:”

Want another?
1 John 3:16-20 “We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him? Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth. We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will assure our heart before Him in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things.”

Want another?
James 1:26-27 “If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless. Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.”

And we could go on and on and on.

The point is friend don’t convince yourself you are saved
Because you are religious.

Take the truth of Scripture and the righteous standard of God
And evaluate your life by it and see if Christ is in you.

Because there are many who think He is, and He is not.

If you find He is not in you, then strive to enter the narrow gate.
Ask Christ for righteousness.
Beg Him to make you new.
Let go of your own life and choose to follow Him no matter what.

Put to death the old you and find new life in Christ

And He will save you.
Matthew 16:24-25 “Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.”

Spotting the Wolves (Matthew 7:15-20)

Spotting The Wolves
Matthew 7:15-20

We are now in the most critical portion of the Sermon on the Mount.
Jesus is in the middle of His final point.

I. God’s Righteousness Examined (Ch. 5)
II. False Righteousness Exposed (Ch. 6)
III. Self Righteousness Expelled (Ch. 7:1-6)
IV. True Righteousness Explained (Ch. 7:7-27)

After spending the first 2+ chapters condemning us,
Jesus is now offering to us the salvation
That we have obviously not been able to achieve on our own.

And the means to achieving that righteousness is fairly simple.
Ask for it.
Matthew 7:7-8 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. “For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”

Becoming righteous in the sight of God is really that easy.
Jesus Christ came and died upon a cross,
Taking the penalty for all those who would call upon His name.

And through Him we can be justified before God if we simply ask to be.
It is a glorious truth.

If you want to see salvation from God’s perspective it is easy.
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

And here Jesus says just ask for it.
Romans 10:13 “for “WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.”

But as we said last week, it does not end there.
Now we have to determine if you’re the type of person who wants it.
Are you willing to ask?
Are you willing to seek?
Are you willing to knock?

And before you answer yes, you must understand something.
The path of God’s righteousness is not an easy path.

It is a small gate with a narrow road.
It is a path of self-sacrifice and endurance.

Which is why Jesus said next:
Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. “For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”
The problem is not that God’s righteousness is too hard to find.

The problem is that when given the choice
People choose the comforts and pleasures of this world
Over God’s righteousness.

They in effect walk away from God and His righteousness
Choosing instead to obtain the world.

They are the Rich Young Ruler who “gained the whole world and yet forfeited his soul”.

And according to Jesus most people make that decision.

The peculiar thing is that unlike the Rich Young Ruler
(who went away sad when He rejected Jesus)
Most people who make the same decision he made
Don’t even seem to realize they made the wrong decision.

Most people who are headed to destruction don’t even seem to realize it.

HOW COULD THAT BE?
How could it be that the “many” are wrong while only the “few” are correct?
How could it be that most people who think they are headed to heaven are not?

And the answer is simple.
BECAUSE THEY ARE DECEIVED

It is not that people are consciously choosing hell over heaven.
They have just been lied to.

Someone told them that the wide road would take them to heaven,
And they believed it.

And that is why immediately after telling us about the wide and narrow gates Jesus immediately gives this warning.

“Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves.”

These are the smooth talkers and snake oil salesmen
Who smile real big and say, “trust me” this path goes to heaven too.

And because they look good, and because they sound good,
People trust them and enter the wide gate and head blindly to destruction.

And so it is only right that after warning you about which path to choose
That Jesus would then warn you about which preacher to listen to.
This morning we listen as Jesus teaches us about “Spotting the Wolves”.

There are three points to be made in our text here.
#1 THE DANGER OF FALSE PROPHETS
Matthew 7:15a

“Beware of the false prophets”

There is an ACTUAL danger that we face in the world.
It is not a potential danger.
It is not a possible danger.

That danger is false prophets.
2 Peter 2:1-3 “But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned; and in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.”

The presence of false prophets is a very real danger.
They are not only in our world, they are in our country,
They are in our state, they are in our town, they are even in our churches.

When Paul visited with the Ephesian elders he told them:
Acts 20:28-30 “Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. “I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.”

Paul was speaking to the elders of the Ephesian church.
These were the leaders, and Paul even knew that it was highly possible
That even one of them was a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

It is a real danger and a real threat.
And Jesus said “Beware of the false prophets”

MEANING IT IS A DANGER TO BE WATCHFUL OF AT ALL TIMES.
Don’t ever drop your guard.
Don’t ever fall asleep on your watch.

It was while the hired hands slept that the enemy sowed the tares
And that is precisely how the false prophets work.

Now honestly, we don’t have time to go into as much detail
As I would like about false prophets in one sermon.

There is too much information regarding them in all of Scripture.
(I would suggest getting the CD’s on 2 Peter
Or listening to those sermons on the internet)
But I don’t think it’s wise to leave the subject untouched either.
So let me give you just a quick crash course
On what a false prophet is and what they do.

First – FALSE PROPHETS ARE NOT FROM GOD, AND THEY SERVE GOD’S PEOPLE NO BENEFIT.

Jeremiah 23:25-32 “I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy falsely in My name, saying, ‘I had a dream, I had a dream!’ “How long? Is there anything in the hearts of the prophets who prophesy falsehood, even these prophets of the deception of their own heart, who intend to make My people forget My name by their dreams which they relate to one another, just as their fathers forgot My name because of Baal? “The prophet who has a dream may relate his dream, but let him who has My word speak My word in truth. What does straw have in common with grain?” declares the LORD. “Is not My word like fire?” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer which shatters a rock? “Therefore behold, I am against the prophets,” declares the LORD, “who steal My words from each other. “Behold, I am against the prophets,” declares the LORD, “who use their tongues and declare, ‘The Lord declares.’ “Behold, I am against those who have prophesied false dreams,” declares the LORD, “and related them and led My people astray by their falsehoods and reckless boasting; yet I did not send them or command them, nor do they furnish this people the slightest benefit,” declares the LORD.

If there was one thing I could get through the minds
Of the church today it would be this.
THERE IS NO BENEFIT IN A FALSE PROPHET.

It is amazing how quickly the church will tolerate a preacher
Who doesn’t preach the truth simply because
He is “funny” or “uplifting” or “successful”.

I’ve heard people say about one preacher in particular, “I know he’s a false prophet, but I still like to listen to him.”

Friend, that is like saying,
“I know this arsenic isn’t Dr. Pepper, but I still like to drink it”

• They do not come from God.
• They do not speak from God.
• They speak from their own imagination.
• And they do not benefit anyone in the slightest way.

Jeremiah 27:14-15 “So do not listen to the words of the prophets who speak to you, saying, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon,’ for they prophesy a lie to you; for I have not sent them,” declares the LORD, “but they prophesy falsely in My name, in order that I may drive you out and that you may perish, you and the prophets who prophesy to you.”

And so you understand first and foremost that false prophets
Do not come from God, and they do not benefit anyone.

Secondly – FALSE PROPHETS WORK CONTRARY TO THE WILL OF GOD, BY ENCOURAGING THE WICKED, AND DISCOURAGING THE RIGHTEOUS
False prophets love to tell the wicked that they are fine in their sin.

Jeremiah 6:14 “They have healed the brokenness of My people superficially, Saying, ‘Peace, peace,’ But there is no peace.”

They take a people living in sin and convince them that they are ok.
It is the essence of false assurance.

God would have them repent, so that they would not be destroyed,
And yet the false prophets encourage them to do the opposite.

And not only do they encourage the wicked,
But they actually discourage the righteous.

Ezekiel 13:22-23 “Because you disheartened the righteous with falsehood when I did not cause him grief, but have encouraged the wicked not to turn from his wicked way and preserve his life, therefore, you women will no longer see false visions or practice divination, and I will deliver My people out of your hand. Thus you will know that I am the LORD.”
Their message emphasizes the insignificance of holy living
And thus seeks to steal the motivation of the righteous man.

Some false prophets can even shame the righteous.
They parade their wealth and worldly success as “blessings” from God
To the extent that the righteous man (who is blessed) feels abandoned.

Remember Asaph?
Psalms 73:13-14 “Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure And washed my hands in innocence; For I have been stricken all day long And chastened every morning.”

That is the type of effect false prophets have on people.

So they are not from God and they do not benefit anyone.
They encourage the wicked and discourage the righteous.
Thirdly – FALSE PROPHETS ARE LOVED BY THE WICKED AND YET DESTROYED BY GOD.

I tell you this, because you must understand that
Worldly popularity has never been an indicator of a true prophet.

You could almost argue the opposite to be true.
By today’s church growth standards
Only two prophets in the Old Testament had successful ministries.
Jonah – who got Ninevah to repent.
Haggai – who rebuilt the temple.

The rest seemed to fail miserable.
• Elijah had to flee for his life
• Elisha was mocked an old bald head
• Isaiah preached to deaf ears and hard hearts
• Jeremiah was thrown in a well and imprisoned
• Ezekiel was put on house arrest and roundly ignored
• Zechariah was killed between the altar and the temple
• John the Baptist was beheaded

The world hated the true prophets.
Matthew 5:11-12 “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

But the world loves the false prophets.
2 Timothy 4:3 “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires,”

Luke 6:26 “Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers used to treat the false prophets in the same way.”

And this means that there will always be a market for them.

It is not as though they are hated, and thus will be driven from existence,
In fact the opposite is true.

They are so loved and so successful in the world,
That if anything more are being enticed into service.

But just because the world loves them does not mean that God does.
In fact God will destroy them.

2 Peter 2:12 “But these, like unreasoning animals, born as creatures of instinct to be captured and killed, reviling where they have no knowledge, will in the destruction of those creatures also be destroyed,”

And so hopefully you see why it is imperative that you and I “Beware”

They are not from God and they do not benefit anyone
They encourage the wicked and discourage the righteous
They are loved by the world and rejected by God

They preach a false message, giving a false hope,
In order to secure eternal destruction.
AND THEY ARE HERE.

“Beware of the false prophets”

#2 THE DECEPTION OF FALSE PROPHETS
Matthew 7:15b

“who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves.”
Here Jesus gives two descriptions of a false prophet.
1) What he/she looks like on the outside
2) What he/she looks like on the inside

Outside – “come to you sheep’s clothing”

First notice the “come to you”
Sheep don’t go looking for wolves, wolves come looking for sheep.

And to help you understand,
Just know that a shepherd wore “sheep’s clothing”.

A false prophet does not dress up like a sheep,
He dresses up like a shepherd.

Matthew Henry said:
A Hypocrite – is a goat in sheep’s clothing.
A False Prophet – is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

We are here dealing with a false prophet.
And that means that they look the part.

2 Corinthians 11:13-15 “For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds.”

The false prophet dresses up like the shepherd.
WHY?
BECAUSE SHEEP FOLLOW THE SHEPHERD.

This was foundational as Jesus spoke of the good shepherd.
John 10:2-4 “But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep. “To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. “When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.”

Sheep follow the shepherd
And that is why the wolf dresses up like a shepherd.

By pretending to be a sheep he might devour another sheep,
But by pretending to be a shepherd he can devour them all.

He wants to lead them all to a place of destruction.
He wants to deceive them all.

Ezekiel 34:1-4 “Then the word of the LORD came to me saying, “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy and say to those shepherds, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “Woe, shepherds of Israel who have been feeding themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flock? “You eat the fat and clothe yourselves with the wool, you slaughter the fat sheep without feeding the flock. “Those who are sickly you have not strengthened, the diseased you have not healed, the broken you have not bound up, the scattered you have not brought back, nor have you sought for the lost; but with force and with severity you have dominated them.”
And you have to be careful there to make sure
You understand this parable in a spiritual sense, not a physical one.

“sickly” are not the physical sick, but the spiritual sick, those weak in sin.
“diseased” are those who have fallen into sin
“broken” are those who are reaping the consequences of that sin
“scattered” are those who are discouraged with no hope of deliverance
“lost” are those who are indeed without salvation

And the false shepherd didn’t do a thing for any of them.
The false shepherd let them stay in sin, let them reap it’s consequences,
And offered them no hope out of it.

He was not a deliverer, he was a destroyer.

He destroyed them because he wasn’t a shepherd he was a wolf.
“but inwardly are ravenous wolves.”

THEY COME TO DESTROY YOU.

It is these men who stand outside the wide gate and assure that it is ok.
(Leading the Buffalo off the jump)

They are promising you the way of escape and salvation,
But it is a lie, it will only lead to destruction.

The Danger of False Prophets The Deception of False Prophets
#3 THE DETECTION OF FALSE PROPHETS
Matthew 7:16-20

It would obviously have been pointless for Jesus to warn us
About false prophets if He didn’t tell us how to spot them.
AND THAT IS THE THRUST OF THIS PASSAGE

If you can’t trust appearances, and you can’t believe what they say, then how do you know if you are dealing with a false prophet?

And the answer is – THEIR FRUIT
Jesus wanted you and me to be fruit inspectors.

“You will know them by their fruits”

In other words, you are going to have to do your homework.
You are going to have to exercise some discernment.

1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 “But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil.”
And one way is obvious.
Isaiah 8:20 “To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn.”

We use God’s word to evaluate the accuracy of their message.

Galatians 1:6-9 “I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!”

But even you and I know that these men can be slick and tricky,
And so it is good to know how else we spot them.

We look at their fruit.
• Now fruit can be their words.
• Fruit can be their converts.
• Fruit can be their character.

And we examine them all.
• Does their message align with the truth of Scripture?
• Do their followers exhibit holiness and Christ-likeness?
• Is their life consistent with the message they preach?

We examine their fruit.
We look for Jesus in them.
Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”

James 3:13-18 “Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”

And I could give you many more examples
Of what I mean by fruit if we had the time.

Sometime read 2 Peter 2:10-22 and listen as Peter outlines their behavior.
They Revile Angelic Spirits (Brashness)
The Revel in Extravagance (Worldliness)
The Rant about Freedom (Seduction)
They Return to Sin (Like a dog to vomit)

Scripture is literally chalked full of examples of bad fruit.
But in our text here, Jesus doesn’t give specifics of fruit.
(Having the Sermon on the Mount ought to give you quite a few indicators)
Instead He wants you to know that judging fruit will work.

He is here endorsing the process of fruit inspection
As a way of spotting a false prophet.

And what He shows us is four reasons we can be certain
That we will know a false prophet by his/her fruit.
1) FRUIT IS EXCLUSIVE TO THE TREE (16)

And this is of course common sense.
If you want to find pecans, where do you go?
To a pecan tree.

If you want to find apples, you go to an apple tree.

Fruit is exclusive to the tree.
That means that if a tree is producing apples,
You can be 100% certain you are dealing with an apple tree.

Orange trees don’t produce apples.

And so it is with inspecting the fruit of a prophet,
Their fruit is exclusive to the type of person they are.

2) FRUIT IS ALWAYS PRESENT (17)

Jesus tells us that all trees bear fruit.
(In high school judging horticulture, we could identify 73 plants)

You don’t have to worry about a fruitless prophet
That is unable to be examined.
they all bear fruit, there will be something to evaluate.

3) FRUIT IS AN ACCURATE INDICATOR (18)

Furthermore fruit is honest and accurate.

You can nail an apple sign on a fig tree, but once it produces figs,
You will know what type of tree you have.

So it is with false prophets.
I don’t care how they dress, or how smooth they talk,
Sooner or later their fruit will accurately indicate who they are.

Peter speaks of their arrogance, or their greed, or their sexual immorality.

(We’ve seen it with TV Evangelists)
4) FRUIT IS GOD’S STANDARD (19)

And this may be the most important aspect of all.
God uses fruit as His criteria for evaluation and judgment.

Just read Isaiah 5 or John 15.
God looks at the fruit.
And based upon the fruit God issues judgment.

And so if fruit is the criteria that God uses,
Then we can rest assured that it is a verifiable standard.

If you judge a prophet by the same criteria God judges him by,
Then you can know you and God will always be on the same page.

And that is why Jesus closes in verse 20 by saying,
“So then, you will know them by their fruits.”

And the point to Jesus sermon here is clear.

False Prophets are Dangerous,
Because False Prophets are Deceptive,
But False Prophets can be Detected if you know what to look for.

I want to encourage you to heed Jesus’ warning.

There are many prophets today who will gladly
Usher you onto the wide road of, sin, comfort, and worldliness.
And they will tell you the whole time that you are bound for glory.

But before you listen to everything they say,
You had better examine their fruit.

Find one who will tell you what God says,
For only then will you find benefit.

Jeremiah 5:30-31 “An appalling and horrible thing Has happened in the land: The prophets prophesy falsely, And the priests rule on their own authority; And My people love it so! But what will you do at the end of it?”

Choosing Righteousness (Matthew 7:13-14)

Choosing Righteousness
Matthew 7:13-14

We’ve been studying through this Sermon on the Mount,
Jesus has dealt with the heart.

It has been a sermon chalked full of conviction and even condemnation.
It has systematically proven to me that I am not righteous.
And therefore this sermon has forced me into a plea for mercy.

But then last week we found some good news.

Jesus revealed that if I desire to be righteous,
All I have to do is ask for it.
And based upon the goodness of God, I will receive it.

And that is great news.

The only thing now that seems strange is that the sermon continues.
If that was the invitation, why does Jesus continue?
If He just told me to ask for righteousness, isn’t that where the service
ends?

I mean, that is how we do it.
We preach hard, we then give an invitation,
But if someone responds, we don’t preach anymore to them.

We shake their hand, tell them we are glad they joined,
And then do our best to beat them to Dairy Queen.

WHY IS JESUS STILL PREACHING?
Well, if you’ve ever read the gospels
You know that Jesus never ended with the invitation.

After giving the invitation
Jesus always proceeded to warn those who responded
About the hardships that were coming,
And what would be expected of them as followers.

Luke 9:57-62 “As they were going along the road, someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go.” And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” And He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” But He said to him, “Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God.” Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord; but first permit me to say good-bye to those at home.” But Jesus said to him, “No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

The point is that Jesus was not just interested in rather or not
You wanted to go to heaven. (That should be obvious.)
Jesus was interested in whether or not you would leave this world
And leave your sin to do so.

Jesus said if you want to be righteous, all you have to do is ask.
Now He wants to know if you are willing to suffer the consequences
Of living a righteous lifestyle.

Scripture doesn’t record many righteous people that lived all that easy.
Scripture actually promises difficulty to all who want to be righteous.

2 Timothy 3:12 “Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.”

Matthew 10:22 “You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.”

Matthew 10:24-25 “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master. “It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the head of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign the members of his household!”

What Scripture teaches is that if you display God’s righteousness
In the midst of this corrupt world you can expect persecution.

You see choosing to live righteously is a conscious choice
To quit pleasing the world and start pleasing God.

And you and I have to choose which that will be.
Jesus wasn’t just interested if you would choose to go to heaven.
Jesus wanted to know if you would choose Him over the world.

AND BELIEVE ME EVERYONE MUST MAKE THAT CHOICE

Throughout Scripture God always required you to choose.
Deuteronomy 30:19-20 “I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants, by loving the LORD your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days, that you may live in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.”

Joshua 24:13-15 “I gave you a land on which you had not labored, and cities which you had not built, and you have lived in them; you are eating of vineyards and olive groves which you did not plant.’ “Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. “If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

1 Kings 18:21 “Elijah came near to all the people and said, ” How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people did not answer him a word.”
And Jesus is no different, He also requires a choice.

And thus far the point is, that you cannot have it both ways.
When Jesus holds out His hand to you,
It is not an invitation to keep your old life and still go to heaven.

The invitation of Jesus is to leave everything behind to follow Him.
And you must choose which you will keep.

And to help you with that choice Jesus describes your options.

When we come to this point of the sermon we are at a crossroads,
And we must choose to take the gate on the left or the gate on the right.

You can’t walk through both, and you can’t stay where you are.

So this morning Jesus outlines for us what options you have.

#1 THE WAY OF THE WORLD
Matthew 7:13

The last time I preached this text I called it “Loop 666”
Because that is what this way of the world reminds me of.

If you take off to Lubbock this next week with SAMS as your destination, most of you will hit loop 289 and run around to SAMS.

WHY?
Because if you stay on 82 there is construction, there are stop lights,
The road is narrow, and the journey is more tedious.

But if you get on the loop, the road is wide, you can set your cruise,
There are not lights, it is a much easier travel.

Well that is what this road reminds me of.
It reminds me of the loop.

It is for all who seek to avoid the perceived hardships of Christianity.
“I want to go to heaven. I just don’t want to be too inconvenienced on my journey, so instead of enduring all that hard stuff, I’ll just get on the loop.”

AND DOESN’T THAT SEEM LIKE A GOOD IDEA?

But let’s look at what the loop really offers.
1) THE ENTRANCE
“for the gate is wide”

We see right off the bat why so many people choose this gate.
It’s real easy to enter through it.

Not only can you enter, but all your stuff can enter with you.
You can take your friends
You can take your family
You can take your stuff
You can take your sin

There is no initial cost.

And it is a popular notion today.

One of the most popular invitation choruses in the church today is called “Come Just As You Are” (I won’t let Leo sing it)

“Come just as you are, hear the Spirit call.
Come and see, come receive, come and live forever.
Life everlasting, and strength for today, taste the living water that never flows away.”

I can’t imagine anyone rejecting such an invitation.

It is a song catering to the wide gate concept.
You can come to Jesus, and you don’t have to change a thing.

This is FIRE INSURANCE. Jesus as Savior, but not Lord.

They don’t really want to change their lifestyle,
Or give up their sin, or make any sacrifices,
they just want to go to heaven.

This is the road of PROFESSION, not the road of CONFESSION.

What does it mean to profess?
It means to make a claim about something.
There are many who make the claim that Jesus is Lord.

What does it mean to confess?
Confession only takes place when you reveal something that you’ve done.
To confess that He is your Lord, not that He is the Lord.

One who professes calls Jesus Lord.
One who confesses obeys Jesus as Lord.

AND THE WIDE GATE IS PERFECT FOR ONE WHO ONLY PROFESSES,
BECAUSE IT REQUIRES NOTHING OF SACRIFICIAL OBEDIENCE.

The Wide Gate has an EASY ENTRANCE
2) THE TRAVEL
“and the way is broad”
You see, this road isn’t a narrow highway, this baby is a four laner.
It is easy travel.

It doesn’t promise any difficulties, it doesn’t promise any setbacks.
All it requires of you is to put your car on cruise control,
And next stop heaven.

The loop doesn’t travel through any persecution points
There are not places where you can’t see the road clearly.

People love this road, because it is very easy.

Let me ask you a question.

If I told you, all you have to do is make a public profession of faith,
And then just don’t do anything too awful bad for the rest of your life,
And you’ll go to heaven, would you accept it?

I hope not, because it’s a lie.
The sad thing is, many people do accept it.

John MacArthur talks about this way, “The way that is broad is the easy, attractive, inclusive, indulgent, permissive, and self-oriented way of the world. There are few rules, few restrictions, and few requirements. All you need to do is profess Jesus, or at least be religious, and you are readily accepted in that large and diverse group. Sin is tolerated, truth is moderated, and humility is ignored. God’s Word is praised but not studied, and His standards are admired but not followed. This way requires no spiritual maturity, no moral character, no commitment, and no sacrifice. It is the easy way of floating downstream, in the “course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience” (Eph. 2:2). It is the tragic way “which seems right to a man,” but whose “end is the way of death” (Prov. 14:12).” (MacArthur, John; MacArthur New Testament Commentary Series: Matthew 1-7, Moody Press, Chicago, Illinois, 1985; 454-455)

That accurately sums up the wide road.
It is for those who want no sacrifice and no hardship.

It’s Entrance is Easy, It’s Travel is effortless.
3) THE DESTINATION
“that leads to destruction”

I’ll admit, the wide gate sure looks like the one to take.
So why not take it?
Because it doesn’t go where it says.

HERE IS THE PART YOU NEED TO KNOW

Hanging outside the wide gate is a sign.
It does not say “The road to Destruction” (who would travel it?)
It says, “The Road to Heaven”
That sign was hung by the false prophets we will study next week,
Those wolves in sheep’s clothing.

It is those of whom Peter said:
2 Peter 2:2-3 “Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned; and in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.”

They come telling people what they want to hear in order to make a profit.
And through their perversion they malign the way of the truth.

Put another way, they hand a deceptive sign over their door.
They promise freedom while they are enslaved.
They promise salvation while they are lost.
And they claim that their road leads to heaven, when it actually leads to hell.

THE FACT IS THIS ROAD LEADS TO HELL.
It may be easy to enter. It may be easy to travel.
BUT IT DOES NOT GO WHERE IT SAYS

Someone may come and tell you that all you have to do
Is ask Jesus into your heart and then go about your business
And you will go to heaven.
BUT IF SOMEONE TOLD YOU THAT, THEY LIED TO YOU.

We’re good at saying Jesus is the only way.
John 14:6 “I am the way and the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father, but by Me.”
But let me tell you, it has to be His way,
Not just the generic way that you put His name on.

Paul was afraid the Corinthians were being deceived in this way.

2 Corinthians 11:3-4 “But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ. For if one comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted, you bear this beautifully.”

Don’t buy in to a generic plan that someone put Jesus name on,
And said it will work because Jesus is the way.
Let Jesus speak for Himself, and follow the way He ordained.

Matthew 10:34-39 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. “For I came to SET A MAN AGAINST HIS FATHER, AND A DAUGHTER AGAINST HER MOTHER, AND A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AGAINST HER MOTHER-IN-LAW; and A MAN’S ENEMIES WILL BE THE MEMBERS OF HIS HOUSEHOLD. “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. “And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. “He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.”
His way is total submission to Him. His way is following Him.
Any other way is not the way to heaven,
No matter what the sign on the gate says.

The Entrance is Easy, The Travel is Effortless, The Destination is Hell
4) THE POPULARITY
“and there are many who enter through it.”

This is the sad part about the wide gate.
There are a lot of people who take that route.
Because it looks so easy.

People love the world and so they choose it

And the sad reality is that this road is flooded with people
Who think they are going to heaven, but they really aren’t.

Chad Stubblefield once made a great statement.
“The Church is alive and well. It’s just not as big as we think.”

That’s because according to this Scripture,
Most of the people that are attending our church services
Are on the wide road that leads to destruction.

That is why when it gets difficult, most will fall away.
Matthew 24:9-13 “Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name. “At that time many will fall away and will betray one another and hate one another. “Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many. “Because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold. “But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved.”

AND YET MOST PEOPLE TRAVEL THIS ROAD
Luke 13:22-28 “And He was passing through from one city and village to another, teaching, and proceeding on His way to Jerusalem. And someone said to Him, “Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?” And He said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. “Once the head of the house gets up and shuts the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, ‘ Lord, open up to us!’ then He will answer and say to you, ‘ I do not know where you are from.’ “Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets’; and He will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you are from; DEPART FROM ME, ALL YOU EVILDOERS.’ “In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out.”

Most people seek to maintain this life and as a result they forfeit eternity.

Luke 16:16-17 “Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John; since that time the gospel of the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it. “But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter of the Law to fail.”

The point is that there are all sorts of people
Trying to force their way into heaven
By changing the standard or rewriting the rules, but they won’t succeed.

That road is popular, but it still leads to hell.

BUT THERE IS ONE OPTION FOR YOU.
You can take the road of ease and comfort, and you will even be popular when you travel it. But it will only take you to hell.

The first thing we saw is the way of the world.
#2 THE WAY OF GOD
Matthew 7:14

We will have to give some characteristics of it as well.

1) THE ENTRANCE
“for the gate is small”

The small gate is different from the wide gate.
You can’t go easily through it.
You have to go through it naked.

Your sin won’t fit, the world won’t fit,
You can’t walk through with anyone else.
You have to go it alone, with nothing.

Isn’t this what Jesus taught?
Matthew 13:44-46 “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.”

It is a small gate, and before you can enter,
You are gonna have to repent of the sin you are carrying,
And lay it all down, and go through without it.

It is a difficult entrance
2) THE TRAVEL
“and the way is narrow”

Jesus never promised the road of a Christian would be easy,
In fact He promised just the opposite.
He only promised He would walk with you.

Unlike the loop, this road goes downtown.
Where the road is narrow.
Where the danger is.
Where the visibility is not so good.
This road will require you to walk by faith, not by sight.

It takes a lot of dedication and endurance to travel this road
But you see, that is the way Jesus expects it to be.
Because the one who will travel that road,
And stay with it until the end, that is one of His.

Matthew 10:22 “You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.”

John 16:2 “They will make you outcasts from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God.”

This is not some easy road to travel, it is a marathon.

Hebrews 12:1-2 “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

When Jesus says “Follow Me”, He isn’t talking about Heaven.
Jesus is asking you to follow Him to the cross.

That’s what is interesting about the sign on this gate.
Wide gate = THE ROAD TO HEAVEN
Narrow gate = THE ROAD TO THE CROSS

Matthew 10:38-39 “And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. “He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.”

Jesus didn’t take the easy road. If you want to follow, you can’t either.

3) THE DESTINATION
“that leads to life”

It isn’t an easy path to travel, but it is worth it,

You see unlike the wide road, all your comfort is here.
On this path your comfort is for all eternity.

And if you are willing to forsake this life to follow Jesus,
Then this life may be harsh, but the next one will not be.

Revelation 21:3-4 “And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.”

AND THAT PLACE IS EXCLUSIVE TO THE NARROW ROAD TRAVELERS.
PEOPLE ON THE WIDE ROAD WILL NEVER BE THERE.

You don’t choose this path because it is easy here,
You choose it because it is better there.

Matthew 16:24-27 “Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? “For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and WILL THEN REPAY EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS.”

4) THE POPULARITY
“and there are few who find it.”

NOT MANY FIND IT. – They want the easy way.

Does it not alarm you that most of the people who think they are going to heaven aren’t?
Does it not alarm you that only a few who claim to have eternal life actually have it?

There are many who claim to have eternal life
While still living for themselves in this world.

Yet there are only a few who have truly sold out for Jesus.
They have asked for righteousness and are willing to live in it.
They will accept the consequences and follow Jesus.

They may be headed to heaven, but first they are headed to the cross.
THAT IS WHAT THEY CHOSE.

JESUS PREACHED THIS SERMON TO MAKE YOU CHOOSE.

You can have righteousness if you ask for it.
But before you ask for it, you had better know what you are asking for.
It is not a life of ease, but it is eternity with God.

AND OBVIOUSLY WE KNOW WHICH TO CHOOSE.
“What would a man give in exchange for his own soul?”

Don’t be deceived by some sort of social Christianity,
But today choose to follow Jesus no matter the cost.

Deuteronomy 30:19 “I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants,”

Logs, Dogs, & Hogs (Matthew 7:1-6)

Logs, Dogs, & Hogs
Matthew 7:1-6

Well, last week we sort of opened the door
On this infamous and often quoted passage.

What is clear is that Jesus clearly commanded “Do not judge”.

What is apparently unclear to most of those who quote it
Is exactly what Jesus was talking about when He forbade it.

For the same Jesus who said here “Do not judge”

Also said in
John 7:24 “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

And also said to expel the immoral brother.
And also said to recognize false prophets by their fruit

And when you couple those truths with the fact that in 1 Corinthians
Paul told us that we do indeed judge those within the church.

We quickly understand that Jesus was not condemning
Any and all sense of confrontation amongst people.

In fact you remember as we laid the ground work last week for this text
We said that Scriptures seems to indicate three types of judgment.

1) WICKED JUDGEMENT THAT ONLY DESTROYS
Condemns based upon opinions and motives.
Condemns to make self look better.
Condemns solely to destroy.

2) BLIND JUDGEMENT THAT ONLY DECEIVES
Love to confront sin in others.
Can’t see sin in their own lives.
Obviously can’t clearly see anyone else’s sin either.
Only judgments given are faulty and deceptive.

3) TRUE JUDGEMENT THAT ONLY DELIVERS
Spoken of in 1 Corinthians 5 & Matthew 18
Demonstrated by Jesus (especially in John 8)
Purpose was to shame to repentance and thus deliver a brother.

We learn that judgment can be a good thing when done correctly,
Or it can be a horrible thing when corrupted.

And we also understand what kind of judgment
Jesus was talking about here in Matthew 7.

Jesus is confronting both wicked and blind judgment.

And the reason He confronts them here in the Sermon on the Mount
Is because these are both indicators of self-righteousness.

NOTHING INDICATES THE PRESENCE OF SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS
MORE THAN A CORRUPTED JUDGMENTAL SPIRIT

• If a person is unaware of any of their own flaws and can only see the flaws of others…
• Or if a person is only interested in tearing others down that he might look good…
You can be certain that self-righteousness exists.

And Jesus is in this text EXPELLING SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS

He is here making the obvious observation
That self-righteousness is a major problem of mankind,
As evidenced by their corrupt judgment of one another.

And now that we have laid that groundwork last week,
This morning I want to get into this text a little more
And bring some insight through what Jesus said here.

What we see in our text this morning are three concepts about judgment.
#1 THE DANGER OF WICKED JUDGMENT
Matthew 7:1-2

Last week we talked about what wicked judgment looks like.

It was pictured in Romans 14 by those who condemned a brother
Simply because he ate different food than you did.

What the brother was doing was not sin, it was a matter of preference,
It was a matter of opinion, and Paul said
It was nothing short of wickedness to condemn your brother over it.

Such judging was only serving to destroy the church of God.

That was wicked judgment.

Here in our text Jesus shows us the danger of this wicked judgment.

“Do not judge so that you will not be judged.”

First off we notice that the main reason Jesus commands us not to judge
Is to protect someone; WHO?

“you”
He doesn’t tell you not to judge in order to protect those you judge.
He tells you not to judge in order to help you protect yourself.

So first and foremost you must understand that
Judging puts someone in immediate danger,
And that is the person who does the judging.

And that danger is even articulated here as Jesus says,
“so that you will not be judged.”

The implication is that the person who judges will be judged.
The person who condemns another will himself be condemned.

And let’s take it a little further to see why.

“For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.”

Now notice here that Jesus indicates two attributes
About the way you judge another.

He speaks of “the way” you judge.
He speaks of “the standard of measure” you use.

And so let’s talk about each of those this morning.

FIRST
“the way you judge”

Perhaps the biggest problem with the judgment of Israel,
And even with the judgment of mankind is not that we judge,
But “the way” we judge.

For a better understanding of what Jesus is referring to,
Just look at Luke’s gospel.

Luke 6:35-37 “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men. “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. “Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned.”

Jesus is obviously referring to judgment without mercy.

And Jesus insinuates that judgment is present because mercy is not.

And of course you will remember that is one of the key differences
Between wicked judgment and true judgment.

True judgment always looked to the redemption of a fallen brother.
Wicked judgment was without mercy and looked to destroy him.

And that is a horrible way to judge.

We remember from last week studying Matthew 18 and Jesus teaching that if your brother sins:

• You first go to him in private.
• Then you take 2 or 3 with you.
• Then you tell it to the church.
• Then you disfellowship him.

And each one of those was meant to be a check point where your brother
Could repent without any further embarrassment or punishment.

And the best circumstance would be if you privately
Went to your brother and he repented
And no one else ever had to know.

It was a merciful and wonderful act of deliverance.

James 5:19-20 “My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.”

And that is THE WAY in which Jesus said we should judge.

Yet commonly we do it exactly wrong.
Instead of going privately to the brother
And using public disclosure as an extreme measure.

We tend to tell everyone else first, and very rarely ever go to the brother.

It is judgment, but what is the purpose?
IT IS JUDGMENT DONE THE WRONG WAY.

It is judgment without mercy.
James 2:13 “For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.”

IT IS AN EXTREME PICTURE OF SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS.
It is the picture of a man who doesn’t care about his brother,
He only cares that others see him as a righteous man who hates sin.

He was only out to condemn, and certainly felt qualified to do so.

And Jesus says:
If you judge in that way, then you will be judged in that way.

Because your lack of mercy indicates a self-righteous heart
And God will judge a self-righteous heart without mercy.

God is opposed to the proud yet gives grace to the humble.

Remember the beatitude?
Matthew 5:7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.”

The point is if you are so proud that you can
Willingly condemn another without mercy,
Then rest assured that you are self-righteous
And you yourself will be condemned by God.

“For in the way you judge, you will be judged”

And that is not all.

SECOND
“by your standard of measure”

WHAT IS THIS?

It indicates how strict you are in regard to your judgment.

Now we know that sin is clearly condemned in Scripture.
And if a person is sinning, then it really doesn’t matter why.
That is God’s standard, not ours.

Our standard comes in to play
When we want to take God’s standards to new extremes.

Anytime we judge someone for something that God does not.

For example:
Eating meat or not eating meat.
Worshiping on Sunday or another day.

It can also be seen any time we judge the motives of a man.

CAN ANYONE IN HERE SEE THE HEART?

You can’t say, “Well they came to church, but I know why they were there.”
You can’t say, “Well they just gave to get tax relief.”

The fact is you don’t know.
(side note: most relational squabbles I deal with involve motive judging)

Now, if what they do is sinful, then motives don’t matter.
If a man sleeps with another man’s wife, motive is irrelevant, it’s wrong.
But when what they do is not sinful, and you judge them
Based upon speculation that is pretty severe.

And that again is an indicator of self-righteousness.
In fact you have viewed yourself even more righteous than God.
For you condemned someone that God didn’t even condemn.

And again, your self-righteousness will be judged by God.
Your desire to condemn will be measured to you.
“by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.”

NEED AN ILLUSTRATION?
TURN TO: MATTHEW 18:21-35

If you judge someone without mercy and by a severe standard,
Then rest assured you will be judged by God the same way.

And so we see THE DANGER OF WICKED JUDGMENT.

It is not dangerous for them, it is dangerous for you.
It reveals a merciless self-righteous heart which God will surely judge.

The Danger of Wicked Judgment
#2 THE DAMAGE OF BLIND JUDGMENT
Matthew 7:3-5

Here we are still on the concept of forbidden judgment.

There is also blind judgment.

Blind judgment is that hypocritical type of judgment
That is OBVIOUSLY BLIND because it cannot see it’s own sin.
It only sees the sin in the lives of others.

That is judgment without knowledge.
That is judgment without discernment.
That is blind judgment.

Jesus condemns that as well because of the damage it causes.

“Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?”

Here is a man with a massive beam sticking out of his eye,
And yet he has the audacity to recognize a splinter in the eye of another.

The implication is that he couldn’t possibly have seen the splinter,
Because his judgment was far too impeded.
That is why Jesus says, “Or HOW can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye?”

How could you possible think that you are qualified to perform eye surgery when you can’t see?

And honestly, how many of you would agree to let a blind doctor root around in your eye for a splinter?

You know, he will cause more damage than he will good.

Luke 6:39-42a “And He also spoke a parable to them: “A blind man cannot guide a blind man, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit? “A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher. “Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? “Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye?”

If someone is going to remove the speck from your eye,
Then you want it to be someone who is seeing clearly.

SO BEFORE YOU START PERFORMING EYE SURGERY,
MAKE SURE YOU SEE CLEARLY.

Anything else is spiritual mal-practice.

IF YOU START TRYING TO JUDGE WHILE BLIND,
YOU WILL DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD.

LET ME GIVE YOU ANOTHER EXAMPLE
Matthew 13:24-30 “Jesus presented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. “But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went away. “But when the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the tares became evident also. “The slaves of the landowner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ “And he said to them, ‘An enemy has done this!’ The slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?’ “But he said, ‘No; for while you are gathering up the tares, you may uproot the wheat with them. ‘Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into my barn.”‘”

Now first we need to evaluate the discernment of the servants.
• They obviously had no discernment to protect form the invasion of tares.
• They apparently had no discernment as to who planted the tares.
• And yet now they wanted to go on a wild tare hunt.

To which Jesus said:
“No, for while you are gathering up the tares, you may uproot the wheat with them.”
It wasn’t that the tares were good, or that God would allow them to stay.

It was just that the servants obviously had no business being the judge
Because they had the discernment of a mole.

When they should have been repenting, they were trying to judge.

“You hypocrite first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.”

Please notice that Jesus never intended
To allow that speck to remain in the brother’s eye.

That speck was sinful too.
Jesus wanted it gone.

Jesus wanted true judgment.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH I AM DOING?
John 5:30 “I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”

There was no selfishness in Jesus’ judgment.
He just wanted to do what pleased God.

And this is the type of judgment we must have.
A judgment that sees all sin as the problem, even our own.
A judgment that declares war on sin, not sinners.

Make sure you see clearly before you attack other people’s sin.

The Danger of Wicked Judgment
The Damage of Blind Judgment
#3 THE DISCERNMENT OF TRUE JUDGMENT
Matthew 7:6

Now you notice that Jesus actually hinted at true judgment
There at the end of verse 5.

“first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.”

But what we notice here is that even those with true judgment
Must exercise discernment about it.

“Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pears before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.”

Now we know from last week what true judgment looks like.

It examines self first, and then confronts a brother for their sin,
With the intent of helping that brother find deliverance.
(We saw that in 1 Corinthians 5)

But let me remind you of something else Paul said in that passage.
1 Corinthians 5:9-13 “I wrote you in my letter not to associate with immoral people; I did not at all mean with the immoral people of this world, or with the covetous and swindlers, or with idolaters, for then you would have to go out of the world. But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler — not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church? But those who are outside, God judges. REMOVE THE WICKED MAN FROM AMONG YOURSELVES.”

Judge those within the church.

However, there are those outside that we do not judge,
God judges them.

And this is what Jesus is referring to here.
The reference to “dogs” and “swine”
Is a reference to the unclean Gentiles.

They were the wicked outside of the church.
They don’t claim to love God.
They don’t pretend to love God.
They could care less about God’s Laws.

AND EVEN BEYOND THAT,
THEY ARE THOSE WHO ARE OBSTINATE TO THE GOSPEL

Pigs and Dogs were both menaces and unclean.
A pig didn’t know what to do with pearls.
A dog didn’t know what to do with consecrated meat.

SO DON’T GIVE IT TO THEM.

And the picture here is that there are those in the world who,
Even after hearing the gospel, don’t want anything to do with it.

And it won’t do you any good to continue trying to evaluate their life.
They won’t value your assistance.
They won’t listen to your warnings.

You might as well give a strand of pearls to a pig.

SO DON’T KEEP BEATING A DEAD HORSE.

Proverbs 9:7-12 “He who corrects a scoffer gets dishonor for himself, And he who reproves a wicked man gets insults for himself. Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you, Reprove a wise man and he will love you. Give instruction to a wise man and he will be still wiser, Teach a righteous man and he will increase his learning. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you. If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, And if you scoff, you alone will bear it.”

In those moments you must have enough discernment
To know that now is not the time.

Remember when Jesus sent out the disciples?
Matthew 10:12-15 “As you enter the house, give it your greeting. “If the house is worthy, give it your blessing of peace. But if it is not worthy, take back your blessing of peace. “Whoever does not receive you, nor heed your words, as you go out of that house or that city, shake the dust off your feet. “Truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.”

Remember what Jesus said about His parables?
Matthew 13:10-13 “And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?” Jesus answered them, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted. “For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him. “Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.”

Jesus told us to stop, to do so anyway still exhibits arrogance.
Are you really going to save those who Jesus couldn’t?

The point is that our judgment is a tool of God
To rescue a wayward brother,
Not one to puff up ourselves or use to fight the dogs.

AND LET’S BRING IT ALL TO A CLOSE

When we judge to condemn – we are indicating a lack of mercy.
When we judge while in sin – we are indicating self-righteousness.
When we judge those Jesus couldn’t save – we are indicating arrogance.

AND THESE MUST GO,
FOR GOD WILL JUDGE THOSE THINGS IN OUR LIVES.

Friend it’s time for a little self-evaluation.

2 Corinthians 13:5 “Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you — unless indeed you fail the test?”

It does you no good to assume you’re fine and move on to judging others.
YOU MUST BE WILLING TO RECOGNIZE THE SIN IN YOUR OWN LIFE.

AND YOU MUST DEAL WITH IT FIRST
FOR THE SELF-RIGHTEOUS WILL BE JUDGED BY GOD.

Luke 18:9-14 “And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. “The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. ‘I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’ “But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ “I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Don’t be like that tax collector.
Get real with God and let Him show you yourself.

And then cry out to Jesus.

How to Be Righteous (Matthew 7:7-12)

How To Be Righteous
Matthew 7:7-12

Here we are again at the Sermon on the Mount,
And it is extremely honest to say that this is a very convicting sermon.

I can’t imagine anyone being able to listen to this sermon
And walk away feeling good about themselves.

I have yet to find a single verse in the entire sermon
That made me feel good about myself.

For which of the beatitudes can I claim to have mastered?
– Poor in spirit?
– Mourning over sin?
– Meekness?
– Hungering for Righteousness?
– Pure in heart?

Which of the missionary endeavors can I claim to have mastered?
– Can I honestly claim to be light?
– Can I honestly claim to be salt?

Which of the heart conditions don’t effect me?
– Can I honestly claim to never struggle with anger?
– Or lust?
– Or deception?
– Or commitment?
– Or loving my enemy?

Which of the religious functions can I claim to do well all the time?
– Can I say my motives in giving are always pure?
– How about my prayer life?
– Can I even claim to fast, let alone do it correctly?

And how about my love for the world?
– Can I honestly claim to have fully crucified the world to myself?
– Can I honestly claim to be fully free of greed or worry?
– Can I honestly say I always seek first the kingdom of heaven?

And how about my self-righteousness?
– Is my sin always the first I notice?
– Have I never set myself up as judge over another?

And before long I realize that this sermon has nailed me to the floor.

If I set down at the feet of the Master hoping to hear a sermon
That told me how good I was, then I am severely disappointed.

Because all Jesus has done to this point is show me that
I am anything but righteous, and God is the last person I am like.

If I put it another way, I could simply say, by my own merit:
I AM NOT RIGHTEOUS

I have proven the statements:
Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”

Romans 3:10-18 “as it is written, “THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.” “THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE, WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING,” “THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS”; “WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS”;”THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD, DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS, AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN.” “THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES.”

Isaiah 64:6 “For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.”

And this fact grieves me even more
When I contemplate other truths of Scripture:

Psalms 15 “O LORD, who may abide in Your tent? Who may dwell on Your holy hill? He who walks with integrity, and works righteousness, And speaks truth in his heart. He does not slander with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor takes up a reproach against his friend; In whose eyes a reprobate is despised, But who honors those who fear the LORD; He swears to his own hurt and does not change; He does not put out his money at interest, Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things will never be shaken.”

Isaiah 33:13-16 “You who are far away, hear what I have done; And you who are near, acknowledge My might.” Sinners in Zion are terrified; Trembling has seized the godless. “Who among us can live with the consuming fire? Who among us can live with continual burning?” He who walks righteously and speaks with sincerity, He who rejects unjust gain And shakes his hands so that they hold no bribe; He who stops his ears from hearing about bloodshed And shuts his eyes from looking upon evil; He will dwell on the heights, His refuge will be the impregnable rock; His bread will be given him, His water will be sure.”

The fact that I am not righteous only grieves me further
When I come to grips with the fact that
Only the righteous will spend eternity with God.

And when I go looking for bible characters to compare myself to,
The only one I can find is the tax collector in the temple
Who beats his breast and says, “God be merciful to me the sinner.”

You see thus far all the Sermon on the Mount has done
Is unequivocally proven to us that we do not measure up to God.

We are not righteous.

Which brings us to our next and most obvious question.
HOW CAN I BE RIGHTEOUS?

• It is apparent that I have fallen short of God’s mark
• It is apparent that I have made a mockery of God’s commands
• It is apparent that I have offended God in every possible way
How can I possibly make it right?
How can I be righteous?

And this is the most mind-blowing fact in all of Scripture.

God listens to sinners asking how to be made righteous,
And the response of God is this: JUST ASK

If you want forgiveness, just ask for it.
If you want righteousness, just ask for it.

You see we have concluded the conviction portion of this sermon.
• God’s Righteousness Examined
• False Righteousness Exposed
• Self Righteousness Expelled

Now we get to the final point of Jesus sermon.
TRUE RIGHTEOUSNESS EXPLAINED

That is Jesus is now explaining to you and I
How to have the true righteousness of God in our lives.
And the answer is: JUST ASK

This is now the invitation portion of this great sermon,
And so let’s look at it together.

#1 THE PROMISE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
Matthew 7:7-8

It is truly an amazing truth that is here revealed to us.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”

Now obviously we know this is not
God promising to be a genie in a bottle.

For example:
We just finished talking about the danger of greed
And the warning not to seek wealth.

So we know Jesus us not saying “Ask for money and it will be given to you; seek, for money and you will find it; knock on the door of the vault, and it will be opened to you.”
Obviously Jesus has something specific in mind
That we are to ask for, seek, and knock to receive.

BUT WHAT IS IT?

This is where we find tremendous help from other portions of Scripture:

TURN TO: LUKE 11:5-13

And from that story we understand that Jesus is speaking about prayer,
But not just prayer for any and everything.

Jesus concludes with this statement:
(13) “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”

Jesus is not just talking about asking for anything,
He is talking about asking for “the Holy Spirit”

He is talking about asking for righteousness.
He is talking about asking for salvation.

And the point is obvious.
If you have come to grips with your sin and wickedness before God
But you now want to be righteous, then ask for it.

“Ask”, “Seek”, “Knock”

And focus on those for just a moment, because they indicate to us
The various degrees we may have to go to

“Ask”
This implies that the thing you want is right in front of you
And readily available.

And some have certainly found righteousness to be that easy.

Matthew was just sitting in his tax booth
When Jesus walked by and said, “Follow Me”

And this is the way it was for many of us.
Raised in a Christian home
Carried to church every possible opportunity
Taught Bible stories at a young age

We didn’t have to look far for righteousness
Our mommas were cramming it down our throats.

And for some it is really that easy.

Some have to “Seek”
This implies that the righteousness is available,
But it is not right in front of you.

You might have to go find it yourself.

I’m reminded here of Zaccheus climbing that sycamore tree to see Jesus.
I’m remind of the wise men traveling from the east.

And there are some like this today.
Maybe their parents aren’t Christians.
Maybe they never got taken to church.

It’s there, but to get it you have to seek it.

Some have to “Knock”
Righteousness is still readily available, but you may have to overcome a few obstacles in order to find it.

Like the four friends who had to tear a hole in a roof to get to Jesus.
Like the Canaanite woman who had to endure rejection.

And I think about people raised in Islamic nations
Or people raised in Hindu nations
Or people raised in atheist nations

For them the journey to righteousness will require
Pushing through some apparent barriers.

But the point is that even though we seek
Through varying degrees of difficulty and opposition,
Those who ask, seek, and knock are all successful.

(8) “For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”

You may indeed have to search a little harder than someone else,
But the promise is if you will seek, you will find.

“everyone who asks receives”

Romans 10:13 “for “WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.”

Jeremiah 29:13 “You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.”

I know it sounds like a gimmick
I know it sounds like a trick
I know it sounds too good to be true
But straight from the mouth of Jesus,
If you have recognized your sinful state before God,
And yet desire to be righteous, then ask Him for it.

Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”

Righteousness is promised to all who will ask.

The Promise of Righteousness
#2 THE PROVIDER OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
Matthew 7:9-11

Now I don’t know about you, but I know that I am just enough of a pessimist to not yet be fully convinced.

I’ve often said I’m a little like Thomas
John 14:4-5 “And you know the way where I am going.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?”

And sometimes when you hear a promise that is too good to be true,
Like the one we just read it brings out a little pessimism in us.
What if I ask in the wrong way?
What if I seek in the wrong place?
What if I knock on the wrong door?

I mean God, you don’t realize all the ways that I could mess this up
And still fail to get the righteousness I so desperately want.

Well, take courage dear pessimist, and notice WHY
Righteousness is guaranteed to those who ask, seek, and knock.

Jesus just said that if you ask you will receive it.

Here He explains why.
(9) “Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? Of if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he?”

Now here we just exercise a little common sense.
We may like to aggravate our children a little,
But we would never feed them rocks instead of bread,
Or give them a snake instead of a fish.

We like to give good gifts to our children.

(11) “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!”
Did you catch that?

We are “evil” and yet even we know what is good.

And come on now, we know this is the case.

Suppose you are at home and one of your kids
Comes up and asks for a loaf of bread.

How might you respond?
You might say, “In a minute” (my time is more important than your hunger)
You might say, “Get it yourself” (I don’t care enough to get off the couch)
You might say, “Do without” (I don’t want to spend the money)
You might say, “Ask your mother” (which is a combination of all three)

Why do we respond like that?
Because we are selfish, and lazy, and greedy.

Face it, man is evil.

Yet even an evil man will eventually give what is good.
And if evil man will do it, how much further would God go?

You see, where man is evil, we also know that God is good.
(I miss Eldon, he always said that)

Psalms 86:5 “For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in lovingkindness to all who call upon You.”

Psalms 100:5 “For the LORD is good; His lovingkindness is everlasting And His faithfulness to all generations.”

And the Bible promises that this good God
Gives what is good to those He loves.

James 1:17 “Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.”

Psalms 34:10 “The young lions do lack and suffer hunger; But they who seek the LORD shall not be in want of any good thing.”

Psalms 84:11-12 “For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD gives grace and glory; No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly. O LORD of hosts,
How blessed is the man who trusts in You!”

I mean you get the point.
God is good and so He gives.

AND HERE IS WHY THAT MATTERS

You receiving righteousness is not based upon your ability to ask for it.
You receiving righteousness is not based upon your ability to seek for it.
You receiving righteousness is not based upon your ability to knock for it.

If that were the case, then salvation would be more available to:
• Slick salesmen who know how to ask.
• Private detectives who know how to seek.
• Jehovah’s witnesses who know how to knock

But righteousness is not given based on your ability to do those things.
I mean you could ask the devil for righteousness, but he won’t give it.

RIGHTEOUSNESS IS GUARANTEED
BECAUSE THE GOD WHO GIVES IT IS GOOD.

Righteousness is guaranteed because God likes to give it.
Regardless of how good they are at asking.

And this is foundational stuff.
Romans 4:1-8 “What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.” Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: “BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN, AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED. “BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT.”

1 Corinthians 1:26-31 “For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God. But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, “LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD.”

We don’t earn it
We don’t achieve it
We don’t deserve it
God gives it

We even have a fancy word for it, we call it grace.
(you getting what you don’t deserve)

Ephesians 2:1-10 “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”

God gives righteousness to those who want it.

He is able to give it because Jesus purchased it
Having paid the ransom for sin on the cross.

That is why everyone who asks receives.

The Promise of Righteousness The Provider of Righteousness
#3 THE PROOF OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
Matthew 7:12

We just read Ephesians 2:10
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”

What that reminded us of is that there is an expectation
That comes with the righteousness God gives.

He does not require you to earn righteousness,
But He does require you to practice righteousness.

Notice:
“In everything therefore…”

WHAT IS THE “therefore” THERE FOR?

It is there because Jesus is tying it back
To the previous statements on achieving righteousness.

He is pointing out that God expects you to display
And use the righteousness He freely gives.

And Jesus even explains what it should look like:
(12) “In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you,”

You and I know it as “The Golden Rule”

Philippians 2:3 “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves;”

Romans 12:10 “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor;”
It is the simple truth that you and I should love our neighbor as ourselves.

And not just in some things, but “In everything”

What you and I must realize is that
Selfishness is the opposite of godliness.

That is why in order to follow Jesus we are told to “deny self”
And that is precisely what God did in sending His Son to save us.

And that is what makes treating others
The way you want to be treated a fruit of genuine righteousness.

In fact Jesus says, “for this is the Law and the Prophets.”

All the righteousness that they command.
All the righteousness that they demonstrate.
All the righteousness that they describe.
Can be summed up in this phrase to consider others
More important than yourself.

Romans 13:8-10 “Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. For this, “YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.”

That is the epitome of godliness, and that is the epitome of righteousness
And that is what God expects that you and I demonstrate.

AND WHAT A BLESSING THIS IS

God is willing to give righteousness to a thug sinner like me,
And the only thing He wants in return is for me to put it to use.

That is like someone giving a glass of water to a thirsty man,
Only if the thirsty man promises to drink it.

Or like giving a steak to a starving man,
Only if the starving man promises to eat it.

God will gladly give us righteousness if we ask,
He only desires that we put it to use.
And that is good news for all of us.

And let me say to you this morning.
If you have been condemned by the Sermon on the Mount…
If you have seen your sin and desired to be made new…

Then the solution is easy.
Ask God and He will give you righteousness.

David actually showed us a prayer to pray.
Psalms 25:8-11 “Good and upright is the LORD; Therefore He instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in justice, And He teaches the humble His way. All the paths of the LORD are lovingkindness and truth To those who keep His covenant and His testimonies. For Your name’s sake, O LORD, Pardon my iniquity, for it is great.”

Isn’t that the heart of it?
God is good.
God gives righteousness
Pardon me please

That is exactly what Jesus wants you to know as well.

In and of yourself, you are not pleasing to God
Because you are not righteous.

But the great God that we serve will gladly give you righteousness
If you will ask Him for it.

And all He asks is that you put it to use.

And this morning that is what I encourage you to do this.
Ask God
Seek God
Knock on God’s door

And let God give what you cannot receive anywhere else.

Let Him give you His perfect righteousness
Made possible through the death of His Son.

1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
